I actually agree with dirk. (of course i do, I'm a carlton supporter ). Think it's very similar to the Geelong-Skilled Stadium situation. In all of those 26 straight wins they had failed to play a quality side, yet they came up against a haf decent side at the time in Sydney and failed to uphold their 'stunning' record.

Let's look at Dirk's post in more detail:
Round 1: v North Melbourne - finished 9th
Round 3: v Sydney - finished 7thLOSS
Round 6: v Melbourne - finished 13th
Round 8 & 18: v Fremantle - finished 11th
Round 9: v Bulldogs - finished 10th
Round 11: v Gold Coast - finished 17th
Round 13: v Port Adelaide - finished 16th
Round 16: v Geelong - finished 2nd
Round 20: v Richmond - finished 12th
Round 22: v Essendon - finished 8th
Round 24: v Adelaide - finished 14th

Of all the teams you played at Patersons this year, only three were top-8 sides: Geelong, Sydney and Essendon, each finishing 2nd, 7th and 8th respectively.

Now I personally don't think you can take anything away from that Geelong win, as it was a great one, but the other win against the 8th side in the comp , as Dirk suggested to, isn't as impressive as it looks on paper.

Is there an advantage having teams fly a 3-hours flight over to Perth to play in front of a hostile crowd? Of course it is. However I really don't think the advantage is as big as it is perceived to be. The real battle is fought mentally and emotionally, IMO.
Out of all the games West Coast have played, I don't care about any expect the game they played last week... that game alone shows just what a good side they are...

Saturday night will tell all. Should be a cracking contest. I reckon it could be similar to that home & away game back in 95 when the Blues and Eagles fought it out in a nail biter at Subi.

It's been said a hundred times before, but the more space that Carlton have, the more they like it and Subi has 10% more overall space than Etihad.
Of course that alone does not guarantee a win, but it does serve our running game moreso than the tighter spaces do.

Having space to run into is one thing.

Using your pace to run into that space at full speed offensively and defensively for 4 quarters is an entirely different matter.

I dont think you will use the space to its full advantage.

And not being harsh on Ratts... but I loled when I heard what he said in the press conference. There is no way any of the players will carry a "finals burden" into next year if we go out in straight sets.

+1
I was at that game. Sitting in the old WAFL members stand.

We had some great games at Subiaco Oval in the 90's. Those were the days when you could get a middy of Swan Draught and buy a decent hamburger. And there were no bloody add's over the PA at 190 decibells.

No matter who is in or who is out this week, both teams will be pumped for a huge game. I am looking forward to losing my voice again at Subiaco Oval. See you on Saturday.

GO BLUES!

There is more Carlton supporters posting in this thread than WCE supporters!

I think its going to be a great game either way. Please, Woosha, make somebody accountable for Yarran off half back. Cant have another Davis/Shaw/Obrien scenario...

Other than a win by a kick over an out of sorts Geelong (who managed to lose to the Dons the week prior), have you actually played anyone of consequence at home since round 3?

It's a great record to be sure. And we may yet prove inconsequential. I'm just not sure its as impressive as it looks on paper.

Haha, i remember in the week leading up to the Geelong game everyone said we were no chance, Geelong would come out fired up after their loss, no chance they would lose two in a row, champion team etc. etc.

We smashed them early and they got back in to it, we can only beat who we get put in front of us and this year it was 11/12.

You're an absolute legend.

I'd already seen AFL Teams and Marngrook, but I don't watch the footy show any more. I think the fact that they managed to devote 1 minute 56 seconds to one of two games on during the weekend sort of vindicates that decision.

Yup. Totally agree. 2 Semi finals are on and that's all the time they give it??

Why would you give any time to semi finals when you have Shane Warne telling us about facelifts or watching blokes try and kick a footy over a giant draught balloon or sam playing as a goal keeper?

I was thinking the exact same thing. Football finals are being played this weekend but they want to spend more time talking about Shane Warne's relationship with Liz Hurley and what he has/hasn't done to his face.
I never watch it as I get plenty of football analysis on the Fox shows but I decided, against my better judgement, to tune in because my team is playing in a semi and I was dumb enough to think they may actually discuss it in depth.
Less than 2 minutes devoted to one of 2 games being played this weekend.
That piece of shit show should really change it's name. Footy is the last thing they seem to want to discuss on there.

I hated you guys with a passion in 05 and 06 (especially Hunter and Cousins) but I'll be cheering you on tomorrow against the tanking cheats! (interstate teams have to stick together)

Respect what you've done after being in the wilderness the last few years, hopefully we'll renew the rivalry sooner rather then later (we are the only team to have beat you at home this year:D).

Ha Ha Ha, every time I do that I am bitterly disappointed to the point where I do decide, against my better judgement, to watch, I simply don't watch.

The Marngrook Footy Show > The Footy Show

By a gazillion times. Gilbert is one person, oh and shibz, that has almost swayed me to like St Kilda again. I said almost. :p

Ratts was asked if the pressure was on Eagles and he answered it correctly. No team that finished in the top 4 would want to go out in straight sets. Ratts didn't bring up the topic, he was asked, and from someone who had just coached a game where the pressure was suffocating, he answered it truthfully...

Previous stats don't mean too much if the people playing weren't playing at the time, however Carlton losing in the elim finals the last two years did affect the players against Essendon. And same way it will affect the Eagles if they do go out in straight sets this year.

One thing they didnt show on the show was that he said MAYBE as well.
