Calling people of colour apes has been used to justify murder, turture and slavery. Look up King Leopold and what his regime was up to.

Ape has never been used to justify the murder of white people.
So you think education is key and not calling people racist is the way to go? I agree.

But what adds to the confusion is you say people of colour like people are supposed to know your genetic background. For example, I'm a racist if I called Scott Boland or Jason Gillespie an ape years ago.

Is silverback okay? If Dunstall tells us he is indigenous, does that make us racist?

Any idea when AFL will make their announcement? Seems like an awfully long time considering media handed out their punishment Sunday.

I was thinking the same thing. I reckon we’re in deep negotiations about punishment or some fixed alternatives. I just hope Balme and Olsen can sway their decisions. Losing finals games competing for a flag is not the same as regular home and away games. If this happened early or mid year we might’ve taken the L and moved on.

Just to add people in the AFL such as McGuire, Lloyd, Hardwick and Matthew’s have come out and pretty much saying the term people are suggesting isn’t justified

He did. He did exactly what you're asking for.

There isn't a history of white Europeans being dehumanised by being referred to as apes, so that part is irrelevant.
So there are levels of vilification now? An Italian being called a dago or a Greek being called a wog back in the day doesn't rank.

And PS look how they handled it.

All vilification is bad, but that doesn't mean it's all equal. Some causes more harm than others.

Calling a person of white European descent an ape is not vilification because there is no history of white Europeans being dehumanised in that manner.

There are still people out there who believe indigenous Australians come from a different evolutionary lineage than Europeans. That they are less human than people of European descent. This is the context that makes calling an indigenous person an ape so dehumanising.

Ok, you need to educate yourself. But hey, maybe that's just Gen X me talking. My lived experience counts for nothing right?

But only your lived experiences though, right? People whose lived experiences have led them to different conclusions? Those don't count.

The longer it goes the more I believe leniency might be on the Cards. However I am also a lifelong Crows fan, so leniency is a exceptionally foreign concept to get my head around.

it does take a special kind of disintelligence to present PC as a good thing. the clue is in the name.

Very different to behaving with repsect, kindness and empathy because it is the right thing to do.

If basic decency feels like “political correctness” to you, maybe the problem isn’t the culture - it’s your behaviour.

“Political correctness” is just what some people call it when they’re asked to stop being jerks in public.

I don't think you understood his post.

Didn’t Rankine call Nick a Fa***t and he’s not?

"Ape" is not a slur. It only becomes offensive in a certain context.

The same is not true of what Rankine said.
Of course it is when said to a human.

If it is said in order to dehumanise someone, sure.

In a vacuum, if someone called me an ape I would assume they were referring to me being big, solid and kind of dense, unless they added additional context to make me think they were trying to dehumanise me.

But a person from an ethnic group which has been historically compared to monkeys in order to dehumanise them? Different story.

He's also not very smart and doesn't exactly have a great way with words. We sent out Fog and Tex this week. Not great from the club and could have gone badly.
ANB would have been good.
He spoke very well today, actually listen to it before judging. Fog also handled his presser yesterday as well as anyone could.

Prior to the last match, I hapopened to have a look at the match-day thread on the Collingwood Board.
It was largely polite, but there was a consistent theme that we are regarded as "whingers".

Well, after this match, I think they've won the whinging championship, and extended to the dobbing championship.

Yeah, and I appreciate it. Tex always wears his heart on his sleeve.

But Fogarty and Dawson showed the correct way to handle questions like this. Basically just say "I'm not going to get into that" to everything.
I thought Tex handled the interview very well and it gave a bit more insight into Rankine's mental state too, which I think is important for people to understand.

And might be part of why it's taking so long.
Cant remember who it was, but someone in the media said Rankine 'wouldn't be able to live with himself'. If that's a possible outcome then this needs to be treated very carefully
