Wednesday footy matches were the staple for many years irl.

On SM-A146P using BigFooty.com mobile app
Feel like we had some matches posted on Wednesdays way back when. I vaguely recall logging in for a mid-week morning match. Perhaps it was SoO... hmmm.

Definitely remember Monday morning matches... that was back in the three page match thread era haha.

Honest question, how do you think this will be reflected in Sweet FA plus?

I think it's easiest to include Rd 15a with Rd 15 and so forth. Less mess that way, just three teams will play "twice" in a round.

---

On a public note, the Sweet FA fixture is very complex. 13 teams and 2 byes is not fun for anyone. I have an idea as to how to pan this out better for Season 38 with the outlier (game/s) but for Season 37, this ticks all of the boxes, eliminates 7 teams' second byes, reduces 5 team's second byes so it becomes a half bye and the Gumbies who have Rd 1 bye (per their request), will have a second bye in full later in the season.

Thanks to the clubs for their understanding and full support to eliminate the impact of byes where possible. Hoping Season 38 we have a slightly better system in place.

If anyone is thinking expansion, two things. 1. Your expansion club could be the fastest accepted club per the constraints of the fixture with an odd number of teams. And 2. Your club could be the last ever expansion admitted to the Sweet FA. Just my thoughts on that one as we approach a new season...

Subdividing rounds is a bold strategy ClarkeM and it's just so wacky that it may well work.

Unrelated question - are you a property developer irl?

It is not really built to include a letter in a round number. The more important matter, in my opinion, is that it just ruins the integrity of the data of the last 36 seasons. One example is that if you want data on say, the highest total score in a round, it is compromised by the fact you have clubs playing twice in a round. It is bad enough we have a few players that were allowed to play for two clubs in the same week in earlier seasons.

There is nothing wrong with a normal fixture. Even with having a 13th club, you can even up the amount of times a club plays another club over the course of a few seasons.

This is the most absurd fixture I have ever seen in my time here and I am not even sure there is a valid reason to convince me it is anything other than change because we are bored.

Also the idea of mid-week games is not one I care for, but that is the least of these problems.

Don't count them as part of the same round then. Easy solution then is to consider all three games that exist as outliers as their own round, "Round 18" which is just played over three separate dates. It's really not that hard to fathom.

Round 18:
Thursday, 9 May, 2024

Ophidian Old Boys v Gumbies FFC
Thursday 16 May, 2024
Baghdad Bombers v West Coast Wonders
Wednesday 22 May, 2024
Sin City Swamprats v Roys FFC
BYES: 7/13 clubs

It would be this "normally" speaking anyway - however by playing them midweek, 5/6 clubs will not have a full week off qooty.

The example you're choosing here is a very specific request for data which can simply be explained by - "oh, the fixture was like that".

You're forgetting that clubs have made requests as to who they want to play twice and this has been taken into account too. You're right in that you could have it so over the course of three seasons, a club plays 4 teams twice, but it's just not realistic to schedule this with requests in place. You remove requests and we could plan the next three seasons of fixtures (however there will always be an outlier game...)

Season 38 fixture skeleton is being drafted as we speak. I'm likely proposing that the Grand Final rematch is played as a Round 0 once-off match thereby eliminating the impact of 11/13 byes and we're back to a somewhat normal fixture. This fixture is designed to eliminate the second byes as must as possible while also getting rid of "mega-bye rounds" so by playing mid-week matches, we lessen the impact of 5 team's second byes whilst also eliminating 7 other team's byes. It's all explained and it's all been supported by the clubs for a reason.

We could go back to 13 round seasons but think we can all agree, that was the worst.

Maybe you should lead the campaign for an expansion club ;).

Heck, if you want to be a stickler, Just give them their own round numbers up to 20 in chronologically order. This is what we did in Season 36 so it can be done again in Season 37.

Your issue appears to be with the nomenclature of the rounds. It's really not that big of a deal and can be fixed easily to a more compromised solution.

Whatever works best for Sweet FA Plus in regards to its labelling I'm sure we'd be happy to settle on.

You are perhaps fairly accurate on the second point. My singular and earnest request is to refrain from incorporating any lettering or anything that goes beyond the scope of what we have used in the last 36 seasons. I don't have any immediate plans to actively work on anything other than updating the statistics weekly on Sweet F.A+ as I wish to have other focuses and it can be quite consuming.

Beyond that, my perspectives are primarily personal, with the proposed changes appearing completely nonsensical to me.

One of the great things about Sweet F.A is that participation is entirely voluntary. If the league decides on what would be most unconventional and have a club play ten games in a single round or prevent us from playing on a Sunday because we should be spending our time at the Church of our Saviour, Mobbs, so be it. Go for it. I may not personally endorse it or even take part in it. My objection is going to be a pretty straightforward expression (which is the case when I said I believe it ruins the integrity of the previous convention).

If I, someone who is vehemently opposed to a shorter season, was to be asked to choose between whatever this fixture is and a shorter season, I would take the shorter season every time.

Lettering was merely put there to separate the game from the round while also acknowledging where the game is being played and why it's being played there.

What do you think is the best method, calling all three games as "Round 17" (Original R17 then becomes Round R18 chronologically) and your website reflects it as how a normal round looks OR we give each game its own round number?

Not to poke the bear too much here but it was really great to have feedback and input from 12 of the 13 clubs on the fixture before it was approved and adopted ;).

It is all an unnecessary mess that I think is ugly. With a gun to my head, factoring in the dates, I would choose to give each game an individual round and bump it all up by one. Did we not do that last season?

Also just to note the following scenarios:
  • Single-game rounds
  • Rounds 15 & 16 - where games are played on a Monday
I don't intend to make it all about me, but I just want to note that I will only be doing one update a week, which I intend to continue to be on a Sunday night. Anything that precedes that day will be uploaded and anything beyond that will compromise the ladder and statistics for an entire week, as noted above. At present that is Round 15 & 16, when it will only resolve itself after Round 17 (the end of the Home & Away fixture). Of course, Sweet F.A+ is not the be-all and end-all and anyone is more than welcome to make up the deficit and update statistics on their own or in another thread if they so please. I will likely just remove the ladder in this situation if it is going to be updated more frequently in this thread, as my preference is personally just to use this thread. I think it provides more interactivity anyway.

We merged two rounds last season into one and gave the one outlier game it's own round, technically speaking. OOB then played two matches simultaneously (Rounds 15 and 16 at the same time I think it was?).

The rest of your post is all very reasonable. Absolutely, we can post the ladder accordingly in here just as always has happened prior to Sweet FA+ and during.

It's important to note that there may be more Monday matches that as advised above. I'm aware of at least one club proposing to play an Easter Monday match and so if that request happens and is approved, then that's just how it is.

An appeasing solution would be to turn the Thursday games to Wednesday night games and then the two Mondays become Sunday matches. I would err against it but if the clubs themselves wish to play their game on Sunday night then by all means, they can go for it. It would mean shorter match threads though for the Wednesday night game which is another reason why games have been spaced out - to still give teams 4-5 days of banter with a game at the end to replicate a full match and in doing so once, 5/6 teams can forego their full bye.

On behalf of the Ophidian Old Boys I'd like to genuinely thank you for all the effort and time you have put into the fixture ClarkeM

Obviously its not easy with the odd number of teams and you would never have been able to please everyone, but we at Spotswood appreciate your efforts and support the current fixture as posted.

Suck up

Oh wait it's to me. Well thank you boo xx

But all in all, it's not necessary. I enjoy this stuff and it gave me something to do during my downtime. Even when my not-downtime is doing similar s**t haha.
