I have to laugh at the uproar this morning about channel nines coverage of the Itlay soccer game. They showed the first half, went to the news for half an hour at six o'clock and showed the second half as a a delayed telecast.
Such an uproar of an event that is just the norm for AFL supporters in WA.

Obviously you guys are not soccer fans.
Firstly, Frodo. If that happened in Europe or South America, the studio would have been burned down before the 2nd half started :p So this 'uproar' really isn't much considering two european teams were playing.

Secondly, Mr Eagle. You cannot appreciate the finer points of soccer unless you have played the game. Go to an NSL game one day and you will see why soccer is so big. And the NSL has amateur skills compared to these world class teams. To us WOGS, 90mins of soccer just isn't enough, thank goodness we can see 4 matches a day :D

a) I did play soccer as a junior. Suffice it to say that this was a short-term interest only :)

b) There is a world of difference between the enjoyment and physical benefit of playing a sport, and the entertainment value of it as a spectacle. I have watched several World Cup games in the company of friends, and the only interesting ones have been the 4-0 and 8-0 results :D

What staggers me is how England can go into party mode and consider themselves superior to Argentina when they won because Argentina committed a foul! I love the soccer terminology that you can "win" a penalty as if "getting tripped by your opponent" is a skill that you can develop over the years...

Correct D4E and I will add that the passion at any AFL game is nothing in comparison with most European and South American games. I love WCE and like last night the atmosphere was great at the end BUT there is more atmosphere at a UK soccer game with less than 20,000 spectators.
There is also a huge local rivalry that can't be understood here in Australia. Man Utd ve Man City. Arsenal v Chelsea. Liverpool Everton. Villa v Birmingham. None would have a good word to say about the local opposition........total venom and hatred exists.
An AFL opponent gets hurt and everone goes ..ooohh and applauds him off the ground with a blooded nose. In Europe he goes off to a few thousand fans singing 'bring on the dustbin'. And as for not criticising umpires in AFL. A common song by thousands at a game goes 'Who's yer father, whos yer father, whos yer father referee, you anit got one, you aint lost one, yer a B@$#**** referee'

(ps From a POME, yer a WOP mate not a WOG ;) )

True, but it does help you to realise what skill those guys actually possess when you have failed attempting much simpler moves.

Its a common theme for people who don't follow soccer to say "soccer is crap, they only score 1-2 goals a game" because they're used to the 15 goals scored by each team in AFL games. But those goal feasts you enjoyed were actually pretty crap in terms of entertainment, the Belgium-Japan (2-2) and S.Africa - Paraguay (2-2) games were very entertaining. And they were draws. So goals arent everything in soccer.

How dare you not mention Spurs (The Good) versus Arsenal (Evil)?

In fact after I've finished posting, "You're gonna get your ferking head kicked in!"

(Not to mention Sunderland v Newcastle and the biggest of them all Celtic v. Rangers).

I reckon the Subi atmosphere is pretty damn good now - I'm training my section of the 3 tier stand well.

Soccer is great but only when seeing the highlights show every monday for the English Premier League and of course when the World Cup comes around.

Soccer can get boring when its a stalemate game...0-0 draws can be boring as hell. But i enjoy watching the EPL and the World Cup is great, moreso because its a huge world event rather than the actual soccer...its like the Olympics.

Now what's that song every teams supporters sing?.......mmm...always starts

" We hate Nottingham Forest, We hate Tottenham too...and Arsenal...........we hate Leeds United but XXXXXXXX we love you " :D (to the tune of land of hope and glory)

Now how about getting the 3 tier stand singing the same tune to :-

" We hate Essendon Bombers, We hate Kangaroos too..and Bulldogs...........we hate Freo Frockers but West Coast we love you, all togeter now" :D
I shall be listening at the next home game :D

Trouble is - that's to the tune of Land of Hope and Glory aka the national anthem of the Auld Country - we need to do something to the Australian National Anthem.

I'll go away and work on that, but in the meantime:

"Waltzing Matera, Waltzing Matera
Who'll come a waltzing Matera with me?"

How about instead of "Glenn Hoddles Blue and White Army"

"John Worsfolds Blue and Gold Army!"

Always love hearing that chant at Spurs games

How many armies does the Eagles need? That'd be two.

Look I apologise for harping on about this but when it was looking like we were going down in the final quarter and my brother and I were shouting ourselves hoarse, from what I could see through the glasses the passionate little band in red were sitting there like stunned mullets. Maybe they were shouting - someone nearer can fill me in on this - but if they're not going to try and gee the crowd up when the crowd is quiet, seriously, what's the bloody point?

My last post on the Red Army, I promise.

But if they are really considering dropping the vomit from their list of jumpers, they should not need a red army?

Yes?
