From the VFL. Is he a chance to do an Egan and be listed as a late pick. Played a great season in the VFL, great final last week, has only just turned 21 (2 days). He is 192cm and weighs 88kg so is a key defender. Article on him on GFC website saying senior coaches were impressed by him. With our key defender delistings this year (playfair, hunt, spencer, lonergan) is he a chance as some key back depth?

I would have thought so. Has been impressive. Hard to find places on senior lists these days but if he was young enough which I assume he is worth rookie status at least from what I have seen. We need that sort of player also in the future as you mention.

Gee he reminded me of Scarlo the way he spoilt and ran off his opponent last week. I know it was only one game but he was pretty impressive.

Playfair end Spencer can go but I'd be a little disappointed if Hunt and Lonergan were to be delisted (I think Byrnes and Gardiner should go before them) but I suppose someone has to make way.

Byrnes cannot be delisted, has another year to go on his contract.

Can't see the club delisting Lonergan either, unless he doesn't want to continue playing with us (which I highly doubt).

:)Sorry Geelong supporters but Thommo isnt goin anywhere hes stayin with us:thumbsu:

I wish we could take him with a late pick/ rookie selection.

Scotty T would be one of the favs to get a spot on our list for next year. Love the way he plays!

I remember seeing his name on the teamsheet a few times last season, and he did catch my eye earlier this year (albeit, for the wrong reason - he was, at least in that game, far too concerned about his direct opponent and grappling/pushing off him [consistently unsuccessfully, mind you] that his mind was on anything but the game itself). Essentially, he shitted me with his game back then.

I've only seen him twice more since then (last Sunday included), but he has presented himself alot better, in my eyes at least. I'm still not sure on alot of things he does, but you do have to appreciate the game he played (well, most of it) last Sunday. Read the play nicely, rebounded with purpose, and displayed some nice one-on-one defensive efforts. The hard-arse attitude won't hurt him either.

Depending on how he performs in the coming weeks, I wouldn't mind seeing him as a rookie-listed player next season.

I've never seen him play. From all reports I've heard, he's a promising defender and quite a few AFL clubs are considering drafting him in the upcoming PSD but Geelong has been reluctant to release footage of him. What's he like? What are our chances of picking him up from our VFL team? If anyone has links to photos or videos of him please post. Thanks.

BDP raise's a single finger to his lips and says SSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHH !!! remember the LID lets use it again. :thumbsu:

I'm not convinced of his prospects as a genuine KPP (he shapes more like a Milburn/Mackie tall flanker to be honest), but he's a no-frills defender who gets the job done.

Reads the play well, has some overhead skills, and shows some ability in one-on-one contests - won more than his share of man-on-man contests in the VFL with a timely spoil, better body-use, and/or better reading of the ball in mid-flight. Some grunt factor, which I like - a natural makeup of the no-fuss approach of his. Disposal is pretty average at times, in my opinion, so something to work on there.

Stood up when it counted most, in the finals; marked everything in sight. Could do alot worse with a late pick for depth purposes.

He's a certainty to be picked up!

Realistically a KP Defender is the last thing the Cats needs, with Scarlett still having 3-4 good years left, Egan a great CHB in the making, Mackie stepping up his role in the side. Mind you he could be a decent replacement for Milburn in a couple of years.

I'll tell you what Geelong needs:
Very Little;)

Just wondering what he's got going for him that Sam Hunt didn't?

That's the thing, any young defender who comes in probably isn't going to get games for 2,3,4 years. Scarlett is like a Duracell battery, he never goes down unless it's something very serious, Egan will be a permanent fixture at CHB for 10 years. Then there's Harley, Mackie, Milburn, Hunt. Good luck finding a spot :o

Similar players. BUT...

Sam Hunt = 7 years in the system and never been able to make it. Reached his potential.

Scott Thompson = Better overhead grab, better contested ball winner, and zero years in the system. Massive amounts of improvement and still plenty of years.

Think the club cut Sam because they had seen what he had to offer and it was time to cut the losses and try and develop another defender instead.

Defense, defense, defense. And a football brain.

Additionally, I'd imagine the fact that Thompson has the 'upside' factor over Hunt bears some weight to the argument. Hunt's an honest defender at VFL level; he's been toiling there for years and hasn't done anything to suggest he can perform at the next level up (let's face it, as good as his finals series in '06 was, the primary catalyst for his upgrade to the senior list was insurance for Lonergan - were it any other year there would have been substantial doubt over his upgrade).

Thompson is the flavour of the month (or rather, the months gone by), and arguably deservedly so. He put on BOG-esque performances when given the chance, on the biggest stage/s that are the finals/GF, and because of his age/inexperience, has the tag of "potential" attatched to him. He's looking good for a VFL player, can he take the next step up? Those are the questions being asked. Given the fact that he's an untried talent at AFL level (or on an AFL list), that upside/potential factor is attractive. Sadly, the same cannot be said of Hunt.

... if Eddie and Mick leave him alone like they rejected Stevie last year ;).

We need to plan for the future so that we are always one step ahead of Collingwood :D.

Sounds as though he would be a handy pickup but I'm worried other clubs may make a move for him before us.

Our three oldest players are Milburn, Harley and Scarlett at 30, 29 and 28 respectively. Harley missed a signfigiant number of games this season through injury, as did Egan - and we didn't have anyone to replace them. At the moment Geelong's needs are young backs, rucks and forwards - in that order (the next two on the age list are Ottens and Mooney).
