Settling players into the team

The Doggies are coming. Next year they improve again. Hamling will put on more weight, they will gain another defender in the trade period and they will also welcome back their best player in Liberatore.
They hunt in packs and they win clearances without even having a capable ruckman supplying them first use. They also play footy the right way. They almost beat Adelaide in their first finals appearance for most of the team. Next year, we won't be beating them, nor will many other teams.
Port Adelaide also have a great young list. They have genuine rucks, young defenders and one of the best young midfield's in the caper. They just need to try and track down a solid key forward.

The other one is Gold Coast. They'll finally make finals next year I reckon. Get back most of the blokes who missed because of injury and they'll be almost unbeatable at home.

As for Geelong, lol, we drew with St Kilda and lost to Melbourne on our home deck. We are going South and not the other way around.
We drew with St Kilda. We also belted the Bulldogs, remember?

and it's why our team play with very little chemistry or cohesiveness. There are blokes coming in and out of the line up every month for whatever reasons (mostly injury related).

Next year there's going be more chances again. Horlin-Smith probably plays every second week, Clark misses a couple weeks here and there and we bring in Kersten to fill the void. Hawkins just hasn't got a settled forward line around him. Must be frustrating to play at the moment.
Can't disagree at all... any good team in any sport in the world is normally a settled on.

You learn how each other play, move, communicate etc etc...

And we just haven't seen it for a few years

So, the distorted draft has succeeded in lowering the overall standard of the competition for upwards of 5 years, but has totally failed to do what it was meant to do.

I think the Giants are making it work for them so far, but GC have stuffed it up badly, I guess GAjr will have to be happy with the $s instead.

I had to laugh in the paper after the Saints n Cats draw. one of the Saints players said that draw was like a win for (didn't look like that to me after the game they were down on knees with heads in hands, we kick the last score to draw it). This is why I don't respect the Saints, thinking a draw is a win is what losers think like.

I'm so pleased GC has stuffed it so royally. For two reasons:

1. Gary lol

2. 2 x quality expansion teams would have been a real blight to contend with. Can you imagine the Cats getting a strong outfit together around 2017, 2018, only to miss out on a flag due to bad timing? I.e. the opposite of this Hawks outfit, that has had the best timing imaginable...

As for the OP, it's a good point.

I think a side can bring in a large number of players and develop sufficiently good chemistry to win a flag within 12 months, provided that the 22 is pretty settled throughout the year. I.e. the real issue will be injuries.

For example, I can't see us winning the flag with Henderson switching back and forward all season because Clark and Vardy are in and out through injury. Nor can I see us getting the absolute best value out of Danger if outside runners like Duncan and Motlop miss large chunks through injury.

If the state of the team as a whole is such that both of those players are able to focus on what they do best, then they'll make a huge difference.

Yeah never liked the idea of the 2 new teams. Should have left NSW n QLD to their own codes.

I don't know about Henderson or others that come in will improve us or not, But PD will be good for us, Take some of the heat off selwood, Duncan, Motlop And Caddy will not suffer from this. And if any of those players are poached or leave(like some of the rumours I've read lately), then we will be glad that we got PD. And by the time he retires those younger players will be in their prime.

No doubt PD will be good regardless.

Especially considering its the off season

Actually, they may suffer. A bit like Tippett and Franklin. With them the ball only goes down the forward line so often. Not like the ball is going to go down there more, just because. Tippett suffered. Caddy will probably suffer. Caddy does a lot of the work now we are expecting PD to do next year. Second half of the season we started to see Caddy coming out of the box. If PD turns up, he will be back in the box a little methinks. Everyone has a role to play.

I think the biggest impact of Dangerfield arrival is that it will free up Selwood to spend less time at the bottom of packs. He'll be able to drift forward more often. Johnson's absence in the midfield this year made it really hard for Selwood despite Caddy and Guthrie's improvement.

I respect your theory RHS, remember when Bomber was coaching, especially between 07>10. We had Ablett, Bartel, Corey,Kelly, Johnson and Selwood. Who Bomber rotated through the middle every few minutes, I think all those experienced players around selwood accelerated his football nous. With none of those players in our mids, Selwood is the most experienced and he's not getting protected now. I think one more experienced mid(PD) will only help us. Teams will now have to use two negating players if they want to stop both JS n PD. which would make it easier for Caddy, Guthrie to find more of the footy. And if teams only tag one of JS n PD, well I for one would enjoy watching either of them breaking through and sending it up forward, or passing it off to a Caddy, Guthrie, Mots. And as I wrote before in another post what if we lose some mids(Duncan this yr Caddy yr last I think) for long periods of the season. I only see this as a positive, guess only time will tell.

I said we drew with St Kilda didn't I?

We belted the Bulldogs?
Please explain Reg
I love opinions but when you post false garbage like you did, well, I take exception to it is all :p

Typifies the Geelong supporter of today unfortunately . . . delusional.

Amazing how they could've kept half of the first round picks and used the rest picking up James Kelly-type players that would've made a world of difference both in the short term and long.

Seems yesterday's result has pissed you off a fair bit...well you and alot of us both. We WILL be better next year.

Controlled the game from go to whoah. Without our captain and best midfielder. Without a ruckman. Outplayed them all game. The score line flattered them. Our young players stepped up to take on your heroes, and took them to school.

I also love opinions, but eternal pessimists can say the strangest things. One of them is claiming the "realist" mantle. :D

Oh I see so you have now gone from belting the Dogs to controlling the game without us having Selwood :D
You do realize they were missing Liberatore?

Scoreline may have flattered them but we only won the game by 8 points so stop with this bullshit about us belting them when we clearly did not.

We belted them Bobby. You're talking utter garbage once again.

Doggies lost to St Kilda, Brisbane, and Melbourne too this year. They had off days just like Geelong did against Melb, Saints, and Pies.
They also struggled away from the etihad. That needs to be addressed if they want to progress as finals are scarcely played under the roof.
