So who is the most underrated player in the AFL?

I think a good portion of Hawks fans would rate Sammy above Hodge and Cyril - I do, in the grand scheme of things. There was even some talk when Hodge was down in 2012 that Sammy should have stayed captain.

Fair enough. And just for the record, both Mitchell and Hodge are are among my most favourite players.

I thought there might be a dissenting voice.

I don't want anything - don't care if he does/ doesn't get the plaudits he deserves. I was merely stating an opinion: I think he's underrated - still.

I get the feeling he never gets the extra drool factor that other star midfielders get - mainly because he's not fast. I think you have to be a Hawks fan to really get it - this guy is not just a good player, but an absolute superstar. I'm thinking he'll go down as a legend of the Hawthorn Football Club. The guy never has a bad year. He's rarely out of the side. Does his job week-in and week-out. He consistently does freakish things with his feet (both sides), and sometimes does pin-point handballs that travel 30 metres. He's not fast on his feet, but he's like lightning in his decision-making. And he is an absolute footy brain. The guy is a think-tank. And he's tough as hell.

The Richmond game marks his 250 with the club - time to knock them over again.

Fair enough. I always thought of someone underrated as someone who didn't get anywhere near the attention or respect they should based on the way they play. I'd say Mitchel gets rated very highly by most and for Hawks fans no doubt he will go down as a legend of the game. Not sure that means he is underrated?

I do get what you are saying though, Simon Black would be that to the Lions fans.

Jackson Trengove. Has Fletcher type arms and height. Had an injury during last season but came back and was huge in the finals. Looking rock solid again so far this year after an injury blip late in the preseason.

Stratton has had two incredible performances in two preliminary finals for us. Probably the most likely guy on our team to get a game saving tackle. But you won't hear a whisper about him.

As someone else said first, David Hale. Work rate is first class all day long, and he'll step up when the game is on the line. Get his head in there and take a hit for the team, which didn't match up with my opinion of him when we got him.

The Frost boys, Sam(GWS) and Jack(Magpies) are holding there own very well at senior level and look to have bright futures ahead of them. Jack is still on the rookie list(100% going to be upgraded in the coming draft), didnt leak any goals in a 70 point loss to Freo when he played on various opponents such as Pav and Mayne, has blanketed Lance Franklin, also did as good anyone could have in a miss-match against a monster who received elite passes inside 50 and who weighed 15+kgs more than them(Hawkins), he also beat Jack Riewoldt who ended up kicking 2 cheapies when the game was well and truly over and 1 of those was a rubbish free kick and the other one when Frost wasnt his direct man(Frost on the bench). From the top of my head, thats 4 Coleman medals and 4 runner up Coleman medalists in the first four weeks of the year with a direct goals against tally of 6 in 4 games, which is a great result.
Sam Frost hasnt had the same quality direct opposition, but has still played a fantastic brand of football and has impressed me as a full back but had abit of an iffy game against the dogs(apperently conced 3 goals to Jones, i missed the game) which is expected from a very young backman. Would love for Collingwood to trade in Sam and be able to play both Frost boys in the same defense for years to come.
I think these boys are pretty underrated.

Unpopular opinion but Jack Riewoldt.

The hatred he cops from non-Richmond supporters means his ability will never be appreciated. Dual Coleman medalist and one of the most consistent goal kickers in the league. Also very unselfish. He's finished top 20 in the AFL the last three years in a row for goal assists, and finished 1st for the H&A season (3rd after finals)

Goals since 2010:
282 Franklin
271 Riewoldt
236 Cloke

Nobody else is over 200. Yet he regularly gets called a liability and even a "cancer".

I think that Kade Simpson is underrated a fair bit. Others I would say Zac Dawson, Joel Patfull, David Hale and lastly David Mundy who is severely underrated with the main focus's being Barlow and Fyfe over in Freo but I think Mundy is just as good as them.
Doubtful. He's about the only Carlton player that doesn't get called a spud on here.

Thats weird. The age and final siren has him listed getting 11 touches.

It's not weird at all. You're clearly looking at the game on the weekend (where Guthrie wasn't even playing in the same part of the ground as Hill, let alone directly on him) and I was clearly referring to the previous game before this weekend that Geelong played against West Coast (Round 21 last year), when Guthrie was Hill's direct opponent.

Jay Schulz has been a gun for a while now. Would take him over Other higher profiled forwards such as cloke or riewoldt any day of the week. Just consistently gets the job done. Takes a nice mark, too.

Matt Rosa from our side is pretty underrated, I think. Has fixed a lot of deficiencies in his game and has gone from being the whipping boy to a respected footballer amongst us eagles fans. Not many do that, to be perfectly honest. Tough as nails, and runs all day. I would have said Mackenzie, but he is getting much more plaudits now.
