My understanding is that soccer pitches are not all the same size. Rugby pitches can differ significantly in the in goal area
Regardless, the practice of observing how aus football differs from european or american sports and ipso facto concluding inferiority is gold standard cultural cringe

I'd be perfectly happy if field sizes were standardized. It seems logical, and I can't think of a reason not to do it apart from "tradition".

Every time this question gets asked people bring up Rugby and Soccer and say their fields are the same size, I'm not sure about soccer, but Rugby fields aren't all the same size. They're within a set dimensions, but not necessarily the same.

Soccer fields differ. As do cricket fields FWIW.
Having differing sized fields as to the 'flavour' of the game.

Yeah, just looked up Soccer field dimensions, I thought that would be the case. My point its people keep saying "afl is so amateur not having the same sized fields" or "every other sport does" when it just isn't true.
Spotless Stadium's 2010 redevelopment, Metricon's 2010 redevelopment and the construction of Optus stadium in Perth gave the AFL the opportunity (influence developers) to create 3 stadiums with the same Oval dimension....possibly the same size as an already existing Oval.

And when/how will the remaining stadiums in the AFL catch up? You'll just end up with 3 or 4 grounds the same and the rest all different still.
Both teams have to deal with the same conditions - weather, time, field quality and size.
How would I know exactly how or when?
If I were to take an absolutey wild guess, it would be when an existing stadium gets an upgrade and standard size is feasable or when a new stadium is built. Whether that is 5 years or 25 years from now that potentially would have be up to 5 standard sized ovals. Perhaps after that a 6 or even a 7th oval of standard size.I don't expext all stadiums to get redeveloped or knocked down solely for standard sizing, however with a bit of long term planning and patience it may be possible to get all (SCG excluded) playing grounds standardized or close when the time finally comes to renovate, redevelop etc.
Probably should do the same in Cricket. Possibly drop in cement pitches so they all the same to.

I just don't get the hate for having some variety, within parameters.
It's not like some grounds are hundreds of metres longer than others, or the goals are different widths at different grounds.
It's still about the same number of kicks goal-to-goal, and within a variance of two across the other axis of the ground.
Both teams have to play on the same dimension field for the game.
Surely professional athletes and sporting organisations can adapt to these things in the same way they have to adapt to different weather, climate, altitude - also things that are the same on the day for both teams. Just as a team has to be able to play the MCG to win a flag (and knows that from the start of the season), a team has to be able to adapt to shorter/longer, wider/narrower grounds, with deeper/shallower pockets, bigger/smaller grandstands causing swirly/direct wind patterns etc.
I think the horse has bolted with regard to further standardising the playing field dimensions across the AFL, let alone the sport as a whole.

Do you realise rugby, English football and cricket are all played on different sized tracks and they are some of the oldest sports known to man ?!

And there's a bunch of grounds that are quite a bit narrower than the SCG too (Kardinia is 20m+ less across), so you'd be losing a fair whack of width too.

Same shape will do! Or maybe all crowds must be 50% support for both teams, every game played at 1 stadium, with a roof, equal free kicks, and coached by the same person? (Insert AFLX comments). Commentators could rate every player as the next big thing, the champion or why our game is great.

Don't see any valid arguments against, aside from the obvious one of logistics. And rugby and soccer pitches are basically the same shape and don't vary nearly as much. Much less affect on gameplay. I mean, realistically it ain't gonna happen anytime soon or even ever, but it seems logical for ANY pro team sport to have regulation size playing areas.
