Senior games were different times. Was possible to catch glimpses of both like I did and a few opposition onlookers did.

St Pauls are equal favs with Chelt and Dingley and based on the players they have picked up, there is no reason to think they won't be playing deep into the finals, the rest is up to them.

If he plays enough games, Matty O'Brien will finish top 3 in the league b and f at minimum.

As for paying players, the whole system is a sham.

I’m not so certain the whole system is a sham. Dollars have been around for years and some, just like everything else the dollar is greater in recent times than the past but that’s the world we live in. Inflation.

But what will be evident is who steps up and who doesn’t make the grade, there will be no where to hide for any club or individual in a season that on the surface looks as tight as it ever has in recent memory

Tightly contested comp this season. Be interesting to see if Port Colts and East Brighton can bridge the gap to the top 5, both high turnover high profile recruits , spend big. We will know where most sit by about round 5-6 , who has spent wisely and who has not.

The standard of the coaching has really increased with the standard of the play too. Looking forward to rolling around the grounds again and watching and comparing competitions again

For what it’s worth and speaking to some current division 1 coaches on how their lists are travelling and watching a fair few Praccys heres a stab at the end of season ladder in order

I went to both St Pauls v Parkdale & Ormond v Beena for a half each.

St Pauls looked a different team to last season with a bit of player turnover. Have recruited 2 beasts, not sure if these are the guys from Benalla or not but one got a bit frustrated with the delivery of ball to him. They missed Kreymborg up forward to finish. Parkdale looked the better team from what I saw in the half with better ball movement where St Pauls liked to win contested footy more. I guess its the 2 different game styles between the comps

Hard to read the result from Beena v Ormond. Beena looked good to be close to full strength (everyone debates this in praccy matches) vs Ormond who must have a heap out. No Lucas Cloke for Beena & Tolongs hammy up forward.

No disrespect to Bedford's mob but I'm hoping there was a fair few 2s players out there. Otherwise there was a big difference between C Grade Parkdale & D grade Ormond. If not Beena looked pretty good will not get relegated & Bentleigh may be in a heap of trouble.

A fair report , i think Beena had 1 or 2 out and will use 19s as well . No excuses ,but probably the1 ruck and 5 or 6 that go through the guts

Bedford - where do you see Ormond fitting in division wise if they ever did make the jump across to SFNL? Watching Beaumaris last year who were ‘B’ I thought they be bottom 2/3 Divi 1 at the time

Really hard to tell , Beaumaris were a basket case last year and lost so many players , probably due to the coach who's been retained . Ormond has a very young promising list , at the moment i would say Div2 with improvement to come . No doubt the parody account will have it's view

I have said it for years , the only future in the VAFA is for school and Uni clubs , Old Xavs will have 5 thirds sides , that's crap
Also many suburban clubs in the VAFA on the outer fringes are leaving , no one can compete

The VAFA give stand-alone non-school related clubs just enough to make them continue to fight but not enough to make them really competitive. Look what has happened up in the Northern League. Most of the VAFA teams have walked away and are now playing in the Northern FNL League because they can't complete with the big schools in the VAFA and are more like their northern FNL league counterparts who may improve by offering a few players some small salary incentives to play. If you are Prem C or Div 1 in VAFA, there is very little that you can offer someone to go to your club except for comradeship. And you hope that is the reason your u19s stay although if they are any good, they will go and look for coin somewhere. Hence teams like Old Paradians have left the VAFA and now play in the Northern League where they can pay players above the table. The Fact is the VAFA don't want any team to disrupt their cozy elitist system which is run by the top private schools for the top private schools.

Surely with their outlay and recruits in the All Stars don’t finish 7th. I guess it’s everyone’s opinion but they would be hugely disappointed if that was the case…big step backwards!
I have All Stars 3rd or 4th. Depth might be their biggest issue

A few of the younger guys were playing cricket grand finals so they will come back for the first game of the season but yes, this is exactly what we are saying. The overall playing numbers around the Bentleigh catchment area are decreasing considerably and it will start biting at reserves teams being able to field sides.

St Pauls have to rely on their juniors and call up u17s to make up numbers in their reserves teams by mid-winter. Its not always fair on the u17 as they have to play 2 games on the weekend, one against bigger bodied people.

With fewer junior teams as well, that puts pressure on numbers.

All the under 19s went to Ormond that was driven by one oor two of their leaders leaving the your before.

And it’s a credit to them as a club. I find it interesting so many clubs complain about Vafa this, APS that, oh there’s so many clubs in one area. My question to them is are you actually making a genuine effort to create a pathway for these kids to come through your club?
I can only really speak for East Brighton but if we can create a genuine pathway for our 900+ juniors to come through into our senior program then look out. Relationship with the junior club is the best it’s been.
Also think SFNL standard is rising across the board. If the 19’s and women’s comps keep growing and improve then the comp will be in an even better place.

With the culture as well, the amount of players who stick around after their games (19s, 3s, womans) to watch all games and get a big crowd going (more for home games) shows the love for the club. Big groups behind the goals as well as a full wing down at the arena

The coach of the St Pauls u19s Peter S moved from St Pauls to Hampton after it was determined they only had 13 players and would not have enough for a team. I think the boys followed him.

Amazing turn around for the Hampton Hammers. Was only a couple years back they had 1 team and no reserves and forfeited their position in division 2. now win both seniors and reserves in div 4, go up a division and have an influx of kids for u19s all in the space of 24 months

What’s the drawcard ? Not exactly great facilities and a pristine oval but none the less credit where credit is due to the volunteers who have navigated them to this position
