A Court in the crossfire: the syndrome threatening to derail Souths Patrick Smith | May 28, 2008

PEOPLE want to control football clubs for all manner of reasons.

Eddie McGuire heads Collingwood because it scraped at his soul that his beloved club was a mess on and off the field in the late 1990s. So he took matters into his own hands. Thank God he did for Collingwood's sake.
Cappuccino Kennett heads up Hawthorn because, in the AFL at least, presidency of a footy club can give you a bigger public profile than being state premier. And certainly substantially more than being a failed premier who was booted out by the voters.

Thus Cappuccino, conveniently for the media, froths at the very mention of a sound grab. But he is good for the club and his aggression empowers the supporters.

Rod Butterss took over at St Kilda in 2001, full of grand plans and outrageous confidence. He learnt quickly on the job, became a little less quotable and under his presidency the club reached two preliminary finals.

He resigned at the end of last year after deciding not to fight to the death a challenge from someone called Greg Westaway. Thus Westaway rode into power on the back of former players Nathan Burke and Andrew Thompson. Right now, St Kilda is in disarray and Westaway nowhere to be seen or heard.

Some decide to take over clubs to enhance their business profile. Others, such as David Smorgon at the Western Bulldogs, do it because there appears no other person is prepared to make the personal and financial sacrifice. Under Smorgon's administration the Bulldogs have been saved.

The Price Fixer runs the Sycophants at Carlton as though it were his private club. He once said that only he would decide when he left the club. So much for the members forking out their hard-earned. On the weekend the Price Fixer also made a unilateral declaration that Brendan Fevola should be signed for the next three years.

Wonder what the football committee thinks about that? Nonetheless, Richard Pratt can do no wrong at Carlton because he is filthy rich and Sycophants were broke.

Russell Crowe and Peter Holmes a Court saved South Sydney in the NRL. Poured millions into the all-but-defunct club. Saviours they were, and former glories beckoned. In 2007 the club was in the finals, this year in the doldrums. Best-dressed easybeats in the competition.

Thus critics are quick to point to private ownership in itself as the reason clubs fail. Like the Brisbane Bears at Carrara, like Geoff Edelsten's indulgent era with Sydney. North Melbourne's future remains in the balance because a small group of shareholders holds the balance of power at the club. Like Crowe and Holmes a Court.

But that is to miss the point. Private ownership is not the issue why clubs fall over or at least lose their way. It is lack of expertise. Both in business and in the sport itself. The history of football clubs is riddled with bad appointments. Men are put in charge of running the club because they could cut it in one business or another.

Holmes a Court is a businessman. That alone does not mean he can run a football club. Souths lost $4m in the first year of the Holmes a Court chairmanship. Footy clubs all over the land are quirky beasts.

Normal practices do not apply. For example: a simple equation that saw North Melbourne offered $50million to relocate to the Gold Coast was beaten down because of passion and loyalty. Not a skerrick of logic entered the debate. The result, inevitably, sees North no certainty to be part of the AFL beyond perhaps 2009.

The Price Fixer was smart enough to go and get the best chief executive he could when he consumed the Sycophants. Greg Swann is a savvy businessman and knows the rhythm of football intricately.

Nothing surprises him, there is nothing he cannot handle. At Footscray, Smorgon initially sought businessmen to run his club but they were not prepared for the peculiarities of the football industry. So they failed.

As they did at Melbourne and at Hawthorn. Some can be so infatuated with the heady atmosphere of club football and its profile that they reverse rational trends - they drop the BlackBerry and pick up the ball.

When Campbell Rose took over as chief executive at the Bulldogs he did not know a football from a donut. But he was inventive - eccentric if you like - and rebuilt the finances of the club in a manner not attempted before. He mostly left the football side of the club to the experts.

There is no reason South Sydney will not prosper but money and high-profile owners are not of themselves the answer. Left to their own devices they can prove disastrous. Football junkies, high on the rush and bubble of the changing rooms. It appears now that Crowe has tipped in more money. He is generous and loves his club.

But he should do no more than write the cheques and let the experts - former chief executive Shane Richardson has been recalled and respected coach John Lang brought in as a consultant - right the wrongs.

