I remember that kick well, it was one of only two games I got to that year and I was dead set behind the kick as he lined up ... what a moment.

I was going through some old tapes the other day (wife insisting I throw the ones I don't want out) and saw a couple of games as late as 2006 when he was starting to feel the effects of those crapiola knees. He was still a gun player even then and would have been an A grader KPP player if still running around for us now ... and man could we do with one of those. Feel very sorry for him personally too. Anybody heard from him post 2007 when he was forced out of the team? Is he still involved somehow? Has he moved on to bigger and better things? What's up with the JLo?

Kangaroos was almost as bad. In front at 3 quarter time, they kick 5.3 to our 1.2 in the last quarter.

You must have been somewhere near my seat PapaJ, because I was right behind JLo in line with the goals. Its a pity he didn't run back along the same line for the crowd hug instead of diving in a few sections along. Still, it would be an awesome memory for those in amongst it.

Cuddles got out coached, when the rain came the Demons moved their defenders forward and turned the game into a half and if we got a kick out it went nowhere.

When Mcpharlin ran down the guy that was the biggest roar i've heard from a crowd ever, it was unbelievable... and when he kicked it there was just absolute pandemonium.

correct he was working with Bell until the deal went pearshaped. They are very good mates off the field.

Longmuir was one of the new breed of ruckman that could move around the field like a midfielder and still ruck. At his peak he was extremely underrated by the East coast, he was a genuine match winner.

Should of known I'd get that reaction here.

People always remember that game for the great finish but forget what happened earlier in the game. Like I said I was at the game and saw the umpiring decisions for myself, there were an extraordinary amount of decisions that went in Freo's favour that day. Some were warranted but quite a few weren't.

I'm not one for conspiracies but the 'Whispers in the Sky' controversy was more than likely genuine. It was a member of the media, not a Saints person, that overheard the umpires comments. Of course the AFL weren't going to admit the umpires were at fault though, so nothing ever came of it.

I've got nothing against Freo by the way, after all the umpiring wasn't their fault, and I don't begrudge you guys having a great win like that. However it annoys me when people overlook some of the umpiring that went on in that game. Mind you it's not like it's the only game the umpires have influenced with poor decisions, seems to be a regular occurence these days.

I dunno gravy, it was a member of the media that said it after all. Pillars of society and all. I'm just now beginning to be convinced that it was all a conspiracy to get Thomas sacked.

It didn't disadvantage St Kilda at all, either. They went to Adelaide first week of the finals, won, had a week off, then lost the prelim. They were never going to win a premiership with Thomas at the helm, the little sooks in media he always had probably accelerated his decline, and now they have a very good chance with Lyon.

I agree though that it was probably for the best that we got rid of Thomas for Lyon. Thomas didn't do us any favours by criticising the AFL and the umpires all the time, no matter how justified it was. I don't think it's any coincidence that we seem to be getting a much better run with the umpiring under Lyon than we got under Thomas.

The game itself probably did, but the result probably didn't.

Thomas's biggest fault was his distaste for ruckmen. Now you've got a fairly decent ruck brigade, and you're midfield works much better. Not that surprising, really.

You'll find that St Kilda got just as many soft free kicks in front of goal, they just missed. I think gehrig got one near the top of the square that was completely unwarranted and completely ****ed up the shot from about 15m out. Yet McPharlin got a terrible free kick 50m out on the boundary in the last quarter and slotted it.
Hell, I remember St Kilda fans complaining about the Farmer holding the ball with a few minutes left, never mind the St Kilda player took 5 steps before being tackled. No prior opportunity? My arse......but it made them feel better when they thought the umpries were at fault.
