Just wondering if people think its time to give Ireland test status.

I think it is but I imagine the problem is that India probably don't want them to have it.

I also would like Ireland to have it for a couple other reasons

It would stop england flogging all their good players

I know it would take time but Aus v Ireland sporting contests are just awesome. Strong rivials on the field but the fans are respectful of each other and can have a beer together after the game.

I don't mind the idea of Ireland becoming a test playing nation. How they work it in would be interesting though. Could they slowly bring them in and say if England were touring here for 5 tests could we play a test against Ireland before so that Canberra or Hobart receive a test.

Then when we go to England we could play Ireland in a test in the lead up. I just can't imagine it been worth initially playing against them in a 3 test series.

Also I am not sure how cricket is perceived in Ireland. I know the country is going through some pretty rough times so maybe a bit of tourism that an international test series could bring in would help.

Yes

It;s got nothing to do with India. It would be the other smaller boards like Zim and Bangladesh against it, because Ireland would be another nation that gets a slice of the ICC pie

Let's be honest... anything to do with cricket, the issue is always going to be India. They've been pushing to change the revenue sharing model for ICC events to basically give themselves a 75% share. If the rest of the ICC members are powerless to stop that, it goes to show the sort of power they wield.

The advantage of a change to the revenue sharing model is that it makes the introduction of new Test nations less of a financial impact on other nations. BUT... I'd still be surprised if India were happy to have another predominantly anglo-saxon country voting on the ICC. So... I can't see it happening anytime soon.

If Ireland are given Test status they should have access to the Irish players who are/have represented England. Morgan and Rankin would be great additions to their line-up.

Yes. Would be easy beats for a long time, most likely 15 plus years. But countries cannot develop without being given a chance to compete at the longest form. Obviously all Irish players currently playing for other nations (Ie Morgan, Rankin) would be allowed to swap back with no waiting period. Would be well off the top 6 nations, likely for at least another 20 years minimum.

I'd actually like to see Australia play the lower ranked countries slightly more, even if for just a test series, or one off test in gaps on the calendar. Dont have the numbers, but it always seems as though 90% of our series are v england, SA, india, NZ and west indies ( who are admittedly crap now).

I think without all their troubles Afghanistan would also be near pushing for test status, and if the country ever sorts itself out will be a likely future test nation.

I don't think so.

If they were to be, they could be introduced with Afghanistan to create a two tier system with 6 nations in each.

A 2 tier system would be an excellent idea if it gets Ireland playing test cricket

It could expand the game to countries like Ireland realistically.

The second tier would consist of the Kiwi's, Windies, Bangas, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and Ireland.

The two fringe first tier sides would be Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

A system like this would be almost essential to grow test cricket and ensure the best sides regularly play each other.

A two tier system would be a death knell for the countries stuck in there, assuming that in a two tier system they would never get to play australia, india or england. i don't think the ICC has any power to ensure revenue sharing from the top nations to the smaller nations, so those smaller nations would struggle hard.

the current scheduling system is fine. try and maximise series between the big nations, but don't forget the smaller nations.

the plan should be to have ireland in pretty soon. it's been 10 years since bangladesh came in.

Big nations barely tour anyway.

not much but enough to keep them going. they rely heavily on getting one of australia, england or indian tour every couple of years. cutting that off would kill them.

IMO improvement and growth of the game lies in playing more cricket (derr). A tier system could potentially aid developing nations by providing a structure for constant competition, but an implicit assumption of that would be regular mixing with the bigger countries.

I don't mind a 2 tier system as long as long as there are games between the different tiers

For example teams in the same tier play each other home and away every four years but you also play teams in the other tier home and away every 6 years or something

This happened with Wessels didn't it? When South Africa where re-instated.

I agree. I think this could be a realistic possibility scheduling wise.

that's a more realistic option.

it's more or less what is happening now anyway...

I think they definitely deserve it and it'd be good for cricket. I can see how it'd hurt Bangladesh/Zimbabwe early on, but if they introduced another team along with Ireland (Afghanistan would struggle but seems one of the more realistic ideas, they could do home games in the UAE for the time being) they'd benefit from playing more cricket I think.

I just really don't like the status quo of the current 10 nations and I especially dislike the lack of hope for many smaller nations (Zimbabwe are included in this really). I can't see how a two team expansion would hurt the test arena if it was scheduled correctly.

Then again, the ICC/BCCI are all about keeping the status quo.
