First up: the dreaded match thread activity by round graph. Every season it crashes like this as the season progresses, and every season the admin is blamed for plummeting interest in the league. So instead - let's compare it to last season in the next graph.

    1622555692046.png
So the speed of match thread activity decline is barely different to Season 30, which was the most active the Sweet FA match threads have ever been. Whatever happens in Round 15 should be looked at though - for it spiked in both seasons. The cause of the spike this season seemed to be the Dragons vs. Roys match thread, which was a hive of activity due to Mobbs selling off some land: a quarter of the Round 15 posts came from that thread. Round 8 also saw a jump in activity, which this time appeared to be a result of the Roys vs. Warriors match thread.

    1622555710041.png
This total match thread post x season graph is usually the one thing that gets isolated in this analysis, and no doubt NaturalDisaster will cop some grief that he is the cause of the decline from the highs of Seasons 29 and 30. But in a world of pandemics and lockdowns I think we should acknowledge that we're still miles ahead of the doldrums of Season 27 and 28, and revel in how vibrant the match threads are right now.

In hindsight I probably should switch this to a posts per round graph to take into account the 16 / 17 round seasons - but that'll have to wait till next season. For the record, seasons 26, 29 and 31 were 17 rounds, whilst the other three in this graph were 16 rounds.

    1622555722277.png
Now we're looking at the number of posters who rock up each week across the last few seasons. Once again, the peak was Season 30 - but this season we're still the second best on record.

    1622555729942.png
But I think this graph here is the true representation of the evolution of league match thread health. The number of active match thread posters per week...with an active poster constituting someone who averages over five posts a week across the season. Season 31 had 161 active posters over the 17 rounds, which is only a slight drop from last season's 169, and quite comfortably the second best on record.

Hello and welcome all to the end of season summary of the match thread activity for each of the Sweet FA teams for this season.
The usual caveat applies here, where it's stated that this data is purely a measure of quantity...not quality. These numbers are however a good indicator of the health of the league, and may give us an indication of which clubs are in greater need of new posters going forward for the good of the league.
As a reference, here are the previous articles authored by WaynesWorld19, Ant Bear and myself:
I'll start off with some comparative data between the teams, and some trends over the seasons. Then over the next few days I'll do a club-by-club analysis. Now let's dive straight into it.

    1622535014843.png

So straight away we see that the Bombers are a mile ahead of the other teams for match thread posts; with 13,395 posts they generated about 36% more posts than the next most prolific teams. In second and third there are the Warriors and Roys just shy of 10,000, and then there is another step down to the rest. The Dragons and Demons are neck and neck in 4th/5th, the Gumbies and Furies not far behind in 6th/7th, the Bears and Hawks a little way back in 8th/9th, another drop back to the Swamprats in 10th, before the Wonders and Royals bring up the rear.

    1622535301288.png
What is generally considered a better indicator of the health of the league is the number of posters who are active in match threads each week - that is, making at least one post in their team's match thread. What is interesting here is that of the five most prolific teams, four of them average the most active posters per week (Roys, Warriors, Demons and Dragons), but the team with the MOST posts (the Bombers) drops a long way back to 8th with only 14.06 posters per week. Conversely, the Royals had by far the least posts in match threads this season, but they still had a respectable 13.82 active posters per week (9th). None of these numbers are alarming to the point of clubs being at risk of folding, but the Bears would be nervous with their 12.59 posters per week being significantly lower than any of the other teams.

As for the total number of posters to make an appearance this season, all clubs had at least 20 players post in a match thread this season. The Roys (25), Warriors (24) and Demons (23) lined up nicely with their posting activity, but what was surprising was that the Wonders had an equal league high 25 posters this season despite their low overall posting numbers.

    1622535370369.png

    1622535103780.png
The table on the left shows what the average percentage contribution each side has had in Season 31 match threads. This is with all neutral posts disregarded. A percentage of 50 would indicate even discussion between them and their opponents, whilst a higher number would suggest that the team likes the sound of their own voice or are prone to a bit of insular discussion. A range of 45-55% would probably be considered acceptable, so this would indicate that the Bombers and Roys love to chat amongst themselves, whilst the Wonders and Royals are struggling to keep up with the pace of the match threads.

Then we have the contentious "match thread wins" category that doesn't really mean too much and is a relic from earlier seasons. It does line up fairly well with the % of match thread table though. This season the Bombers "won" the most match threads, with the only "loss" being against the Furies in Round 11. Whilst the Wonders and Royals had a much harder time of it - curiously the Wonders had their "wins" at the start of the season before their posting dropped off the cliff, whilst the Royals had theirs at the end of the season when the prospect of finals reinvigorated their list.

The table of the right shows what percentage of a team's match thread posts come from their Top 5 posters (by quantity). The higher the number, the more reliant they are on their five best to keep their numbers up. Of course this is proportional to their output, so the Bombers being so high up their is quite staggering. The Gumbies are the most reliant on their top five posters, whilst the Demons have a much better spread of contribution across their list.

