That is quite a "injured / left overs" team.

Hayes will be back once fit, no doubt about that. Based on the performance today, I would expect Gwilt, Eddy or Armitage (yes, Armitage - I'm not sure about this game time, but I saw that Blake - and Riewoldt, of course - ran almost 6 km more than he did) to make room for him. I would keep McQualter (even though, according to the official AFL / St Kilda site, he apparently didn't play...) who stayed in there all night and finally got the better of Boomer Harvey in the fourth quarter.

Michael Gardiner played very well before his latest injury. On the other hand, Koschitzke contributed in the ruck today and Blake can ruck, too. Gardiner is generally a good goalkicker (88 goals in 137 games), but has only one goal to his name for St Kilda. Should be in.

Baker, X Clarke and Schneider will always be a threat for those currently in the 22. I still consider it a bit harsh for Birss to have been dropped in the first place and Rix is simply dominating Casey with several BOG performances in a row. Geary, Leigh Fisher, Raph Clarke, Fiora can all play, but will need to prove themselves to get a chance. Ferguson and McEvoy both deserve another chance and Attard should be available soon and then there is always Fraser Gehrig (who is still our 5th best goal kicker this season...) !

Good to finally see some depth and also some internal pressure and competition. I would expect Charlie Gardiner (No. 1 candidate for me for an 'out' in two weeks), Gwilt (quiet today), Armitage (see above), Allen (yes, he tried, but there were no real results) and Eddy (not as good as last week and little pressure - but for me least likely to be dropped of my list in this paragraph) to not be too confident.

Armo had 47% gametime. Roo was 100 and Im sure Blake was high 90's as well.

Btw, I worked out that Armo ran furthur per minute whilst he was on the ground then Roo. ;)

Actually, how did Roo have 100%? TSFS just said he started on the bench lol.

Easy to get em mixed up. ;)

you know what last week I was watching Gilbo & I reckon I got him mixed up with Roo on a few occasions

i think im as picky on players than anyone, but i think gwilt hasnt been to bad.. what does everyone else think?? i think we have had worse players of late..

I reckon that for what we picked Gwilty up for he's been doing ok. Has shown a bit but he won't be a miracle answer to some of our problems. Been going ok though. Have been impressed.

I don't think he is too bad. My only critisism ( that I noticed) against the Roos was a long boot to nobody. Other than that he is a bit slow to get to the ball sometimes.

Just on our depth, I think our KP backs are a glaring weakness depth-wise. Up front we have good back up talls in Gehrig, Allen, McEvoy, Charlie Gardiner, Ferguson. Mids and small forwards we have plenty of blokes we can rotate through and some decent non-best 22 options. We even have a good ruck department finally!

But KP back options are limited. What happens if say Max retires, and Goose can't recover properly next year? We'll be left without a single actual KP back. We Sam Fisher and Gilbert (who play much better elsewhere), Blake (who is good at shutting down non-star opponents, but shithouse at everything else), Dempster (wouldn't back him to beat a half decent key forward)..... and Rix maybe? Gwilt? Ferguson? Raph? Any way you look at it, a couple of injuries and we are completely rooted down back. Next year a KP back, along with a lightning mid of course, must be priority with our first two picks and we should look at picking Silvagni up in the PSD/Rookie draft.

Yes, I cant see a replacement for Max in our current list.

Not his role brother. He plays on the small forwards.

I disagree. He's a solid lead up player and he hits packs hard. Excellent stuff when he sent three Roos defenders to the turf. I'd have him in the team instead of before Charlie Gardiner.

My jury is still out on Allen. Takes an impressive pack mark. Would prob want to see him get some extra time in the 1sts.

Keep in mind, very tough for a forward to get a touch with slow moving ball. Let's see how he goes when it's coming in hard and fast (as last night he got more of the ball as the game went on).

yes agreed. I'd also like an understanding with the blokes running forward with the ball to put it into key areas where our forwards shod be able to get to, to mark & kick for goal or move the ball further forward.

Yeah true. Sometimes though the kick needs to dictate where to go. Be interesting how the forwards set up with the added space of the G compared to the Dome.

Although it's been posed generally a few times since the start of the year, how do we really gauge how Barker is going as a forward coach? Although we can't hold him accountable for all skill aspects of our forward line, at what stage do we fairly assess how our forward coach is traveling?

Good too see Sam F drift up-field. It has been a long time coming. Chucky had a shocker.

If you look at Allen's stats they were poor, but this bloke is quite clever. The sealing goal by Milne was actually a direct palm out, and his bullocking work was just what we needed (get the ball to ground).

I read HMC's comments on another thread (during the game) and totally agreed. We had zero struture at times and Gwilt kicked one straight down the throat of two North players on their own at CHF (mind you he wasn't under much pressure). At least Allen (when he was on the ground) stayed at home and presented.

Kosi got absolutely thrashed in the ruck, but got some touches around the ground. He still thinks he is Chris Judd and put in a couple of awful short passes.

I am looking forward to the return of Michael Gardiner who is sorely missed.

Gwilt does tend to play hot potato with the ball when he gets it. I seem to recall some of the others doing it to (but I cannot remember who ).
As soon as they get the ball they get rid of it either by handballing to someone who is in less space then they are, or booting it long.
I think Eddy did a couple of long kicks to the Roos in Q1, and RH even had a go at handballing it to them later on.

Difficult to grade him because we don't know exactly what he has them working on or what his instructions are. I guess the forward coach is affected by the coach himself. For example Gilbo played up forward against the Dockers and down back against the Roos, difficult for a forward coach to do his job when players are moved all over the shop, but then again if a general structure and plan are being adhered to, this shouldn't be a bad thing. I don't mean to defend Barker by any means but I guess it would be good to know what he is trying to work towards before sticking the boots in.
