News

The Adelaide Football Cub has signed its second New South Wales Scholarship player, 15-year-old Sam Martyn.

Sam, parents Doug and Jacqui and three siblings live at Merimbula on the south coast of New South Wales, about 40 minutes from the Victorian border.

Crows recruiting manager Matthew Rendell said: “Sam is an ideal candidate for the scholarship scheme. He grew up playing soccer and more recently athletics and has only played football for one year.”

Sam is rated second in Australia for his age group in the 800m and 1500m. He recently competed in the national championships in Sydney for the U16s and finished runner-up in the 800m in 1.56.38 and runner-up in the 1500m, running 3.59.84.

Sam recently underwent physical testing through the scholarship program where he ran 9.19 for the 3km time trial (easily better than anyone has run at any U18 draft camp) and a 15+ beep test which is also in the top echelon.

“Sam loves his football and realises he has a lot of work to do but he has some talents to get him a long way – a strong work ethic, desire and can-do attitude,” Rendell said. “Adelaide Football Club will support his desire to continue to compete and train in athletics as we see that as beneficial to his football.”

Adelaide Football Club’s first scholarship signing, Broken Hill’s Taylor Walker, was added to the Crows primary list in November.

Re: New Scholarship player

Another player that is a new convert to football. It seems the club is focussing on the athletic side of the game and as long as they have played some form of competitive sport involving a ball, then we believe we can transform them an aussie rules footballer. Interesting.

Those times sound very promising though.

I cant believe you guys even managed to post the same topic in the exact same minute. :p

soul mates....?

Great news for the club, his endurance sounds staggering. Warren Tredders was an oustanding little athelete over the same distances initially, then became a good footballer. Who knows.

Mods - can we please create a new thread for Sam Martyn in The Locker Room. He may not be on our senior or rookie lists yet, but there are bound to be multiple threads created about him in the coming years.

Good idea Vader, I will create one.

He kicked 31 in 11 games so he sounds like he knows how to kick a goal.

BOG in 5 of those games.

However it's only under 15's lol.

But atleast he shows promise.

Big fish, small pond. At this age (and especially in country leagues) athletic ability counts for a lot - and he's a great athlete, no doubt about that. Remains to be seen how he goes against better players.

But it's very encouraging to see this in a 15yo kid.

sounds like he has all the attributes that Neil Craig would want. Neil loves these type of players who are athletes converted into footballers.

cant wait to read some articles about him over the next few years..ala walker.

so who is the other one?

I am assuming that Taylor Walker is considered a NSW scholarship player anymore?

Talyor was the first nsw scholarship player, so yes it is technically correct to name Sam as the 2nd scholarship player ;)

ADELAIDE has signed one of Australia’s brightest young middle-distance runners on a scholarship.

Sam Martyn, 15, is rated second nationally for his age group over 800m and 1500m. In last year’s national under-16 championships in Sydney he finished runner-up both in the 800m in 1:56:38 and in the 1500m in 3:59:84.

During physical testing for the Crows’ New South Wales Scholarship program, he ran 9.19 for the 3km time trial (easily better than anyone has run at any under-18 draft camp) and a 15+ beep test – also considered outstanding.

Martyn, from Merimbula on the south coast of New South Wales, is the Crows’ second New South Wales Scholarship player, after Broken Hill’s Taylor Walker, who was added to the Crows primary list in November.

Crows recruiting manager Matthew Rendell said the club would continue to encourage Martyn’s athletic training.

“Sam is an ideal candidate for the scholarship scheme,” Rendell said.

“He grew up playing soccer and more recently athletics and has only played football for one year.

“Sam loves his football and realises he has a lot of work to do but he has some talents to get him a long way – a strong work ethic, desire and can-do attitude.

“Adelaide Football Club will support his desire to continue to compete and train in athletics as we see that as beneficial to his football.”

He also played a few under 17s games as well and was in the best players 5 times there as well including being named best player on 3 occasions.

Looking at those game reports, seems like they don't have much of a team. U17s lost to Tathra 27 goals to 1 - though Martyn did kick the solitary goal (and was voted Diggers' best player). Still, he was good enough to win the league's B&F for the U15s.

just on a random note, has anyone seen Bocks little brother, Christian.

HE IS A MONSTER. Will be drafter for sure, he is around 204cm.

The more I read about the kid the more I like.

He won the league B&F in the U15s. Not bad for a kid playing in one of the weaker teams, in his first season playing the game (if the AFC press release is to be believed), having only played 2/3 of the season in the U15s before being promoted to the U17s.

Still want to see how he does against better opposition (the kind he has to compete with if he wants to be drafted), but so far so good.