    1622535134065.png
These three green tables expand upon how well balanced a team's list is, and it is interesting to see the rankings change as the contribution criteria changes. A perfectly balanced list would see 20 posters each contributing 5% of their team's match thread posts, so I feel the middle table is the best one to work off - once you see a larger number of posters on the 10+% contributions there is an implied reliance on those posters. Case in point for this is the Demons, who have the most evenly balanced list: they have high numbers for 2+% and 5+% contribution, but the lowest for 10+. Meanwhile the Gumbies and Furies have the most posters with 10+% contribution, but the lowest with 2+% contribution.

    1622535177365.png
I feel that these tables in blue give one of the best indicators of team activity though, and the posting threshold that one would put greater importance on would vary from person to person. There have indeed been requests for 30+ and 50+ categories for this, but I think we'll stick with these three for now. Personally I feel that 10 posts per week indicates good engagement in a match thread, but I can see reasons for 20+ being the better one. The Warriors and Demons were top two in both these categories this season, whilst the Royals were by far the worst.

    1622535243807.png
Back in the day the "weeks with >300 posts" table was considered the pass mark for match thread activity for each team. In fact, there even used to be a "weeks with >100 posts" table! Thankfully the SFA has evolved into a much stronger entity (although the Royals did drop below 100 posts in Round 14 this season!), and the >600 post table is considered the benchmark - whilst the >900 post entries are frowned upon. Last season there were 19 occasions when teams posted more than 900 times in a thread, whilst this season it dropped down to 10. The Dragons, Bombers, Roys and Warriors never dipped below 300 match thread posts this season, whilst the Royals only achieved it twice. Interestingly the Dragons were in the 300-600 post range on all but one occasion this season.

    1622607816995.png

Season 31 was the first full season for the Baghdad Bombers with Antonio BlueVein at the helm. Season 31 had been a very successful season for them posting-wise, despite the loss of WaynesWorld19 (164 ppw in S30) midseason due to retirement - the question was whether ABV would be able to keep his list of vagabonds motivated. His off-season cuts saw the usual plethora of failed rookies turfed, but the two losses that would be most keenly felt were Mozzie19 (113 ppw in S30) and ArdentEagle (6.5 ppw in S30) to the Wonders. They had some big ins though, in the form of BLUEALLTHRU (124 ppw in S30), RobR (114 ppw in S30) and The Jesus (8.9 ppw in S30) to compliment the next batch of rookies.

At first glance things look really good for the Bombers: they had four players averaging over 100 posts per week for the season, and 11 averaging over 10 ppw. ABV's output increased from 103 to 117 ppw, Jabba73 (61.4 ppw) was a successful rookie, Bovo was a revelation after a quiet first two seasons (from 10.8 to 24.6 ppw). Kilroy's drop in activity from 161 ppw last season to a more moderate 53.5 ppw was probably for the best too.

But there were some concerns: the huge numbers generated by ABV, Pugsley (128 ppw), RobR (132 ppw) and BLUEALLTHRU (129 ppw) masked a reduction in the depth of players at Baghdad. The average number of posters per week dropped from 16.25 to 14.06, and the shadow of Banhammer made an impact on their output. Santoz (65.3 ppw) was permabanned after Round 8, whilst BLUEALLTHRU, MITS and miggs all had enforced holidays. Recruit The Jesus (5.6 ppw) was barely sighted after Round 8, TheCoach (from 44.4 to 0.5 ppw) only made one appearance prior to the finals, miggs (from 21.8 to 2.2 ppw) was not as engaged, KohPhi (from 22.4 to 5.2 ppw) had long absences from the league, and CALL ME SNAKE (from 12.8 to 3.9 ppw) wasn't seen for most of the season. The culmination of all this occurred in Round 12 when only nine Bombers appeared in their match thread - a season low for the entire league! The remainder of the rookies also failed to fire, although there were some promising signs from Here2tellyouwhy (5.1 ppw) over the last three rounds. Ultimately having 10 players on their list with less than 10 posts for the season is a bad look.

So by no means a disaster for ABV, but there are a few cracks that he'll be looking at filling in over the off-season. He can't expect his Top 5 posters (with 71.94% of the Bomber posts) to sustain those numbers if the Bombers want to continue being the big posting number side of the competition. A cleanout of the dead wood at the bottom of his list, a few less visits to Banhammer, and two or three recruits to replace the aging and increasingly jaded veterans of Baghdad are what should be his priority.

