Round One - Away vs Roy

​

Hey Wazzas, another season of qooty has rolled around again and with it the first match review of the season. We take a butcher's at how the previous round went, check out some cumulative stats, vote on a couple of things and look ahead to the coming week's shenanigans. Before we dive into what happened in round one, a shout out is due to TheInjuryFactory for the headers this season and to The Filth Wizard for the Gene arrival. Chef's kisses for the both of you!

In a repeat of last season, we found ourselves up against the Roys in round one albeit at their joint not ours. It's a bit of a new look Roy, with long-time captain TedDougChris shuffling off this virtual coil and apparent heir Zevon moving on to the re-rebranded bin chickens. But some things never change, and one of those being that the Roys are pretty much the Mobbs Show. The omnipresent one was... well, omnipresent throughout the week, revealing deliberately-placed safety hazards in the change rooms and a sewer route between their joint and ours before opening up the real estate agency for a few Warriors to claim residences for themselves. There were other Roys that came and said hello, but 241 posts meant that Mobbs was by far the loudest voice from th hosts. From our end, 18 Coney Islanders made their way to the match thread in an encouraging start to our 20th season.

Another thing that never changes is the Roys getting the rub of the green in our match day encounters. In my time here we had played each other 11 times with the record being two wins and nine losses. We hadn't won a match in round one since season 31 and we were also on a five game losing streak overall, so all these things would mean that a balancing victory would be on the cards. And for most of the first quarter of wet weather qooty it looked like balance would be restored as we held the lead for the first 20 minutes, and then normal service resumed as we conceded six of the next seven goals with the only respite being a goal from Stokey with his first kick back in the SFA saw us 28 points down. A couple of face savers though cut the lead back to 16 at the main break, however that lead was back out to 32 points at the final change. We won the final quarter, but not by enough to be a chance as the fat lady sang to the tune of 22 points.

It was a smaller loss to the one we copped from round one last season so some would say we've improved. Others would say we're still crap and you know what, both are correct. As a result we found ourselves ninth on the ladder at the end of the round as a couple of other teams copped hidings and the reigning premiers sat on their plasticine arses all week.

The rain meant that the stats were subdued for the match, but there were a few notable performances. TheInjuryFactory (21 disposals/4 marks) led the team in touches, FootyGuy13 (17 disposals/8 marks/3 tackles) & Reginald Perrin (16 disposals/8 marks/1 goal) marked everything in sight, Stokey & The Filth Wizard kicked a brace of goals each while oldmate made a shock return to the ruck and decided to kick goals instead. The defensive group of Freofalcon Mesc Dinsdale & Purple7x08_24 toiled manfully in the mud while Paracleet marked his debut game with 10 disposals and 2 marks who, like a few others, received The Donald treatment and found themselves in unfamiliar positions.

The other thing we run is the Pwned Trophy, which has been described as an award given "to the player who makes the opposition melt the hardest and the rest of us laugh our arses off. It is one of the club's highest honours, passed down through the generations of Wazzas in recognition of their services to lulz".

Ocha905 kinda took the nominating of posts to new levels last season. Whether his devotion to this gets a case of the second season blues I'm not sure, but the onus is on all of us to find posts that meet the criteria. Some weeks it's easy if there's argy bargy in the match thread, others not so much. It was more so the latter with the Roys, to the point that much of the banter was between pantskyle & The Filth Wizard with a bit of MAFS bashing thrown in.