To safeguard clubs in the future we need a golden rule or two. Private owners must chip in money only, hold their tongues and resist the sporting-profile syndrome. Find versatile executives with the smarts to deal with the curious business animal that is football and find football managers who know the business of football mechanics.

Finally, a warning. Money guarantees nothing and private ownership can quickly lead to public humiliation.

It needs a name. Call it the Holmes a Court syndrome.

Fantastic, we are a certainty til at least the end of 2009. This is great news given that Fatprick quite recently said we would not last til the end of this season.

Chalk that one up as another victory to JB.

:thumbsu: Love it - you're right - he has given us an extra year.

I am reluctant to post his rambling crap but I think it is important to continue to expose his obvious hatred of our club.
I love the bit about our fight having "not a skerrick of logic". My belief is that one of the turning points of the whole Gold Coast issue was the WANM media release debunking the AFL's supposed $100mil offer as nothing more than smoke and mirrors. When WANM Chairman faced up to Smith on SEN Smith screamed almost hyterically at him over that claim. Barrett then picked up on the release and after a few personal briefings ran the story in the Hun as the first major attack on the AFL (and he paid the price with an Andy personal tirade).
Ironically now Smith quotes that we knocked back a $50mil offer from the AFL - I suppose that is his concession that we were correct, albeit illogical.

Yes it is interesting that these people have finally started referring to a $50 million offer instead of $100 million. Yet they refuse to break it down further. And they won't touch the fact that what remains after relocation costs, shareholder buyout and QLD promotions (ie not adding to the club's bottom line) was going to be paid for by a non-existent stadium deal.

Seeing that figure quoted has become one of life's small pleasures. Must thanks Russell_Ebert_Handball again!

Patrick Smith makes no sense in this column. Even more than usual, it's an incoherent rant, not a case for anything in particular - more an excuse for him to string his hilarious nicknames together and pretend it's a story.

Was there a point to that article?

Why hasn't Patrick Smith analysed how private ownership in the late 80s extened North Melbourne's place in the AFL for a further 20 years and delivered 2 Premierships in that time?

On the one hand, he warns against football clubs using people without any understanding of the industry, and on another, he admits that Campbell Rose had little knowledge of the AFL and has still thrived as the Bulldog's CEO.

Scratch the surface of any football club, and you'll find coteries full of business people generating money for the club.

I'm not a rugby league fan, but from the snippets I hear on TV, I'm pretty sure that South Sydney's poor season has been due to a horror run with injuries.

I suppose Fat Prick could have easily summarised his article with just this line, "Let the business people run the coporate side and let the football people run the football department. Do that, and you'll be fine". But then again, he probably gets paid by the word.

And he talks about our argument not having a skerrick of logic? This is just a rambling discourse with no apparent point.

And he talks about our argument not having a skerrick of logic?

I know, I know. In one paragraph, he criticises Carlton for taking the pragmatic decision to back Richard Pratt, and in another, he criticises North for not taking a "pragmatic" decision by turning down the Gold Coast.

He says that with Pratt and Fevola, the views of the Carlton members aren't being taken into consideration, and he seems to ignore that 33,000 members that seem to agree with JB's vision of North Melbourne remaining a Victorian club.

Seriously, the guy is still punch drunk from the "Patrick is a w***er" chant.

Speaking of the ironic, I heard on SEN yesterday that Robert Walls accused Mark Robinson of being....and I quote...."a lazy journalist".

I am going to try reverse psychology with Mr Smith... as it appears nothing else has worked...

I really enjoyed that article especially how well it was researched and the balanced arguments for both sides... his logical admission that North will struggle to exist past 2009 I found to be well explained and left me agreeing wholehearted with him on all points...:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Unfortunately that'll backfire because next week Fat Prick will write, "I have received letters from North fans supporting what I say. Even North fans see no future and Ball Burster Brayshaw has to understand that blah blah blabh"

Good idea Rooboy 96. I too found it positive and uplifting. It is great to be alive and well in this wonderful country with our team doing so well on and off field for a year or two and with all these other wonderful sports to play/watch.

