State of Origin Returning Next Year

Ah good to see the pre-pubescant interstatians showing blatant ignorance, while the more educated football fans are delighted with it's return, be they Victorian or otherwise. I'll be going along, no doubt there.

So if we don't care then we are ignorant?

Interesting theory. That must be why it hasn't existed, or been missed, for the past eight years.

Awesome news, although we've known it for some time ... it is good to get a formal confirmation.

What I want is details.

* Ever state should compete (NT to be included with QLD, ACT to be included with NSW) - Absolute NO to the ridiculous "Allies" concept. I lost all respect for both the concept and the AFL after that stupidity.

* When is it going to happen ? Pre-season.

* Where will the matches be held ? From what I hard from Demitrigoof all the matches would be at the MCG - that doesn't seem fair to just about every other state in the country. Too Melbourne-centric this AFL mob.

* Will a champion be decided ? (otherwise there is no point).

When I know all these things, I will have my ticket ready.

Yes, reading between the lines it almost seems like it will be one game - Vic v Everyone.
If that's the case its worse than having no origin.
It wouldn't surprise me, its a good way to kill off the lingering support for Origin while pretending to listen and give us what we've said we wanted.

Mid-Season Break - 6 teams

Rank them by Aussie-Rules support.

Traditional Footy States
-----------------------
Victoria
South Australia
Western Australia
Tasmania

Developing Footy States
-----------------------
Queensland/Northern Territory
New South Wales/ACT

Would prefer 8, but I know the ACT filled with AFL Canberra players would get creamed. If 8 is not possible, do 6, not 7 as I wouldn't want to see a side "sit out" a year. I think most people would be satisfied with 6 squads.

This is what they had available in '93, the last "carnival", althought really it was just Vic v. NSW/ACT on a Tuesday Night at the MCG, SA v WA at Footy Park on a Wednesday Night, winners played on Saturday Twilight (Vic v SA at the MCG), and Sunday you just had Tasmania v. Queensland/NT at North Hobart on its own.

Anyway, for next year, just 3 games,

Friday Night
Western Australia v Tasmania - Subiaco (Seven)

Saturday Night
Victoria v South Australia - MCG (Ten)

Sunday Afternoon
Queensland/Northern Territory v. New South Wales/ACT - Gabba (FOX)

If its popular, then do promotion-relegation for 2009.

It better be more than just one game (Vic v. Rest) or it will be such a cop-out.

If we're going to bring it back, let's be serious about it.

1. Six teams represented in two divisions: initially VIC, SA, WA in Div 1; TAS, NSW/ACT, QLD/NT in Div 2.

2. Played in round robin format over three weekends (after Rds 6, 11, 16). One game from each Div on each weekend. Each team plays on 2 of the 3 weekends. Pre-season comp shortened by 2 weeks to accommodate extra SoO weeks during the season.

3. Winner of Div 1 crowned Champion of Australia. Winner of Div 2 promoted to Div 1 for following year replacing last placed team in Div 1.

4. SoO played every year.

5. Players paid well to keep them interested (e.g. $30K per Div 1 game, $15K per Div 2 game, plus bonus for winning Div 1).

6. Players awarded Brownlow votes to keep them interested.

7. All-Australian selection limited to those who have played a SoO game in the year (to keep them interested).

8. Clubs awarded an extra $50K on the salary cap for each player representing a Div 1 side and $25K for each player representing a Div 2 side (to keep the clubs interested).

9. Top 4 clubs providing SoO reps awarded extra draft picks between Rd 1 and Rd 2 (e.g. club supplying most gets pick #17, club supplying 4th most gets pick #20) to keep clubs interested.

Whadyya think? Could it work?

i'd presume Adel, the 2 WA teams, Brisbane would be 4
My first thought was that it'd be 5 interstate teams. Sydney'd be against it because of their efforts in making the game as dull and lifeless as possible.

I don't think it would work, for a number of reasons.

The gloss would go off it again if played every year. Having it once every couple of years would keep the opportunities limited for the players and hopefully make them want to play - not for the cash, but for the chance. After all, without international comps Origin would really be our world cup. So every 3 or 4 years is enough. (As much as I'd like it every year, it wouldn't work over time.)

TV networks and the league won't want too many weekends of three games (with only one involving a big state) over 8 H&A games.
It could be that pre-season was scrapped and the regular season started earlier to allow origin, but I wouldn't expect that to happen either.

I like the idea from a football perspective - though I'd prefer all states and territories to field their own sides. Failing that, at least split Qld and NT; both would be stronger than Tas currently anyway.
Adjust it slightly, for the first year: div1 Vic, SA, WA; div2 Qld, NT, ACT/NSW, Tas
Round robin and a final in div1, round robin with no final in div 2. Each week there is one div1 match and 2 div2 matches.
On the weekend of the final, a playoff between div1 3rd and the winner of div2 to determine who goes into div1 next time.
Or Qld could be a 4th div 1 team for the first year.

But, sadly, its not realistic to expect anything like that to be scheduled. It simply won't generate the money and TV viewership that 8 games do.

Just saw on the late news that the AFL said the game would be in Melbourne. The last SOO game was played in Melbourne, so you would think the next one would be in Adelaide. AFL my arse
