Second NSW Scholarship Player

I think it is 2. However I thought that was not 2 per year, but 2 at a time. So getting someone for the sake of it could mean we may miss out on a younger, but better player? It would be harsh (and maybe not permitted) to cancel a scholarship for someone better.

I thought Collingwood had three. Dunno, maybe VicCrow knows.

I agree though that we should concentrate on quality not quantity.

And they have all won brownlows already ;)

To be fair, 2007 was the first year in which any of them became eligible to be drafted.

Of that crop, 2 were promoted to the senior lists (Walker & Bird), with 3 more being promoted to various rookie lists.

Only one non-scholarship player was drafted (national draft at least) from NSW this year - Armstrong, drafted by the Crows.

NSW is by far the weakest state in terms of number of kids being drafted. The scholarship seems to be doing a good job of attracting & retaining the kids who are likely to be drafted. Sure, none of them have been wildly successful - just give them time.

Armstrong also wasn't eligible for a Scholarship because he was boarding in Melbourne and going to school down here. IIRC he was at Assumption College.

Dean Terlich and Matthew Beckmans both went to Sydney in the Rookie Draft. Not sure if there were any others, but those two also weren't eligible for a Scholarship because even though they live in NSW there are parts of the state (south) that isn't included in the scheme. They both played TAC Cup though as some of the southern parts of NSW are in Murray Bushrangers region.

I know there is a limit 2 per year but isn't there also a limit of how many you can have overall?!
I think it's six. It could be four, but I'm pretty sure it's two per year over a three year period.

As I recall, I remember thinking that it was a pretty dumb maximum to have because if you can only sign two per year and the scholarships last three years then the most you can have on the go is six.

Re: New Scholarship player

Most of your questions on the scholarship program should be answered on this page of the AFL NSW/ACT website's Scholarship page by going to the relvant link. At the bottom of the page there are a couple of pdf files re the brochures on the scheme.

They put up a story on Sam up yesterday.

The Adelaide Football Cub has signed its second New South Wales Scholarship player, 15-year-old Sam Martyn.

Sam, parents Doug and Jacqui and three siblings live at Merimbula on the south coast of New South Wales, about 40 minutes from the Victorian border.

They have obviously changed the rules re the recruiting zone. If you download this brochure and go to page 6 you will see that Merimbula was well inside the 2006 no recruiting zone.

Just taking the piss mate, if you read some of the stuff on the Collingwood board;)

Edit: And I agree with your point mate, the scholarship scheme is an excellent initiative