It's also great that the paunchy, overwrought journalist who was shouting at David Wheaton and screaming earlier this year on SEN: 'they're gone KB, gone. Won't see out the year(2008), gone I tell you' appears to have been committed to an asylum and replaced at the Australian by this really positive Smith fellow.

What angers me most of all about this article is where was Patrick Smith when our club was being run by a pack incompetent self-centred administrators.

If only he, or any other journo had published articles criticising our past administration, perhaps the past administration would not have got away with running the club almost into the ground.
For some reason our past administration seem to have been some sort of a "protected species" as far as the media was concerned.

The only relevant point he makes is that of the "recalcitrant" shareholders refusing to hand their shares back. He should be having a go at them and not at the new administration and the brilliant job they are doing to make our club as successful as possible.

Smith still refuses to acknowledge the magnificent work done to date by our superstar CEO Eugene Arocca. Eugene remains invisible in Smith's eyes as apparently does JB and all the 33,660 members to date, of the revitalised North Melbourne Football Club.

Criticise those who deserve criticism not those who are trying to fix up the mess of others.

This is one of the stupidest articles I have ever read.

It has two redeeming features.

First gratuitous sledging of Kennet, Pratt, Westaway. There may be more, I glazed over.

Second, he is right on one pont - if those pricks of recalcitrant shareholders continue to behave like the spoilt, unacheiving dolts they are, then the club really will be in trouble.

The only problem with that is that for a lot of the time, we were playing in finals. At the moment, we all hate Dawson, but he was a key administrator during the 1990s.

And as long as a football club is playing in and winning finals, nobody is going to criticise these people (unless it's St.Kilda where they could fluke a Premiership and the board would still get spilled).

The thing that really should have been questioned was our move to play games in Sydney. We were the dpminant club in the country and should have been exploiting that and building up solid links with our Melbourne based fans. But nope - Miller decides that Sydney is the go.

Good lord, what a read.

'Cappuccino' and 'The Price Fixer'.

Classic.

God, yeah, what a load of crap. The thing that is so annoying about this is that he really, truly thinks he's clever with the nicknames he comes up with. And there's also a pathetic attempt to get a new expression into the language - see last line.

FATPRICK, you are NOT CLEVER, you are NOT FUNNY, you are of BELOW AVERAGE INTELLIGENCE. Stop deluding yourself that people read your stuff and admire the brilliant brain that created it - THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN! No-one is impressed by you.

(with apologies to Woodson re CAPS).

Some of you may remember that I stated that I emailed Patrick Smith a few weeks ago about an article he wrote about our shareholder situation. In his response he said we could count on his support if the need arised. Well I just sent him another email telling him what a hypocrite he is and asked whether he will also be supporting the Melbourne move to the Gold Coast as fervently he has done with North.

33.6k members Fat. How do you suppose we are going to fall over?

While 33,660 members is approx 10,000 more than last year it still keeps us marking time . Our $ profit per membership is low , we must get members on membership for life , upgrade memberships and increase reserve seats , increase coteries , player sponsors , increase all levels of sponsorships .

This is serious hard work and will form the longterm foundations for the club .

That is all correct. Fat's been saying this week though that we have made NO PROGRESS. Though obviously that comment speaks volumes about him and not us.

Greatest chant ever. That was a Magical night, give him one thing he had the balls to show up unlike cowro.

I wish people would stop making threads about what he has wrote in his newspaper , he is a fat , sour and negative piece of terd that does not deserve the pleasure of having our eyes reading his rubbish ! BTW , how many people here buy that newspaper ?

And oh how funny it is to keep calling Kennett a coffee. I'm no Kennett fan but it does reflect poorly on Smith's journalistic credentials to refer to Kennett as a failed Premier.

Smith's journalistic credentials ?

well

I am stuck

You give him too much credit.

I don't think he is a journalist

certainly doesn't give unbiased evenhanded perspective on issues .

Do not believe he has any credentials .

Cheated at cricket .

Says it all .

And if Kennett is a failed premier ?And I am a labour supporter .
Then Fatprik must be a frothy decafe .

'Not a skerrick of logic'??????

Actually, leaving the emotion and passion aside for a moment, logic, reason and an examination of the facts showed that the AFL's offer was a steaming pile of dog droppings that only a naive fool would regard as a good offer.