A big question after Season 30 was what was going to happen to the Warriors. They had a shocker on all fronts, with poor on-qield performances and a greatly reduced level of match thread engagement compared to Season 29. Was S30 a return to normal after the aberration of S29 - or could TheInjuryFactory revitalise the Wazzas and get them back on the wagon?
The very first thing TIF did was trade pantskyle (31.1 ppw in S30) to the Demons. Was this a wise move? Probably. After getting rid of some very dead wood (see the lower half of their S30 posting chart) and stealing Test Tickle (41.1 ppw in S30) from the Bears he got to work sliding into the PMs of several former players. toxic, Lord_Flashheart, Stronzo, Spanna_ and Volbeat all hark from the rookie classes of Seasons 18 and 19 and were seduced back to the Warriors in the off-season. The Half Back chose to join the Warriors in a shamefully obnoxious display at the end of last season, whilst plenty of people were pleased to see kdavva74 make a return to the league after a brief sabbatical. To top it off, the Warriors wrangled rookie DockerDen5215 from the Furies, and also secured a second rookie in Rad Roo.
As a result of this movement the Warrior match thread activity skyrocketed this season - even surpassing what was achieved in Season 29. An average of 17.18 match thread posters a week was the second highest in the league, as was their total posting output of 9,808 posts. Importantly unlike last season they weren't overly reliant on their Top 5 posters for content (63.08%, compared to a whopping 84.56% last season). They topped the league for the number of posters averaging over 10 match thread posts a week (15) and were one of only three clubs to click over 600 match thread posts in a week six or more times this season.
EKA Medal prospect DockerDen5215 was their most prolific poster with 108 ppw, and he was ably supported by their core from last season: Tonga Bob (from 90.5 to 90.8 ppw), NaturalDisaster (from 71.1 to 72.9 ppw), TheInjuryFactory (from 58.5 to 51.8 ppw) and zackah (from 15.4 to 15.8 ppw), along with the returning kdavva74 (from 22.5 to 40.4 ppw). Building on that were successful recruits Lord_Flashheart (29.2 ppw), The Half Back (26.8 ppw), Test Tickle (24.6 ppw), Volbeat (10.6 ppw) and toxic (7.2 ppw). This increased activity also saw improvements from a few established Warriors: RelaxMax (0.9 to 29.2 ppw), Dinsdale (10.4 to 21.6 ppw), Freofalcon (from 1.2 to 11.9 ppw) and TubbsFarquhar (3.0 to 11.2 ppw).
The only concerns for the Warriors would be a small number of players losing interest as the season progressed. kdavva74's, Test Tickle's and Lord_Flashheart's activity dropped off after Round 11, whilst touted future leader harry000 was mostly absent this season. Raveneyes was not seen after Round 6, and a few of the recruits failed to fire, such as Rad Roo (0.3 ppw), Stronzo (0.5 ppw) and Spanna_ (1.1 ppw)...but you can't win them all. There is not much to be done to this list in the off-season beyond re-engaging with a few of the players who dropped away.

OUT: Wise Guy Sam (delisted), Lion Around (delisted), Deaneus! (retired).

    1622618383683.png
Generally considered one of the more stable lists in the SFA, the Demons had a relatively quiet season in Season 30 as a lack of on-qield success led to less engagement from the snow bunnies. To attempt to fix this, Demons skipper manangatang recruited pantskyle (31.1 ppw in S30) from the Warriors. Was this a good idea? Probably. They also had rookie Heardy_101 join their ranks, as well as a returning Azarole in Round 8. Out the door went a couple of inactives and unfortunately Deaneus! retired mid-season.
There was a general improvement in activity across the board for the Demons this season, and although their posting numbers didn't skyrocket compared to Season 30 (7,244 up to 7,646), the average number of Demon posters per week increased from 15.38 to 17.06 (3rd highest in the league). They had a league-high 9 players contributing more than 5% of their posts and their Top 5 only contributed 51.65%, which was the best (read: lowest) in the league. Their 12 players with an average of over 20 posts per week was the real telling statistic though, as the Demon list continues to be the benchmark for depth.
Their three most prolific posters from Season 30 actually had significantly reduced output, which shows how much their previously mid-tier posters stepped up. Callums_Guns (from 95.0 to 63.5 ppw), cooney (from 69.6 to 44.1 ppw) and Tarkyn_24 (from 45.4 to 29.0 ppw) dropped, but there were big gains from the likes of Proper Gander (from 15.3 to 23.6 ppw), Headless (from 23.5 to 36.8 ppw) and sante (from 0.7 to 11.1 ppw), whilst pantskyle (33.6 ppw) and Azarole (24.9 ppw) ended up being great additions.
There's not a heap to worry about in this list. The likes of Proper Gander, Dero (8.9 ppw), Yakker (22.1 ppw) and moginie (22.1 ppw) had some quiet weeks, but it was rare that they didn't show up at all. They'll be on the hunt for a couple of rookies to keep it fresh and replace a bit of the accumulating dead wood, but I suspect it'll be business as usual in Season 32.

