Both seem be playing for same spot as the Clarence King in the Side who will get the Ball and get the Ball out to player and give us 1st use of the Ball.

Stanley went Higher in the draft at 21 where Beams was at 29.

Stanley would get 1st go of been at the team for 2 years and have a Bigger Body.

Those who will be the Better Player

we will find out his year what stanley is made of.. his opening is there.. if good enuf will have a spot every week - dont see it happening though...

beams.. well he is just a kid, but im really excited about this young boy - he is rated so highly by our recruiters.. should be a gem but time will tell ....

i will make a prediction though.. toovey ,cook and stanners will be gone at seasons end.. hope im wrong and they have breakout seasons... but fwiw i think - esp cook and tooves have had almost ebuf opportunities to show something - and the havent shown anything substantial.....

Id just love Stanley to be able to make, got all the attributes of a dane swan type player, and maybe like swanny will develop a few years later then expected.

But having said that, I think Beams will play more games for the pies next year, let alone in the future, and will become an out right gun in the midfield.

You have to think that because we rated Beams as a possible choice at 11, the club assumes he will develop into lockyer or obree's replacement, with mabye stanley adding depth in the future.

I just love what our midfield might look like in 2 years time now, the names roll of the tongue;

Pendlebury
Swan
Thomas
Clarke
H. Shaw
Didak
Beams
McCarthy
Sidebottom
Davis

Thats a fair dinkum 10 man rotation with some other players possibly to be included like Stanley or Cook, as well as the outsiders like Barham etc.

If we are going right now Stanley. For a number of reasons is clearly ahead. Pund for pound his a absolute bull and his attack on the ball is relentless. There is no questions about what you will get from Stanley he will attack the ball with everything his got at all times. He will out muscle guys and just pure want the ball more.

Beams is at the moment, more of a Pendleberry style wait and weave type who has terrific hands. He has the body and potential to be an awesome clearance kind inside mid but not the mind set right now.

When it comes to being an inside mid a lot of it has to do with being willing to do all the hard stuff required to win the ball and having the body to back it up and Stanners wins easily in both departments.

never been a fan of stanley
doesnt go hard enough at the ball from what ive seen at afl level
my moneys on beams
You havent see enough at stanley, imagine a pit bull going at a rabbit

with staners, do you think he has what it takes to be a better than average player?? i still think he hasnt been given a fair run - but i also think he hasnt shown a great deal at the top level and this also gets back to having a proper chance which he will/should have this season...

Surely you are thinknig of a different player. I would buy that he shows little awareness or appears slow the one massive strength in his game is he is a Scott Burns style old fashioned hard nut who is strong as an ox and willing to dive on the pill and run in straight lines

thb im not his biggest fan and i havent seen a great deal but when i have seen him he never backed away from it... it was something i thought he was excellent at it... but i guess ive only seen him on a few occaisions...

Stanley now. Easily.

Built like a tank, attacks the ball relentlessly, can kick with both feet well. His thinking always seems to be a little too slow for AFL level, which could be down to him getting used to the VFL tempo.

Certainly is ahead of Beams right now, and for a year or two i reckon.

To cut it short I think he does. For an extended answer read on.

The questions people who have only seen him at AFL level generally raise are.

His kicking is shit
His to slow
His got no awareness.

A lot of this comes from not being given a chance to adjust and being played out of position IMO. His great strength is his ability to win the ball or make a path in and around the stoppages. Only this year has he been fit enough to play a full game in the midfield. During the year his ability to get cheaper kicks around the ground in general play improved a fair bit as his fitness improved.

His actually a very good kick. He is prone to shank a few here and there but in general his a very accurate and usually reliable kick. His slow off the mark but once his going he covers the ground well. So he will have an impact around the ground. His pace of the mark is not an issue when he is in the midfield because, you want him in and under feeding it out, not on the outside breaking away.

His awareness I still believe is likely to be an issue of adapting up to the pace of AFL. His hands are lightening quick in tight at VFL level. So I don't think its a reaction thing. Time will tell.

What games have you watched - That is Stanley strongest point is his attack on the Ball and can win it in a Contest

The way I see it, Stanley and Rusty are competing for a spot in our team, the inside midfielder spot.

Beams will be the better player though. Stanley ATM

I'd love for Stannerz to make it. His VFL form this year was impressive, he might need the extra time to convert that kind of performance into the AFL ranks. Really hope he does make it though, then our midfield really is destined for good things.

IMO Stanley is not up to AFL standard- too slow, poor skills....but I would never question his commitment or his willingness to put his body on the line and get under a pack. If his pace and skills were at that level, he would be captain/coach next year.

For Stanley to make it in AFL football, MM has to play him in the guts. None of this back pocket nonsense. (e.g playing on Russell Robertson)

I agree. He deserves to be put in the middle in the pre-season games so he can play in his best position and establish himself, as well as getting used to the tempo.

There's a lot of pressure on him for this coming season and I think he will be our surprise packet and big improver in 2009.

I'd prefer to see Beams get a few games over Stanners tbh. I havn't liked what i've seen of Stanley but I havn't had the benefit of seeing him much in the VFL. I think that they'll both be struggling to hold down a place next year but both given opportunities.

Although i'm not a big fan of Stanley I think if we play him we have to do two things:

1 - Give him a four game run in the team so he has a chance to settle into the pace of the game at AFL level and settle his nerves too which I think is a big issue for him
2 - Play him in his position as a midfielder at the centre bounce. Its clear that this HBF BP bullsh!t isn't doing him any favors.

If we don't do these two things for him and he gets delisted at the end of the year i'd have a bad feeling that we made a mistake not really finding out what he is capable of.

Hope you guys are right because on the occassions I've watched him at AFL level he invariably gets mauled from behind. All the tenacious skills he appears to display at VFL level need to cross over or it's violins. I agree with the idea of getting him to play in the guts during the NAB, if obnly to know where he stands up in his specialist position.

That being said, it would appear that is the only specialty that he can add to the team. From comments he obviously can't make it as an outside mid, so he would want to get a go on the inside lickety split.

I imagine Beams might be a bit more versatile around the ground than Stanley, and I imagine faster - so my man is Beams, in the very short future.
