So who is the most underrated player in the AFL?

+1 to MacKenzie, at worst in the top 3 key defenders in the comp IMO.

Agree with Hibberd too, also a huge fan of Stratton; I think he's close to the best medium sized defender atm.

I don't think we have too many candidates these days, our players have been well rated for the last couple of seasons and even role players like Clancee Pearce/Spurr/Mzungu etc get their due, more or less.

Mzungo. Yes. Really annoys me that commentators continually say his name wrong - even worse when there is 2-3 different pronunciations within a single commentary team

Very hard to say who is the most underrated in the AFL - especially when I don't watch many games of other teams (try to watch West Coast when I can). As said before guys like MacKenzie and a lot of KPD's in general don't get anywhere near enough the recognition they deserve. Darling probably doesn't get enough credit - he got a lot of praise this week after his display in the derby, however. His work-rate and second/third/fourth efforts are great to watch and while I believe he his held in high regard as an out-and-out forward, it's his other efforts that often go unnoticed - reminds me a lot of Chris Mayne. Guys like that often go unnoticed when not kicking goals, as they do all the hard yards only for a small forward to scoop up the ball and get the goal (LeCras is missed big time at WC)

Unfortunately was mentioned a lot with milne which may have had an impact

Off field discretions don't really impact Swan's, Wayne Carey etc perceived output. Get what you are saying though. Look at his stats this year and he continues to perform, either way don't mind as it means noone is picking him up in supercoach and ive got a great POD :thumbsu:

I reckon its currently Cam Sutcliffe. Who? I hear you all say.
Exactly. Playing his 3rd year of AFL and he's entrenched in the Freo back 6. Runs all day, racks it up as well as shutting his man down and has a precise penetrating kick.
And the commentators to my knowledge have never mentioned him other than to call his name when he has the ball.
No one ever says, my god this guy was picked at like 73 in the draft and here is playing really good footy in a top 8 team.
He is practically invisible as far as the media goes.
Thats underrated, not someone like bloody Beams who probably has his own column in the Hun and goes on the Footy Show every few weeks.

Jordan Lewis is an underrated footballer, judging by all the opposition fans I hear shouting, "You're a hack, Lewis!" He isn't one of those super-duper elite A-grade superstars, but he's been getting the job done for the past decade. Not sure why rival fans hate on him. He's not a dirty player, just hard and tough and more skilful than people give him credit for.

Behind Trav Cloke, he's the 2nd footballer from the 2004 draft to reach 200 games

Nice article in The Age on Friday:

Do you really want to know why opposition fans hate on him?

I think it's because he often ducks or throws his head back playing for free kicks
Lewis has always gotten a shocking run from the umpires. He's better off just playing footy and letting others play for free kicks.
I've seen him duck his head into tackles a few times and the umpires just wave play on. He's terrible at it. Quite comical really. He reminds me of Brendon Fevola whenever he tries to play for a free. Clownish and way over the top. He fools nobody.

tries to put on a tough guy persona
Lewis doesn't try to put on a tough guy persona. He is a tough guy. I hear people yelling that stuff out at Hawthorn games ("You're a pretend tough guy, Lewis!!") and it always amuses me. If Lewis doesn't qualify as one of the AFL's tough guys, then who does? I don't mean he's some MMA street fighter hero who'll kick everyone's arse. I just mean he is a hard-headed guy who isn't afraid of copping the knocks. He was like that from his very first game. I don't understand how Lewis can play like he has for 9 years and have people question his toughness. Do people even watch the game?

He also seems like a bit of a douche in his post game interviews, but you could probably say that about a lot of footballers.
He seems alright to me. Friendly, down-to-earth. The people who know him say he's a great guy. I've never heard anything otherwise.

I don't have a mancrush on Lewis. I just never really understood why he is the target of rival fans' abuse. I like all the tough, old-school footballers from other clubs. People seem to get really annoyed by him as though he's a sniper, or a thug, or a cheating tagger, or an umpire's pet, or a big-headed prima donna, or an overpaid mercenary, or someone who mouths off, or squibby arsey goal sneak…

Except he's none of these things. Weird.

Yeah his acting is pretty poor - at least he owned up to it with the Goddard shove earlier this season. It sort of undermines his status as a tough guy. I don't think he's a sniper or thug or dirty player at all, just a bit of a loud mouth who's slightly up himself. The story about him making a fat joke then getting decked by Mumford in the US comes to mind.

Yeah, I read that too about him and Mumford in America, supposedly some line about his weight, but nobody knows exactly what was said or the context it was said. Sounded to me like a couple of footballers were full of piss and it turns out one of them was a psycho. Total dick move to punch out a guy over a "fat joke". Wasn't Mumford the guy who was famous for eating 100 sausages in one sitting?

Nathan Jones is underrated at the demons, he's a very good player, but just doesn't receive much credit because of the way his team have coped over the last few years. He's a hard-nut that gets a lot of the ball. If melbourne were higher up on the ladder, jones would be much more popular. Jay Shultz is also quite underrated, he's a lethal forward.

Thread needs more Josh Kennedy(Sydney). I know most would rate him top 20 in the game but IMO he's top 5. His stats this year:

Average over 8 games:
30.7 Disposals (2nd best in league behind Ablett)
17.5 Contested Posessions (2nd best behind Ablett)
5.9 Tackles (27th Best)
6.5 Clearances (10th Best. He's #1 in handballs so clearances are down)

Has 20+ contested possessions in a game more than any other player in history.
Stands up against the big teams: Only 22 disposals vs GWS whereas he averaged 34 disposals/7 tackles against Hawthorn/Collingwood/Freo.
He's played every single game for the Swans for the last 4½ years: 106 games without injury/rest/suspension which is incredible for such a heavy ball winner.

I don't think he has been mentioned in this thread...but there is a player who:
  • is a dual All Australian midfielder
  • 4 x B&F winner
  • Premiership player
  • Best player in a side that made the GF
  • Approaching 300 games (including more than 170 consecutive at one point)
  • Best player in his role at various points
  • About to replace Mark Ricciuto in the top 20 ball winners of all time.
Anyone know?? Sounds like a superstar right? It's not my love child Sam MItchell (also underatted)...it's actually Kane Cornes!

I know he has limitations but he is NEVER spoken about, even when discussing 'good' or 'decent' midfielders. Now read over the above again...he has had a fine career and deserves more recognition/respect than he seems to get. I mean, he was the best tagger in the league at various stages (always top two) and will still be in the top 20 possession getters of all time himself.

Guys like Matt Rosa and Sam Gibson are very underrated. Rosa averaging 26 disposals this year and Gibson 26.3. Get plenty of the ball most weeks and do a very handy job for their team yet aren't given much of a mention.
