Smith's kick

The guy sprinted 200 meters in the dying seconds to put himself in a position to mark it.. Such a professional outfit that we are, a stinging loss could do alot more for this group rather than a narrow win and another week off.

On the flip side, luckily Breust was able to recover from his smothered kick and still find a target otherwise I'm sure he would have been crucified on here!

In Game 6 of the 1997 NBA Finals, Chicago trailed by one point with just seconds left on the clock. They had time for one last shot: a score, and the Bulls win their second straight championship 4-2; a miss, and they have to travel to Utah to face the Jazz in a decisive Game 7.

During the final timeout, coach Phil Jackson drew up a play for MJ to take the final shot. He turned to his gym-rat, brilliant shooting guard Steve Kerr and asked what he thought about the play.

Kerr's immortal response: "Michael Jordan has missed 9,000 shots, lost 300 games..."

The huddle died laughing, and at the final buzzer, it was Steve Kerr who nailed the Championship clinching jumper.

In other words, Smithy should have dished off quickly to Poppy for the three.

Not pissed he missed

I'm pissed that fewer and fewer footballers can actually kick a set shot, and that kicking in a straight line over the mark doesn't mean running in a straight line

I'm not having a go at Smith, my comment is a general one, but I do agree with your comment. It just amazes me in a so-called professional sport, played by so-called professional players, that very few players these days have the slightest idea how to kick for goal from set shots.

There is so much kick and hope these days as players wander all over the place, drop the ball poorly, kick across the body, and hope like hell it goes straight. Just ridiculous.

Very costly miss in regards to us winning a 4th straight premiership regardless of wether people like to admit it or not.

We just don't know do we? It may actually help us win the flag. Had we beaten west coast in the 2015QF we may not have three-peated. Either way we can't dwell on it. We're now in a SF with the dogs. Win that and we're in a PF just like the cats.

Not a whinge, but is there a rule for players standing the mark after play has ended? Mustve been 4-5 players jumping round near the mark, and I would've thought an umpire would move some clear if it was regular time so to speak. Even more so given some very ticky touchwood frees due to players getting close to the mark/exclusion zone recently.
Would've been a very brave ump to make any call at that stage.

absolutely I was so pissed off at the time......but in cooler times.. anyone even Hodgey can miss

true. But I reakon if Hodge, Burgoyne, Gunston, Rioli or Bruest is kicking that we are preparing for a prelim.

Still I'm not blaming Smith because we should of had the game won before that. And he did bloody well to run that hard to get in that position in the first place, they had a lot of players back.

I'm still gutted seriously depressed. If we won that like we should of we are going to another GF. Can't see anyone beating GWS up there.

Again if that ball sailed through like it should have it would of been the greatest live sporting moment I have witnessed.

What a flipping shame.

I can't get it out of my head. FUUCCK.

Smithy will always be a Hawthorn legend, no matter what. He started the snowball rolling in 2013.

Absolutely right.
Back in 2013 against Freo, there was a bit of a stalemate where none of the teams could find a goal, we couldn't even get the ball deep into our respective forward lines.....then steps in Isaac Smith.....after marking a little dinky 15 meter pass outside 50! And slots it through...out of nowhere.....and that put the nail in Freo's coffin to win our premiership!

Izzy will absolutely kill'em on Friday.....no doubt!

You wonder how Smith is going. I have "what if" moments over and over thinking about it

Breust not likely from that range. Kicked his clutch goal end of the third.
Rioli from where Smith was or Burgoyne probably, Hodge maybe.
Smith was the one who got free and gave us a chance to win, what ifs are a waste of time

Absolutely they're a waste of time - but I can't help it. Anyway. Best goddamn game of footy for ages

Luke 'Clutch' Breust? lol.

He can kick some rippers at times, but when the game is on the line I'd rather have Shiels lining up for goal. Case in point, Breust had a chance in the last quarter to nail the game. I expected him to miss. I was not let down.

Smith should have kicked it but he isn't solely to blame. Plenty of other opportunities missed throughout the night, silly frees, 50's, turnovers etc. As a group the players take collective blame.

Coulda. Shoulda. Woulda. It's history. Learn from mistakes, improve and turn up ready to pounce on the puppies.
This 5000%. Burgoyne and Gunner have had rough times on the set shots in recent weeks. Hodge's 50m penalty was dumb.

Rise together, sink together.

All weekend , everytime I look across the road and see 2 trees or poles a few meters apart..stop and think..could I kick a footy through there !!..probably not now..
but hope smithy moves on quickly. he has been a champion for us and remains so vital.

True but his kick from the boundary at the end of the third when cats had all the momentum was still a clutch kick, without him we wouldn't have been close enough for Smith to almost win it, let alone had the ball in Smiths hands for that shot so he's not all bad

I don't think he's bad at all. In fact, I think I must be one of only four remaining posters on this board who hasn't proposed putting Punky forward as trade bait. :p

His kick from the boundary was the hardest kick for the night, and the highest skilled goal. Loved it. BUT... put him 30m out directly in front of goal late in the last quarter with the game on the line... let's just say he'd make Isaac's shot look good.

Most likely yes

In the end. yes smith missed. yes we are disappointed. yes he will be very disappointed. but we shouldn't have put ourself in that position.
win as a team and lose as a team.
onto next week. Lets get the w.
Its not like we haven't done it before.

Lol, but what would I know, I'm just a running winger who can't kick straight. o_O
Just shitty with him that he passed it to you aren't ya

Running in a straightish line is a fundamental in kicking the ball straight, think of Buddy and Thomas on the weekend, in fact their whole careers.
Huddo on open mike also gave great insight saying today's players with a shot at goal "don't believe".