    1622623025369.png
After their incredibly prolific Season 30 with a fresh list, the Dragons were bound to settle into a more sustainable groove in Season 31 - and that they did. With the exit of skipper AceAndy (76.9 ppw) to obscurity and Hatchy1992 (16.4 ppw) to the Swamprats, new captain serial_thrilla looked to recruits Bonz (29.8 ppw in S30) and Chief to fill the void. They also managed to lure rookie BringBackTheAnchor to the club to compliment their large cohort of rookies from the last two seasons.
Despite the large drop off in posting numbers, the Dragons were still ranked 4th in the league for total posts (7,753) and average posters per week (16.0). They were also one of the few clubs that managed to see minimal drag in activity as the season progressed; in fact, other than during the Round 15 Mobbs Minecraft fire sale, the Dragons were posting between 300 and 600 posts all season. They were one of four teams to never drop below 300 posts, whilst only the Royals (zero) surpassed 600 fewer times than the Dragons. There were also good contributions across the list as they ranked second in the league for the number of posters averaging more than five posts per week (15).
Whilst the very consistent performance of Bonz was admirable (69.0 ppw) and small gains from the likes of Strigoi (from 71.4 to 78.2 ppw), MC Bad Genius (from 26.4 to 27.7 ppw despite a month-long hiatus) and a returning fumbler (from 0.0 to 10.0 ppw) complimented a solid entry from BringBackTheAnchor (12.4 ppw), generally the Dragons saw drops in activity. serial_thrilla (from 141 to 93.1 ppw), Matt_352 (from 96.4 to 19.3 ppw), T2B_ (from 93.5 to 41.1 ppw), A Swallow (from 56.1 to 35.9 ppw), Blaze Storm (from 39.8 to 6.6 ppw), Stoods (from 40.3 to 4.3 ppw), Bradesmaen (from 21.7 to 11.5 ppw) and Knifey Spoony (from 26.0 to 9.0 ppw) all reduced in output. Yet I feel that this was more to do with the Dragons reading their opponents better this season, as a average match thread percentage of 52.40% was probably a better fit than last season's 55.89%.
Concerningly there's a reliance on their Top 5 posters for output, with their share of 69.55% of their posts being the third highest in the league. And their 6 posters with more than 20 posts per week is on the lower half of the league, which suggests that although they have a long tail of posters each week, many of them are not massive contributors.
So a season of maturing from the Dragons, but I think a couple of established recruits plus some rookies will be needed to stop things getting stagnant. Veterans Pie 4 Life (9.1 ppw) and Ljp86 (10.0 ppw) keep going around, but some new blood is always good to keep them on their toes.

    1622645491204.png
Up next we have Agent93 and Chipmunk's Hawks. Another team that has put together a solid list over the past few seasons, they generally have very good contributions across the board. This season they started off without the retired Loonerty (50.2 ppw in S30), departed The Jesus (8.9 ppw in S30) and Snake_Baker (1.6 ppw in S30) - whilst they replaced them with the returning PhenomenalV1, Hate (19.9 ppw in S30) and rookies Zoops and andleanback.

It was a generally quieter season for the Hawks in Season 31, with poor early season results on the qooty field seeming to suck the life out of them until a late season surge saw them sneak into the finals. Overall posting output dropped from 8,993 (5th) to 6,576 (9th), whilst still managing to retain a healthy number of posters each week with an average of 15.47 (6th), slightly down from 16.56 (4th) last season. These numbers are remarkably similar to Season 29 though, so it is not terrible news by any stretch.

Pleasingly they're still getting an even spread of contributors, with 8 posters creating over 5% of their posts each week (only topped by the Demons and Warriors) - and their Top 5 doing a middling 63.87% of that - but only 9 players averaging over 10 posts a week (10th) is a cause for concern. They did go missing some weeks though, with only 48.33% of activity in their match threads, although the Roys dominating their Round 17 match thread may have been the primary cause of that.

PMBangers (from 98.0 to 73.3 ppw) was their lead poster once more, but without the youthful exuberance of a rookie poster. There were also declines in output from Chipmunk (from 84.6 to 45.6 ppw), eth-dog (from 75.6 to 44.0 ppw), TY24 (from 40.9 to 15.0 ppw), por_please_ya (from 38.1 to 33.9 ppw) and Golumless (from 36.8 to 9.2 ppw) - but recruits PhenomenalV1 (22.9 ppw), Hate (24.0 ppw) and Zoops (1.5 ppw) filled the Loonerty sized hole in their list. So the Hawks managed to cover their losses over the off-season, but they were limited by their core posters losing some enthusiasm. TY24 and Golumless went missing for large chunks of the season, which was unfortunate - and only 11 posters in that last round in a crucial fixture for finals qualification certainly would have hurt.

With Chipmunk more control of the club in Season 32, he'll be looking to reinvigorate his troops whilst bringing in some rookies to get the club flying high once more.

Last season The Filth Wizard's Royals were the darlings of the SFA, both on the qooty field and off it. This season they're chugging along very nicely near the top of the SFA ladder, but their posting has fallen off the figurative cliff. Last season they were top of the tree for average posters per week (19.00), but they have fallen down to ninth in that category (13.82) with more than five less posters per week. Their pure posting output has fallen from 7,562 (7th) to 3,230 (12th place by the length of the straight) and are only contributing 35.54% of their match threads this season.

So what went wrong? Out the door went Kennedy Parker (25.8 ppw in S30) and a couple of inactives with three posts between them. To replace them Filthy was able to secure a rookie (Gadzorks) and a returning player (Danger in Texas) and all was looking promising. But then nobody bothered to show up come Round 1.

