Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Melbourne has made at least one change to its team in its previous 94 matches. The last unchanged Demons side played in R8 2006.

Though I'm sure at least once we've made no changes at the selection table and then had an emergency come in before the match.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

  1. So far this season, no team has kicked the same number of behinds in every quarter of a match. The last full seasons with no occurrence were 1998, 1993, 1992, 1989, 1988, 1979, 1977, 1970, 1968, 1966, 1959 and 1956.
  2. Between 1945 and 1951 there was only one occurrence of a team kicking the same number of behinds in every quarter - by Melbourne against St. Kilda late in 1949.
  3. One of the most amazing cases of even scoring by a team was by Sydney against Collingwood at the SCG in 1986. The Swans kicked 5.5 (35) in every quarter except the second, when they kicked 4.5 (29)
  4. Round 13 saw the two highest score and two of the three biggest wins by teams finishing below the defeated side on the ladder - in 1978 and 1983. In both cases there were astonishing performances by a player from the following division - Ian Dunstan of Footscray and Matt Rendell of Fitzroy.
  5. The (in)famously windy Round 13 of 1944 saw some of the most extreme contrasts in accuracy, and included the one game won with three fewer goals and the biggest winning margin in behinds alone
    • It’s ironic that whilst St. Kilda have been the principle tenant at the Junction Oval, arguably the two most amazing games there were played by South Melbourne (1944) and Fitzroy (1983)

Brodie Atkinson seems like an intriguing story. Debuted for St Kilda in Round 11, 1993. 25 touches, 4 tackles, Rising Star nom. Played the next week, then entered the football wilderness until Round 2, 1999, when he played for Adelaide. Anyone able to enlighten why this was...?

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

After playing there from 1897 to 1964, St Kilda recorded their biggest ever win at the Junction Oval in Fitzroy's first home game at the ground in Rd 2, 1970. St Kilda 23.23 (161) defeated Fitzroy 7.9 (51).
That might have been St. Kilda’s biggest win until 1991, but it can hardly compare with a game like the 1983 one where Fitzroy scored 34.16 (220) to North Melbourne’s 10.10 (70):

  1. biggest loss by any team to make the finals
    1. previous biggest 120 points by North to Fitzroy in 1958
    2. previous biggest by a minor premier 69 points by Geelong to Essendon in 1952 (National Day Round) and Richmond to Collingwood in 1974
  2. highest score against a team to make the finals
    1. previous record 32.14 (206) by Hawthorn (also against North Melbourne) in 1982; only other double century against a finalist 31.14 (200) by North Melbourne against Melbourne in 1990
    2. previous highest score against a minor premier 23.17 (155) by Essendon against Geelong in 1952 (National Day Round)
      1. Fitzroy had equalled both those records by three-quarter time and with Conlan kicking five goals, added 10.5 (65) to 0.5 (5) in the last quarter!
  3. one of only two times one team has had three players kick seven or more goals in a match (Rendell 8, Quinlan 7, Conlan 7). the other was by Hawthorn against Geelong in 1977 (Hudson 8, Hendrie 8, Leigh Matthews 7)
  4. one of only two times (the other yet again in 1952) that a minor premier has conceded the season’s highest score. The only times since then when a team considered a potential premiership contender has done so have been
    1. Geelong in 1994 (but that was in the opening round!)
    2. Western Bulldogs in 1998 (in an upset against Carlton)
  5. biggest win by a team not winning the second quarter (North kicked six of their ten goals including three with as many kicks to Ross Glendinning)
It is amazing (or is it that Fitzroy either become overconfident or suffered from the physical pressure in the wet at Windy Hill the following week) that St. Kilda, who when Round 13 was being played had won only one game, were to beat the Lions in a game equally sensational six weeks later.

    2. previous biggest by a minor premier 69 points by Geelong to Essendon in 1952 (National Day Round) and Richmond to Collingwood in 1974

Those three late-season losses by the Lions i think to St.Kilda, the Dogs and someone else i cannot recall were so costly to them. North finished top with an uninspiring 16-6 and moderate percentage, the Lions were 15-7 and finished 3rd ahead of Essendon, who for the 3rd year in a row equalled the number of wins as the 3rd placed side but alas met in the Elimination final each year. But a Lion side in top place would have seen them play most likely the winner of North vs Hawthorn, and they would have had two chances to win a place into the Grand Final. In retrospect, the tough free kick awarded to Tuck for a deliberate out-of-bounds was deadly to Lion hopes of winning a flag, as the Hawks won by just 4 points in a high-scoring Qualifying final. If the Lions won that match i am certain that the Kangaroos would have been an easier opponent in the 2nd Semi than a confident Essendon in the 1st semi proved to be.

Got two Brownlow votes on debut also. First round draft pick and delisted at the end of the year; must be a story there.

Later tied for the Magarey with Andrew Jarman before being re-drafted by the Crows.

The other loss was to Sydney, and the Lions actually kicked 15.6 (96) in the first half but only 2.9 (21) in the second. They faded out in the same way the following week against Carlton: being at one stage six goals up but losing by the same margin. This and the fade-out after kicking 9.3 (57) at the Western Oval suggests Fitzroy really were suffering from overconfidence after their amazing win over North, bit without footage one cannot tell what was going wrong with them.

