Select an All Australian side of the past 50 years, from 1975 until 2025.

Players can be nominated from the VFL/AFL, SANFL and WAFL competitions over the past 50 years.

The criteria is as follows:

-Must have won any of the following awards: Brownlow Medal; Magarey Medal (best and fairest in the SANFL); Sandover Medal (best and fairest in the WAFL); Norm Smith Medal; Jack Oatey Medal (best afield in the SANFL Grand Final); Simpson Medal (best afield in the WAFL Grand Final);

-Must have played in at least 1 premiership;

-Must have played interstate/State of Origin football;

-Must have been named All Australian

The framework for selection is as follows:

-Starting 18;

-Four interchange;

-2 subs;

-4 emergencies;

-1 coach (must have coached 1 or more premiership teams in the VFL, SANFL, WAFL)

-Must have won any of the following awards: Brownlow Medal; Magarey Medal (best and fairest in the SANFL); Sandover Medal (best and fairest in the WAFL); Norm Smith Medal; Jack Oatey Medal (best afield in the SANFL Grand Final); Simpson Medal (best afield in the WAFL Grand Final);
Leigh Matthews and Wayne Carey ineligible, but Shane Woewodin and Brad Hardie are...

OP is asking for 28 players (18 starters, 4 interchange, 2 subs, 4 emergencies) who met all four separate criteria. Tough ask.

Example: Lockett, Dunstall and Buddy do not qualify.

And Gary Ablett Snr ineligible but Jason Castagne eligible. Joke thread
Nice starting point for the ineligibles, with Ablett Snr, Carey and Lethal in the forward line...

Edit: Just realised we get Dunstall and Buddy as well!

May be too top heavy - which of the four talls will I start on the bench?

Better criteria:

-All players: selected as AA before (duh).
-Defenders: BnF winner.
-Midfielders: must have won at least one of Brownlow, Coaches Association and League MVP awards.
-Forwards: must have been club's leading goal kicker at least one season.

It would remove most restrictions while still having sensible selection criteria.

And then there were specialist wingers who really need their own category, as they weren't considered ''mids''.

True.

Although I did reason that players such as prime Judd and Goodes could actually dominate the wings with their skill sets. You could replace them with Isaac Smith and Andrew Embley, but would it upgrade the team? It's tricky to answer.

Of course no real team would have the luxury of Judd on a wing. I'm pretty sure Goodes played there at times.

Dating back to 1975 I was more meaning Schimmelbusch, Turner, Hawkins, Flower, etc.

You never saw Micky Turner ? Great player. You've never had a better wingman since.
70s through mid 80s is a bit before my time. Sure as a footy tragic I've scoured what footage there is (especially finals and Geelong matches) but there is no way I could personally commentate on Turners career like I could for what I'd call "modern era wingmen" (AFL era). Matera might be the best of the ones I saw a lot of.

Flower > Matera > Hawkins > Turner

The best 4 I've seen.

Greig before my time.
