Very costly miss in regards to us winning a 4th straight premiership regardless of wether people like to admit it or not.

But then it could have happened at any moment during the three straight premierships, especially in the prelims, and that never happens.

Need to take the good with the bad

It wasn't any other moment during the game.
Might as well say "we would've won if you blew the siren when we were in the lead".

sorry for the intrusion and hopefully this comment doesn't annoy anyone but I genuinely feel sorry for Smith. If it's true that it was Mitchell distracting him and saying "just relax and enjoy it" or whatever I would be ropable with him if I were Smith. One time when Mitchell should have held his tongue I reckon.

Funny when it matters is what this club has done the last three years

Disappointed he missed but not disappointed with him. He played a good game.

More disappointed with Hodge costing us a goal by giving away a stupid 50m penalty. And with the umpire who called play on when Rioli got a 2 handed push square in the back in the last quarter.

I'm fairly convinced another week off would have been just as bad, if not worse for our chances as having to play an extra game and an away PF.

Thats not a distraction, its good advice from a champion.

I agree Crypt. Although i think it was a soft 50 against Hodge, pretty sure the Umpires were trying to keep control at the time.

Breust could have received a 50 when Enright ran thru the zone too. They were calling those earlier in the year. Would have been delicious meltdowns and #freekickhawthorns then!

Exactly.
& Not by making excuses.
I have no issue with posters on this board wanting to discuss the kick, I think blaming Smith for the loss is a poor attitude and ignores the 120 minutes that went before to focus on one event, just like the media and opposition supporters do when they bring up a free kick from earlier as the reason a team won or lost.

You do seem to like ragging on the Hawks, the supporters on here and the young kids in the team though more than anything else

He certainly rushed the kick. Especially when he was tired from running down the other end to take the mark. Just didn't handle the moment very well.
Unfortunately it will stick with him his whole career and oppo won't let him forget.

I haven't done anything of the sort.
I'm not interested in blaming anybody and haven't "ragged" on the Hawks, least of all the young players.

It's a kick he should have nailed and we'd best be served by analysing why he didn't just miss, but missed horribly.
Pressure? Technique? Fatigue? Routine?

so comparing burton to muston and saying muston was better was just what constructive criticism?

I didn't say Muston was better.

which when questioned on you then went with
Muston: 13 games, 8 goals, 15 possessions per game.
Burton:3 games, 1 goal, 11 possessions per game.

followed by this as backing up that Burton was on the same career path as Muston
Muston wasn't anybody's idea of an inside midfielder.
He debuted sweeping behind the ball and had one of the most prolific debuts ever.
His form then dropped in the subsequent two games and stayed around the mark. This is where Burton finds himself now - playing defensive side of the ball.
Recovered from an injury, playing behind the ball and showing glimpses.
He has yet to prove himself beyond the level Muston had.

Hardly a controversial statement.

and you didn't like the way posters were defending Smith
Too many people making excuses for Smith.
We're not Footscray or St Kilda.

so pretty sure what I said earlier is backed up by your own posts

It's hardly even worth discussing at all. What's there to say other than it was just unfortunate that he missed?

There's no point reading anything more into it. The only reason it's noteworthy is because it was a rare situation of a deciding shot at goal after the siren in a big final. If his shot had occurred 5 minutes prior it might get a small mention and if it occurred in the middle of the second quarter it wouldn't even get a mention. Nobody would question his smile nor question whether the occasion got to him. His goal in the 2013 GF from a more difficult spot under trying conditions was arguably high pressure and he nailed it.

And he didn't "miss horribly". It was a long distance shot from a deceptively difficult angle. Gunston and Breust are the best set shots in our team and they've both missed set shots from easier spots by similar margins this year. We didn't have threads analysing them. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Just wasn't our night - nothing more to it.

This is the wrong thread to be discussing the Burton comments - but you're wrong.

Yes, too many excuses about Smith missing.

You and I have different standards.
He kicked it from 45m on a slight angle, perhaps 20 degrees off a direct shot. Low difficulty.
The ball went through the middle of the behind zone.

I don't mind that he smiled.

LOL "Different standards". Spare me that shit. That's his FIRST EVER miss from a set shot in a finals game. He's stood up in finals many times over the years and it just so happened that this time it didn't fall his way. If your "standards" accept nothing but absolute perfection every time then following footy obviously isn't for you. The best players who have ever played the game have missed set shots at goal in finals too.