One must remember that the tough Windy Hill game began a similar slump in the form of the Bombers, who lost four games out of five and had one uninspiring win over a Footscray side in the middle of a seven-game losing streak. There is an odd difference that in their losses to Collingwood (only one from 1981 to 1985) and North in Rounds 15 and 16 the Bombers were dreadful in the first half but fought back without ever looking like winning. If Essendon had taken a different tactic, they might have lost more easily to Fitzroy but recovered quickly enough to beat the Magpies and Kangaroos, so that with Fitzroy maintaining form, those two teams would have solidified the top two places and left the Hawks and Kangaroos to fight for third place. (You might note me saying the same thing about North Melbourne against the unbeatable Carlton side in the last round of 1987, where I say trying to win against a team that had in Round 19 placed as well as Fitzroy did against North in 1983 left them totally jaded and without fight in the Elimination Final).

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

These are probably a bit lame, only 4 and not really stats so apologies if these are too out of place

1985 was the last year a Swans player wore a lace up guernsey

The Swans have not lost whilst wearing the red v style heritage jumper

The qualifying final and grand final was won or lost by the same margin against the same opponent in both 2005 and 2006 ie: QF2005 West Coast def Sydney by 4 points GF2005 Sydney def West Coast 4 points QF 2006 Sydney def West Coast 1 point GF2006 West Coast def Sydney 1 point

Gary Buccanara changed the back of the Swans jumper to red to signal change with his coaching tenure

Tuck of the Hawks (400 gamer) has played in more games than Fremantle itself.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Ian Gillett is a fascinating case.

Although he won South Melbourne’s Best and Fairest in 1955, he never polled a single vote in the Brownlow in a 138-game career. He has one of the longest careers without a Brownlow vote, and I am sure no player with such a long voteless career could have won a club award as he did.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Round 13, 2010 (Completed)

1) 3pts. The lowest 2nd half total conceded by St Kilda v Geelong. Previous: 4 pts. round 8, 1908 - St Kilda 7.13-55 v Geelong 5.9-39 - 2nd half - St Kilda 5.5-35 v Geelong 0.4-4.

2) Geelong is the first team this century to be goalless after half time more than once.

3) Collingwood has the best success rate against Sydney/SM in Sydney of all visiting teams this century - 75% - 6 wins 2 losses.

4) Sydney/SM v Collingwood: The only match ever played where the winning team won the first and third quarters by 9 pts. and lost the last by 9 pts.

Some amaizng stats from the round there. The Geelong 4 behinds in a half I did not notice until you pointed it out. That is dismal. The Collingwood one over Sydney doesnt look like it will end for a while. The Swans just can not beat the pies.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Ron, can you find these out for me?

Most games played until first goal (Rod Carter the Sydney backman took 215 games!)

Least goals in a career by a captain (No deputies or vice captains. Doesn't matter if it's one game as captain)

Most goals by a player who never managed double-figures in his entire career (The list begins with Kevin Bartlett, Alastair Lynch, David Neitz and Stewart Loewe)

Sorry, I don't have stats for captains at present.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Ron the Bear,

it is amazing how well I knew these.

Only on four occasions has a player with the most games without a goal actually scored a goal, yet two of these were for the same club in the same season; viz. Richmond in 1934 with Basil McCormack and Joe Murdoch. The former case, on a very wet day at Corio Oval where the Tigers kicked the lowest score of the year until the last round, was due to an injury, but Murdoch’s six rounds later was the result of him being moved to the forward line because Richmond had so powerful a defence that they could not fit him in. In fact, Murdoch played both finals - where the Tigers showed themselves conclusively the season’s best side with a devastating defence that demolished both Geelong and the record-breaking South Melbourne attack - on the half-forward line.

I had not realised Shannon Grant had beaten Dale Weightman’s record for most goals without kicking six or more in a match! He did so two years ago - in Round 7 of 2008 - so it is perhaps natural I was not checking carefully enough? I knew that for a long time Dick Reynolds and Rod Ashman led the list of most goals without ever managing seven in a match, but O‘Loughlin would have beaten Ashman in the 2005 finals and Reynolds in Round 12 of 2007 - the same thing would apply.

Thanks very much for those details, Ron the Bear!

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Round 14 – 2010

1) Hawthorn has become the first team ever to lose 6 consecutive matches and then win 7 consecutive in the same season.

2) Port Adelaide's 18th loss from their last 22 "on the road".

3) Away from Victoria, Essendon have lost 9 of their last 10 matches, 16 of their last 20, 25 of their last 30, 34 of their last 40

4) The 3rd time Richmond has beaten Sydney/SM by only winning the last quarter. Previous: Round 8 1947 - Richmond 15.13-103 v Sydney/SM 15.9-99 and round 11, 1921 - Richmond 9.12-66 v Sydney/SM 8.13-6

5) First time the teams 1st and 2nd on the ladder have each won by 35 pts. in the same round.

...

A little too one-dimensional for my liking.

Riewoldt has 34.87% of Richmond's goals this season. The last player to have kicked such a large slice of his club's goals at Round 14 was Lockett in 1996 (81/205, 39.51%).

In 1933 both Bob Pratt (90/190, 47.37%) and Gordon Coventry (81/176, 46.02%) had kicked more goals by Round 14 than the next 12 players combined at their respective clubs.