Nearly every single poster had a reduction in output this season (except one). The Filth Wizard (from 58.4 to 49.4) tried his heart out, but it was the utmost of uphill battles. GreyCrow (from 36.9 to 23.1 ppw), CakeEater (from 40.7 to 20.4 ppw), Marlowe (from 37.6 to 18.4 ppw), spookism (from to 24.6 to 15.1 ppw) and MrPremiership (from 20.8 to 13.1 ppw) were there each week, but the enthusiasm from Season 30 just wasn't there now that the premiership drought had been broken. Blacky (from 32.0 to 3.5 ppw), grumbleguts (an increase from 4.2 to 13.1 ppw), Kapow!!! (from 26.9 to 0.0 ppw), brahj (from 22.1 to 2.1 ppw), Ulahoopski (from 19.3 to 8.2 ppw), Smartys Power (from 18.7 to 6.9 ppw), nahnah (from 29.8 to 5.8 ppw) and Paddles_ (from 12.9 to 0.0 ppw) all went missing for long periods of time or had limited buy-in to the campaign. If I was drawing arrows for activity I would have run out of red ink.

The Royals only posted more than 300 posts in a match thread two times all season, whereas they managed it 13 times in Season 30. And they now sit dead last for posters with >10 posts per week (7) and >20 posts pre week (3) in the league. If it's a consolation for Filthy though, there's still a very good core of posters in the squad, and there are worse teams in the league for the number of posters rocking up each week. The problem is that the squad is built on players who have done the journey many times before, and without the novelty of a maiden premiership there was just limited motivation to get involved. There are very few posters in the Royals from the last four rookie classes, and those that are have never really gotten invested.

So what to do? Squad refresh? Or can a handful of new recruits and rookies be enough to reinvigorate the passion of the Royal veterans? Either way something needs to be done.

The Gumbies cop a lot of grief in the Sweet FA for their match thread activity, but for the last three seasons they have been remarkably consistent. Their average number of match thread posters has ranged from 13.65 (S29) to 13.81 (S30), and they slotted right in between those with 13.76 this season. And yet they have been lauded as having a much improved list finally in Season 31. Their posting numbers are up slightly (from 6,270 to 7,365), but why the recognition finally now? One thinks they've been a good unit for a while now and nobody has cared to notice.

Barrybran lost his mate cats2rise (29.8 ppw) in the off-season, but some good recruiting nabbed him a couple of rookies in wherearemykeys and Grimesy87 and the returning EagleOz. This enabled Baz to clear out some of the dead wood and start the season on a positive note. If memory serves me correct Ned Ryerson was also due to be culled, but he reappeared in the nick of time - more on him in a moment.

The Gumbies are the most reliant team in the league on their Top 5 posters for output (73.55%), and they really are the heart and soul of the squad. Barrybran (from 68.5 to 77.7 ppw), omgfridge (from 32.3 to 73.6 ppw), Riviat (from 60.4 to 60.8 ppw), GWS Goose (from 54.4 to 54.4 ppw...nice) and Genghis Tron (from 52.2 to 36.2 ppw) are the ones that carry the conversation each week, but they got quite the pleasant surprise when Ned Ryerson reappeared (from 0.0 to 52.2 ppw) to share the load. He was universally applauded for his contributions...but then he disappeared in Round 8 and wasn't seen again. Very unfortunate. Beyond them they saw some good improvements from some of their less well known posters, with Brick Loosener (from 9.6 to 16.6 ppw) and rookies Grimesy87 (4.1 ppw) and wherearemykeys (3.8 ppw) all chipping in.

But there is still a fair number of players on their list with only sporadic posts throughout the season: veterans beez (from 25.0 to 11.0 ppw), Rodney Dangerfield (form 25.1 to 18.6 ppw) and StFly (from 15.2 to 11.6 ppw) were quieter, and Taylor (from 7.1 to 0.0 ppw) has seemingly checked out of the SFA. EagleOz (3.2 ppw) was looking promising until he left mid-season. Depth remains the Gumbies concern, even though they have a very strong top order. They have the lower number of posters with >2% of the team's contribution (10), the lowest with >5% of the team's contribution (8)...and yet the highest with >10% of the contribution (5). They also have the lowest number of players with >5 posts per week (10).

Ultimately their current output is fine (48.64% of posts in their match threads, and ranked 6th for total posts), but they need some support for their core. Luring in a handful of veterans looking for a new adventure plus hitting the lottery with a good rookie or two is what Barrybran will be looking for in the off season. Doing so should be easier than it has been in the past due to their newfound reputation.

