Brett had a back injury which could be managed, probably, but there was no long term positive prognosis.
Therefore his situation was different to Torney's, who AFAIK is injury free.

Unlucky is not good enough when we are talking about players livelihood here. We are cutting players careers short because we were amateurish with our list management. So really the players are paying now for club's mistakes a few years back. Its not Jason's fault that we weren't managing the list properly and as such he shouldn't be the one to pay for it. All he did was do what was asked from him and thats to play at a high level week in week out and that wasn't good enough.
Just ask yourself this question, if I was a good player (in the same ball park as Torney, Welsh and Hudson) approaching 30 at the AFC and got offered a better long term deal by another club, would I take Adelaide's offer of 1 year deal knowing what happened to players like me in the last couple of years, or would I go for the better deal to get as much as I possibly can out of my football career and secure my family financially?!
I know which option I would take and if you are true to yourself, you would do exactly the same!

Depends if you subscribe to the football is business theory. I think there is still some loyalty factor in the game. I think the Club showed Scott loyalty by giving him a cotnrat this year and perhaps he should repay the faith by sticking with us next year. This is not to say he shouldn't push for a better deal for himself but he must realise that the AFC would only offer him a performacne based contract on past performacne.
We obviously don't know the true ints and outs of it but I would hope he isnot asking for too much.
If he leaves, so be it. I hope he goes well in Melbourne except against us.

I agree with you Stiff from the player's perspective, go and get the best contract you can, just like we do in our work environment.
But I competely disagree with your amateurish comment. The club is completely being professional in it's list management, amateurish would be to allow emotions to affect your contract handouts. Ask yourself this from AFC's point of view, does Torney deserve another contract based on his service given or what service he can offer in the future years? AFC have obviously weighed up a younger player can do his job in the next coupla season's, so for list management he has to go. Yes it's cold and ruthless, but purely professional, not amatuerish.

Excellent point - i seriously doubt adelaide will retain welsh beyond next season. It is clearly in his interest.
This will probably all be repeated next year with Doughty, bassett or even burton.

I honestly don’t know.
The easy answer is to take the 2 year deal from the Victorian club and live in the moment by earning an extra $150,000 a year. But how will that decision affect his reputation and earning capacity after his football days are over.
The Adelaide Football Club has a fairly strong network of influential people in this town and if Scott Welsh takes this offer his life after football may be a lot harder. Is moving clubs worth risking this by losing potential job offers?
Would the AFC be interested in finding him any sort of meaningful employment after he has walked out on them? I doubt it. The new club wouldn’t show him the same sort of loyalty and look after him after his time has expired.
Sponsors and members have long memories and certainly help those who stay loyal. I know this for a fact as I see it everyday as my boss used to play for an Adelaide based national league side and he has no trouble picking up sponsorship deals for his product.
So being true to myself – if I played 100 odd games and kicked 250 odd goals for a club like Adelaide, weighing everything up it would be a pretty hard decision to make. I would probably lean towards staying in Adelaide. However if I was in Ben Hudson shoes who was only around the club for literally 5 mins I would take the 3 year deal with the Western Bulldogs every time.

Whatever happens one thing is certain, we will have a younger and hopefully fitter squad for next year. It's obvious our squad from the last three years weren't going to be able to take us to a prmiership. To NCs credit he got them close but No cigar. You can't have it both ways, you either keep going with the same mob like Gary Ayres did or you make changes.

No, his manager is trying to get him a better deal. Crows are probably only offering a one year performance based deal and rumor is a Melbourne club is offering a two year deal.

Being the Club's top goal scorer this year would certainly put him in a stronger position and perhaps the Club is offering more money but won't extend the 1 + 1 scenario because they know his past history.

Probably rates more attention this year for a couple of reasons:
1. The players that have already left the club or been delisted.
2. He only played 6 games in 06 compared to the 21 games he played this year. Probably seen as more valuable by some.

agree. been saying this for weeks, slavish devotion to policy is just crazy. in a restricted labour market, a one-size-fits-all approach makes no sense.
when did treating every situation on its merits go so out of fashion?
we've been one of the best run clubs for quite some time, and we've done it by being very conservative and methodical in turbulent times - keeping our heads whilst waiting for others to lose theirs. very appropriate in the circumstances, but what if the environment changes? now, some of the more hopeless clubs are getting their house in order - perhaps we'll be exposed for a lack of flexibility and innovation?

That's why people change jobs all the time, and there's nothing wrong with a player leaving if the club has a different opinion of their worth.
That being said - if we're talking about Torney's livelihood and career, the club DID offer him a job only days after he was cut from their list. His livelihood wasn't affected very much.

Found out last night the club after Scotty Welsh is not Melbourne, infact it is WESTERN BULLDOGS. Melbourne supposedly are not in the mix at all which makes sense seeing the have R. Robertson who plays a similar role. Ive been told its definately the Bulldogs chasing him!!!

I wont be too bothered if he leaves - it'll force us to use the youngsters, and while Welshy has probably proved me wrong and had a very good year, injuries and inconsistency are still a concern.
What does piss me off is these Melbourne Clubs making contact with our players before and after the trade period and trying to basically steal them; something needs to be done about it.
And CrowMo and Stiffy are right - if I was a 30 year old 'very good' player (but not tier 1) at the Crows, I'd be seriously concerned about my future, and would more than likely float my name in the market to see what my options are.
This stupid policy we have which doesn't acknowledge form and performance, but purely age, will come back to bite us on the arse.
