Want to highlight what I felt about the Setanta/Frankling match up. I feel it was a good decision to play Setanta on him and feel that Denis was wrong to take him away from Buddy.

Could have sent the runner out or even dragged him for a minute talk but to take him off him imo was wrong. One of the journos asked Denis about it after the game and Denis just blocked him. The journo had the same observation that I did. Goal 1 Setanta was on the wrong side of the pack [bad decision]. Goal 2 was a mongrel that dropped into Buddy's arms [no fault of Setanta's]. Goal 3 Setanta got down low to meet the ball and fell and Buddy kicked a blinder.[ showed that at least Setanta had learnt from not getting down low a few eeks ago]

Why not leave him there to learn to fight through situations that arise throughout games. It wasn't like he was shot..it was more like Buddy had a hot streak and was assisted by circumstance. Clarkson left Croad on Fev all day and then defended him after the game. Croad imo was less effective on Fev than Setanta was on Buddy. If Setanta had of been caught twice for holding the ball like Croad was then Cartlon some supporters would have stoned him.

Setanta has real ability and Pagan needs to have more faith in this and handle him with more awareness. Our season is shot. Why not really develop players for next year by taking advantage of situations like this.

Pumped I agree with your evaluation.

But consider what may have happened if Setanta got slaughtered by staying with Buddy. Some supporters would have torn Setanta to shreds and maybe Pagan is still protecting him a bit as it really is his first senior season.

We supporters can be a fickle lot.

I thought Walker may of played on Franklin.

I thought Setanta played well in the last half yesty, he has a strong spoil, he attacks the ball and tries to contest hard.

He did a wonderful bit of play, which in my eyes was play of the day. He took a great contested mark and straight away just took off straight up the guts, kicked long to Lappin and hit him on the nipple and he turned around and kicked it down the throat of Fev who turned around and slotted it.

That bit of play showed Setanta O'Hailpin has it and he will become an attacking defender.

Setanta only had one bad kick yesterday, the rest were A-Grade kicks. He snapped one deep in defence in the pocket, it looked a little smart for his own good but he hit the traget very well. He also passed to someone lace out in a dangerous kick to a leading player in the centre - if he stuffed that it would have been costly.

I do agree with you on the supporters I just think Denis made a very quick and weak decision. I feel that Setanta still had enough in him to go with Buddy. As I suggested even a quick talk on the phone to re assure him would have been a better first option.

My gut feeling was and is that Denis didn't go deep enough in his decision. Whilst I respect Denis' footy brillinace I just think he is lacking in his instict these days. He is like a champion footballer who is rusty and just slightly off the pace. He can still get a kick but is so not delivering what he could.

I was really impressed with Setanta and once his footskills improve, he could be Carltons very own 'Buddy'.

I just feel that Pagan didn't want to 'do a Dawson' on him and risk losing the match by keeping Setanta on him (after Franklin kicked 4 in 6 minutes or something).

Excellent line, well summed up.

should be added to the new footy vocab! :thumbsu:

Agree. I really like Setanta’s attitude. And while he doesn’t lose his confidence, Denis should continue to play him. He has a natural attacking instinct, and despite all the attention on his kicking skills, he seems to hit targets more than most. If he continues to progress, we’ll have a 6’7” athletic attacking defender, that can play wing and forward if needed. Setanta adds an extra dimension to our team. Franklin had a great game yesterday, but Setanta is one of the few in the comp that can match or even surpass his athleticism. Can see these 2 having plenty of duels over the next few years. :)

Hi Parrot,

Like your descriptions of Setanta. Think he will be best suited to defence but could also perhaps run in the ruck at times. I also think he could have some great battles with players like Buddy.

didn't see it that way myself. He talked openly about it, why he made the move and the fact that Setanta came back on and did much better. Also said he will play again next week.

You are correct. Everything is open to interpretation. I felt that Denis jumped all over the guy and din't let him speak. In my opinion all Denis did was back his reasons for playing McGrath there. Yes he did say Setanta would play next week but kept repeating his imo stupid 'ride the wave ' comment.

I believe if Denis took some more time to understand the wave [ Setanta] that he would get a far more smooth and enjoyable ride from it. The journo made a really good point and Denis could do worse than start listening to others around him.

I only saw parts of the game on foxtel, was interested in who our backs matched up on.

I thought Walker would've played on Franklin for sure, can someone please post the matchups as they lined up at beginning of game.

Very impressed by him - looked calm and composed and had some very good kicks in defense. Coming along nicely in the last month - getting used to playing in the highest league.