    1622874565535.png
The Furies have always been a bit of an enigma team posting-wise, in that if they're interesting in their opponent they'll go all-out, but if they find them a bit dull or uninspiring they'll find something else to do for the week. Season 30 was a classic example of this with their erratic output, but strangely enough they were somewhat consistent in Season 31, with most of the big names turning up every week.
Tigerturbulance had to deal with the loss of The Half Back (38.3 ppw in Season 30) and Hate (19.9 ppw in Season 30), and with no established recruits available he went down the rookie path: nabbing Mrs haydo, Grrr (briefly), GREENESHOOTS, crazywildhorse (from Round 9) and for the briefest of moments before the season started... DockerDen5215. A couple of no-shows from Season 30 were punted out the door, and with an invigorated list things were looking promising at the Hippodrome.
But then DockerDen5215 fled before list lodgment, Grrr (0.0 ppw) did not fire a shot, and Mrs haydo (2.1 ppw) decided that she'd had enough by Round 5. That left two rookies to pick up the slack, and they most certainly did that: with crazywildhorse (22.0 ppw) getting into the swing of things by the end of the season, and EKA fancy GREENESHOOTS (56.9 ppw) proving a great success both in match threads and in the world of media.
Of their core posters, most maintained or exceeded their output from last season. Mister M (from 78.1 to 70.2 ppw), Ned_Flanders (from 24.4 to 58.4 ppw), TJASTA (from 54.8 to 57.7 ppw), Elton Johns Wig (from 24.9 to 46.4 ppw), Tigerturbulance (from 38.2 to 35.9 ppw), Rioli8217 (from 21.8 to 30.6 ppw) and Sterge (from 9.0 to 12.6 ppw) were ever present and flew the magenta flag all season.
There were a few worries though, as Lady Godava (from 40.5 to 8.4 ppw), JackBero (from 39.8 to 1.4 ppw) and most concerningly future captain Bastyy (from 80.2 to 18.6 ppw) were much quieter this season. The Furies operate with a full squad of 27, so the tail end can look particularly bad - but even so there were 14 players with less than 50 posts for the season, which is the second worst in the league behind the Bears. The fear of Banhammer visits limiting team selection seems to drive carrying this extra baggage.
So a slight drop off in activity for the season from 7,733 (6th) to 7,274 posts (7th) which was in line with the overall league decrease. More concerningly there was a reduction in the average posters per week (from 14.56 to 13.24), which now sees them the second worst team in the league for posters per week. In fact, after Round 5 the most Furies in a match thread was 14, with a very low 9 making an appearance in the last round. Poor qooty performances all season likely drove this, as it can be hard to motivate when coming dead last (props to TJASTA for making the most of it though).
Even so, the Furies have a dozen consistent performers on their list - it just drops off very suddenly after that. They are the worst club for number of posters with >2% of the team's contribution (10), but are ranked 5th in the league for players with >5% of the team's contribution (7). They still have the ability to go large though: and they were one of only five teams able to post more than 900 times in a match thread this season.
So quite the mixed bag for the Furies. They have a very strong core, but just couldn't motivate the plebs once their qooty season turned to shit. More rookies are probably in order for Season 32, but it seems they are planning a changing of the guard in the off-season, so the pressure will be on Bastyy to get that fire back in their stomachs.

The problem with having a single poster pumping out 25% of your posts each week, is that if they go on an extended holiday to a location with limited internet access...the team's posting numbers can plummet rather quickly.
The Bears had a few experienced players leave them in the off-season, with Test Tickle (49.1 ppw in Season 30) leaving to the Warriors, and xenxen (20.3 ppw in Season 30) and U2tigers (16.6 ppw in Season 30) departing the league, and a handful of inactives getting their marching orders. MWPP looked to rectify this by bringing Broken back to the league, and refreshing their list with five new rookies.
The five rookies...didn't turn out so great. Cuzz09 (1.3 ppw) was the best of them, whilst the other four combined for four total posts. Ouch. But thankfully Broken hit the ground running, and his 29.2 ppw was a highlight for most Bears match threads.
The Bears have had some trouble now with depth beyond their core posters, and this season was no different, as after their ten big names the best effort was from Art Vandelay_ (from 3.9 to 4.1 ppw)...and then not much else. The consistent cameos from kane249 and Jezmiester40 were welcomed, but they really need more from players like them. Because when Metalcrusher goes on holidays, guero (from 80.6 to 27.4 ppw) disappears to collect rocks, and Muddiemoose (from 95.2 to 31.5 ppw) gets distracted by rutting season, the cupboard is bare. The last four rounds were very ugly.
Metalcrusher (from 184 to 83.4 ppw) was immense again, but the aforementioned holiday stifled his output. MWPP (from 76.8 to 56.0 ppw), I Dont Care (from 52.1 to 52.9 ppw), Western Stand Warrior (from 96.3 to 40.2 ppw), Millky95 (from 97.3 to 34.3 ppw), tony (from 27.9 to 21.4 ppw), Matera92 (from 13.3 to 11.8 ppw) and Broken were solid, but would find themselves drowning in opposition posts once they lost their support: the Bears' 47.50% match thread share was the third lowest in the league, and once Crushy went on holidays that number dropped noticeably.
Compared to last season, the Bears went from 13,210 total posts (2nd) from 15.56 posters a week (7th) to 6,830 total posts (8th) from 12.59 posters per week (comfortably last in the league); no doubt the biggest drop off from Season 30 to 31. Their lack of depth was shown up by a league low 10 posters with >2% team contribution, and league low 10 posters with 5+ posts per week. But on the plus side, their core (especially when they turn up) were very solid: the Bears were ranked third in the league for players with 20+ posts per week (9) and best in the league for players with >5% of team contribution!
So the solution for next season for MWPP is quite simple: don't let Metalcrusher go on holidays, stop guero's rock addition, and find 4-5 posters from somewhere to chip in with a meagre 10 posts per week. All of a sudden things will look roses.

