Why did Mitch and Maxi open when Mitch Owen is sitting right there?

Marsh said they are trying to set Owens into a set role so I sort of get it. You have to think if Maxwell gets to the WC it's only going to be just so having some sort of backup to that middle hitter is a good idea.

If I heard correctly in comms they were saying it was to counteract the spin that the Windies would bowl in the powerplay.

sort of, also to allow Owens to settle in a role. I get it.

Well I do agree with the Caribbean Cricket Podcast:

Forde didn't look too bad from what I have seen of him. No idea who this Blades lad is though.

Owen isn't making a full strength team as an opener. He has a real shot at making it as a replacement for Stoinis' role though so they're giving him that chance.
Who are our openers in a full strength team? Feel like it's been chopping and changing the past few years and they are predominantly not openers elsewhere. Would rather try Owen in his preferred role and move Mitch back to 3.

Head and Short I'd guess, but would at least like to see Owen given a crack this series

Agreed it's head and short going forward .....I can see what they are doing with Owen...replacement in the middle order for maxi in the future ..keep pumping games into Owen in the middle order

looking at the World Cup top seven looks like

marsh
head/short
inglis
green
david
maxi/Owen
Owen maxi

heaps of power ....head the only leftie

Expecting the next few games David to go up the order

bit worried about maxi ....he looks worried against pace

Nope Mitch has to stay as opener for me ....killed it in the IPL as the opener...is such a weapon against pace at the top and harder ball against the spin if they open with it

dont mind Owen as an opener but if he can nail down a middle order finisher role would be so much better for the team

inglis at three against the spin all round player....greenie the batsmen at 4.... maxi David Owen 5-7 providing power against spin and pace...maxi better against spin..David better against pace

looks good so far

and with the likes of marsh, green, owen able to bowl and perhaps even head and short - they won't need more than 2 specialist quicks.
Yep its going to be hard to squeeze: Hoff, Cummins, Starc, Ellis, Spencer Johnson, Dwarshuis and Abbott into 2 spots. The latter 3 probably were behind the first 4 mentioned. Think the time may have passed Behrendorff and Jhye Richardsons have counted against him, despite his relatively youngish age.

Nathan Ellis bowled extremely well in the first 2 games and I'll say it again, I dont think the West Indies power hitters can pick his off-pace, pace-off deliveries.

What counts against Ellis, is he doesn't regularly play every game of the IPL and isn't playing as much internationally as the first three.

You'd rather be an Australian selector with those selection dilemnas right now than a West Indian selector for sure.

Also I always though Cam Green was talented but scoring runs as an opener , in which he has a brief stint nationally is a totally different kettle of fish to scoring runs batting at 4. Both Cam Green and Inglis have pushed their case strongly for those middle order spots.

And I think you will get brownie points from the selectors if you have been playing in the IPL in the last season or two. By playing , I mean playing on a consistent or regular basis.

who will be the back up keeper come world cup time - surely not JFM ?
carey would be a better option - if not - pick no one and run with it.

we've had the luxury of the last 3 world cups of wade as wk and inglis in the squad.
