The other thread on the 02 grand final got me thinking, and just wondering what everyone else thinks as well in regards to the following question:

Which grand final loss hurt more? 02 or 03?

2002. By a lot.

Both pain in different ways. But for sheer hurt, you can't go past 2002. It was so close yet so far.

2002 I was heartbroken bur proud, 2003 I was just p*ssed off and bitterly disappointed.

At the time i think 02 definitly hurt more. They built us up thinking we had a chance, and ripped our hearts out when the final siren went.

03 on the other hand they just inflicted the pain over 2 hours.

In hindsight you look back and you're disgusted by 03, because that is the one we couldve/shouldve won. We were primed before that. 02 we were never expected to get close.

Clearly 03.
02 hurt "us" the supporters, because the score was so close, however 03 hurt "us" the club more because we went in a favourites (which was the first 'mistake', since Rocca had been suspended) and were not only beaten to a pulp, but had sand kicked in our face, and rubbed into our wounds for the next week.
I'd say (off the top of my head) a dozen players in that game haven't been the same since.
From a players point of view, the 02 loss made them more hungry, the 03 loss made them scared little girls.

2003 definitley.

In 02 it was hope. We lost but I was still proud at our huge effort.
In 03 it was expectation. We lost and I was disgusted at our poor effort.

My vote's for 1979. Closely followed by 1970, 1966, 1977, 1964, 2003, 1981, and 2002. Distant last is 1980. We never had a chance in that game.

2003. Far more disappointing, because we got blown out of the water.

Our efforts in the 2002 GF were excellent, but it's a shame that we had to come up against the Brisbane Lions. Any other club and we would have won probably.

I think you could say the same about '03; we were the equal or better of anybody that year - except the Lions, who we've always struggled against.

In '03 we went into the game as favourites, which I had a hard time digesting. We had a poor record against the Lions (despite knocking them off in the Qualifying Final by 10 points or so, from memory they gave us a flogging at the MCG in about Round 19). And, of course, we didn't have Rocca...

I think on balance 2003 hurt more, but not by much.

2002 ripped my heart out AND gutted me.. it hurt more but onyl because we lost by just that inch..

2003 hurt also but it was over at quarter time.. the fact we come in favourites ********ed my mind over that day that we lost by that much

I didn't feel a thing in 2003. Got smashed after half time!
I agree, after half-time for the first time i was just switching between channels during a Collingwood match, '02 was more painful, not because we got so close, but because the umpiring didn't go our way. I remember hearing the commentators comment about Collingwood's tackling Collingwood's tackling Collingwood's tackling, non stop, its hard to say who deserved it more in '02 but I saw 1-2 Collingwood players show some of that '90 spirit, that fight that i've never seen as a Collingwood supporter. '03 was just disappointing because skills weren't anywhere near as good as '02 and the funny thing is '03 was dry and '02 was wet.