    1622892797227.png
When it was announced in the off-season that BLUEALLTHRU (124 ppw in Season 30) and RobR (114 ppw in Season 30) were leaving the Roys, there was some concern that the club would be in a bit of strife this season. Between them they contributed 33.8% of the Roys posts last season, and losing them was a massive hit. To top it off the Roys lost 3KZ is Football (10.9 ppw in Season) to account deactivation. We shouldn't have worried. The Dingster rookie machine cranked into action, and four new rookies were added to their books: Aristotle Pickett, Zevon, Freo_4eva and WaywardSonSon. TedDougChris then lured a trio of former players to the Roys: Wosh, Barrels and FitzroyRamone. And the cherry on top was TDC stealing cats2rise (29.8 ppw in Season 30) from the Gumbies.
These additions saw the average number of Roys in each match thread to increase from 16.25 (6th) to 17.41 this season (best in the league), whilst only decreasing their raw posting numbers by 13.8% from 11,269 (4th) to 9,716 (3rd) and actually climbing the SFA ranks in that category due to other teams dropping further.
These numbers are even more surprisingly given that several of their most prolific posters from Season 30 went backwards this season: Supersuns (from 107 to 94.9 ppw including the last five rounds when he "retired"), TedDougChris (from 98.6 to 73.0 ppw), Dingster (from 75.8 to 69.5 ppw) and fitzroybowiedog (from 37.3 to 37.1 ppw) all reduced output. A Bit High (from 8.9 to 0.0 ppw) and I bleed Blue (from 5.0 to 0.1 ppw) also seemed to check out of the league entirely, and FitzroyRamone (0.4 ppw) and WaywardSonSon (1.2 ppw) only lasted one and three weeks respectively.
But some of the recruits went big: Wosh (74.5 ppw), Aristotle Pickett (28.6 ppw), cats2rise (10.5 ppw), Barrels (9.4 ppw) and Zevon (7.4 ppw) were all successes, and a handful of their mid-tier players stepped up too: JackNah_8 (from 20.9 to 25.5 ppw), Runk (from 10.6 to 20.2 ppw), royboy2 (from 4.6 to 12.8 ppw) and Allikat (from 1.7 to 5.9 ppw).
And then there was Mobbs....dear old Mobbs (from 54.0 to 78.6 ppw). He decided that he needed a break at the start of the season, and wasn't seen until Round 7. But when he arrived, he was back to his vintage best. Ignoring those first six rounds he actually averaged 121 ppw! His Round 15 254 post effort was something to behold, and he carried the narrative in Roys threads for the second half of the season.
The Roys had 25 players post in match threads this season, which was the best in the league. They had the second most players with an average of 5+ posts a week (15), third most with 10+ posts a week (12) and third most with 20+ posts a week (9). They posted more than 300 posts every week, and were the second best for 600+ post weeks (7). They contributed 55.93% of their match threads this season (2nd), and their reliance on their Top 5 posters was the third least in the league (68.33%).
Good depth, good posting numbers, and great engagement from most of their squad. A couple of rookies to replace some inactives is all that is needed.

    1622906224590.png
Coming into this season philreich's Swamprats were looking strong. They'd had another good season on the qooty field in Season 30, and had a very healthy list. The only loss of note over the off-season had been akkaps (19.2 ppw in Season 30), and they'd replaced him with Hatchy1992 (16.4 ppw in Season 30) and a trio of rookies: Catsnlakers, FishingRick04 and powerrrrrrrrrrrr.
A curious note about the Swamprats numbers: between Seasons 28 and 29 there was a 24 post difference in the total Swamprats match thread post count across each season. But between Season 30 and this season...there was only a 1 post difference! Albeit with an extra round in there, but still statistically very improbable. Unfortunately for the Rats, it was still only ranked 10th in the league, and it coincided with a noticeable drop in the average number of posters turning up each week - from 17.44 (3rd) to 15.76 (5th).
So what caused this? Well...probably because the sim didn't favour the Swamprats for the first time since Mobbs traded in his Commodore 64. Several Rats abandoned ship like fleeing...rats. Ant Bear (from 27.3 to 16.9 ppw) disappeared after Round 10, Sparkle (from 31.4 to 3.4 ppw) wasn't seen after Round 10, Wojcinski (from 8.0 to 0.1 ppw) only appeared twice all season, Firestarter (from 18.9 to 12.1 ppw) missed the few few weeks, SarahSmiles (from 48.6 to 19.1 ppw) was nowhere near as engaged, Nunez (from 16.8 to 4.9 ppw) seemed to lose interest, as did LukeParkerno1 (from 6.8 to 2.6 ppw). All of them missed multiple match threads throughout the season.
But their posting numbers didn't crash, and it was the likes of philreich (from 73.1 to 64.9 ppw), jackster83 (from 36.9 to 41.3 ppw) and GremioPower (from 29.9 to 35.8 ppw) who anchored the team. Then there were big up-ticks in activity from MannumPower (from 17.6 to 44.2 ppw) and Power Raid (from 5.5 to 21.1 ppw) to compliment the 100% strike rate with the recruits Hatchy1992 (16.4 ppw), Catsnlakers (40.9 ppw), FishingRick04 (3.9 ppw) and powerrrrrrrrrrrr (10.4 ppw).
The Swamprats were the closest team to a perfect 50% match thread contribution, with their 50.34% ranked 7th. They have a good spread of posters (when they show up) so they have a low reliance on their Top 5 posters at 62.51% and are ranked #3 for players with >5% of their team contribution (9). They are a bit light on for big volume posters though, with their 6 posters averaging over 20 posts a week ranked 8th in the league. Concerningly they failed to reach 300 posts in a match thread on 6 occasions this season, which was only better than the Royals and Wonders.
So the Rats still have a nicely balanced list, but far too many of them went missing for weeks at a time this season. It could possibly be a changing of the guard, but luckily they had three good rookies come through who can be part of the next wave of Rats. More rookies are in order for next season, although a big name poster recruit could really help take the pressure off philreich - especially given a few retirements appear to be on the horizon.

