First order of business for Murphy is to not play for a single free kick next week.

I don't care if he's getting scragged by Picken, keep your bloody feet and stop diving around hoping to attract a cheap free. Pathetic lazy option that time and again sees us with a man short at stoppages because Murph is lying on the ground looking imploringly up at the umpire like an injured fawn. A horrible example for the captain to set to the rest of the group.

Should Murph Step Up As Captain?

Showed a bit when he was the acting captain in 2012. Contrary to popular belief I think Murphy was the right choice at the time and he certainly can't be blamed for the teams poor form.

Mclean, Walker, Gibbs and Hendo are all players who really need to step up their game. They are letting us down more then Murphy is at the moment.

I haven't seen one single ounce of leadership from Walker who has that Paul Boweresque look in his eyes when running out of defence and Mclean is playing in the two's again.

Image of Hawthorn players kicking sand in our faces as we desperately scribble SOS on the beach.

The players need to challenge themselves and the Hawks are the toughest team in the comp. Anybody who lets themselves get pushed around by Melbourne needs to grow some balls and show a bit of mongrel.

This. Murphy should be keeping his feet at all times and never go to ground since the best mids always keep their feet.

We don't play the hawks until round 13.
Friday the 13th too! (scary)

hopefully the Balls will be fully grown by then!!!!!!!

It may have been a mistake to appoint him, but it would be a greater one to get rid of him. Carrots might be done at the end of the year, and Simmo can't have too many more years in his legs.

Stick with Murphy.

As has been posted by others above, I believe we have much bigger problems than our choice of captain. It can't all fall to him. Others have to stand up. Murphy receives very, very little support on the ground. The issue (one of) is that everyone is playing for themselves... kick it to me... kick it to me... no-one is giving him a chop out.

Make Simpson Co-captain to lighten the load and go from there.

This will be the least painful and most productive way about it. Murph can then hold the captaincy in title only (albeit 'jointly'), without he and the Club having to go through the humiliation of a resignation.

If he stands down, then he'll be called gutless for not being able to hack being a captain... to relinquish it would make him go more into his shell. The best thing for Murphy now is to believe in himself and pull himself out of this slump and be a leader.
The perceived 'optics' of a decision should have zero influence on what choices any club makes.
Look at the Hawks. For the good of the club, Mitchell relinquished the captaincy so that Hodge could step up. Media attention lasted for a few weeks before the press moved on to the next flavour of the moment. Seems to have been the right choice to make.

I think it would take huge balls for Murph to come out and say "I can't hack it as captain" but of course he'd be made to look like a coward and he'd cop it rough for maybe the rest of his career.

Anyway, he's obviously not a natural leader and I think being made captain was a poor career move but right now it's not too late for him. If you're not a natural leader you can manufacture yourself into one. He just needs to go in hard, show some guts. Maybe do a Barry Hall and clock someone smaller than him.

Not many of these around.

I'm not sure about the 'natural leader' tag. Bit of a throw away line. Just about anybody can learn to lead if they so desire. Murphy doesn't have the stereotypical qualities of a leader in that he's not a six foot six loud mouth with a cape on.
If in his heart he really wants to lead the team I think he can develop into a great captain. He reads the game very well and that will go along way to seeing him succeed.

Like others, I thought Carrazzo or Simpson would be a much better choice for captain.

Having said that, I doubt taking it off Murph would improve his confidence. I like the idea of promoting one of the other two into a co-captain role. Of course murphys leadership would be questioned by all and sundry if that were to occur but it's already the case. At least it won't look as bad as stepping down completely.

To go one step further, I would rather see our club innovate here and have no captain at all. Just a leadership group of senior players.

There really is no benefit in having someone named as captain. They flip the coin on most occasions but that's it. Both on field and off, the leading is done by senior players and I believe a culture where this exists is better than a singular person as captain. My guess is that the captaincy of footy clubs is a throw back to when the captain was also effectively the coach and actually made on field decisions like they would in cricket.

Finey was talking about this on SEN the other night.
Murphy and a few others need to make a stand this week.

18 maybe 22 Perhaps.

I want to see some torn jumpers out there, both ours and the dishlickers..

Lets scrap and fight.

And bugger it when that's done then lets play a bit of footy!!!!