    1622956140313.png
The West Coast Wonders. Surely one of the most baffling squads of Season 31. Their highs are so high, and yet their lows are so low. New skipper Mozzie19 aka cadsky (113 ppw in Season 30) was parachuted into the Wonders in the off-season, as the old guard looked to revitalise their list. On top of the huge cleanout they had at the end of the previous season, they also lost this off-season Bonz (29.8 ppw in Season 30), Jack The Godfather (8.7 ppw om Season 30) and a plethora of inactives. But concerningly there were reports that multiple other Wonders had held off retirement for a season given the state their list was in.
To replace them Mozzie19 brought in former teammate ArdentEagle (6.5 ppw in Season 30), lured akkaps across from the Rats (19.2 ppw in Season 30) and picked up craffles (0.1 ppw in Season 30) from the scrapheap. They landed two rookies in mezaire and Off Tap, and saw a couple of returning players join up in Kangaroos4eva and mike123 (from Round 5). These moves all looked good for Wonders and should have had them turning the corner.
And for the first five rounds things looked great. They averaged 628 posts a week from 19.2 posters a week, which had them ranked #2 in the league on both counts. But then players lost interest. Mozzie19 managed to still get most of his troops to front up each week, but their engagement was minimal. Over the last twelve weeks of the season they didn't get above 300 total posts once, and none of the last six weeks even got beyond 200. Their Round 16 showing of 107 posts with only three posters in double figures was one of the lowlights of the season. By the end, their 5,363 total posts was ranked 11th in the league, and was even a drop from last season's effort of 6,147 (also 11th). On a positive note, even though several players did nothing more than ackowledge the result of the sim on Sunday evening, at least they showed up: their 15.71 posters per week (6th) was an improvement on last season's 13.88 (10th), and gives the Wonders LG something to work with.
Mozzie19 (from 113 to 74.9 ppw) was by far their most important poster in match threads, and the work he put in to engage with opponents and tag in his teammates frequently was admirable. He had good support from recruits mike123 (19.6 ppw) and ArdentEagle (36.6 ppw), and veterans ClarkeM (from 111 to 24.5 ppw) and Grand Uncle Horace (from 53.3 to 33.5 ppw) - but quite a few core posters were part of the group that disengaged after Round 5: dogs105 (from 1.6 to 19.1 ppw), SweetD (from 40.3 to 17.7 ppw), SSwans2011 (from 51.4 to 9.1 ppw), @Croweater_41 (from 2.6 to 16.2 ppw), jezzajay (from 5.6 to 9.3 ppw) and JT_the_Man (from 5.6 to 7.9 ppw) were all looking great in those early rounds, but all faded away for various reasons.
Unfortunately there were more busts on the rookie front, with both mezaire and Off Tap not seen after Round 3. Recruit craffles also drifted away after the anger from his delisting from the Warriors calmed, whilst akkaps (from 19.2 to 2.6 ppw) was not seen after Round 7. Then there were AngryRanga, bomberlegend2007, Sab22, Crusty Undies and BlueMaster1 who all made appearances in the opening rounds, but disappeared as the season progressed.
On the plus side, getting all but once of their listed players to post at least once this season was a fantastic effort - and their 25 players who did so was a league high. They were also ranked #1 for the number of players with 2+% of team contribution (15), and were ranked #2 for the number of posters with 5+ posts per week (15). But it is just so hard to read into those statistics given how skewed their posting numbers were to the opening five weeks of the season. At the end of the day their 41.93% posting share of their match threads (11th) is telling, as is only surpassing 300 match thread posts five times all season (11th).
Ultimately the problem for the Wonders is that after Round 5, only Mozzie19, ArdentEagle, mike123, ClarkeM and Grand Uncle Horace were putting in substantial posting numbers. Mozzie19 needs to find a way to re-engage the rest of his squad, whilst also continuing the rebuild that will take another season or two yet. The lack of players from the last four rookie classes in their ranks is the huge red flag for him, and is the major stumbling block for getting the Wonders back up to the top.
    Grade: A-....then F. So I'll balance it out to a D+.
