For my Geelong mate above:

Essendon are the only team that has won 16 consecutive games on 3 occasions.

Essendon in 2000 are the only team to have won more than 18 consecutive H&A games in the one season.

Essendon are the only team that has won a premiership in more than 8 of the 12 decades since 1897 (Ess 10; Carl 8; Coll, Melb, Rich 6).



One for Geelong. When you take into consideration wins, losses and percentage, Geelong hold the best record over 10, 25 and 50 matches. Over the course of this year, Geelong also have the opportunity to secure the best record over 75 games.

Please excuse the Geelong-centric nature of these stats. I am a keen GFC fan, but not at the expense of appreciating the game objectively (as the following selection of stats might suggest).


Port melbourne played in 8 consecutive GF's (51-59) and manged to win just one of them.

Geelong are a 50/50 proposition in games decided by 1 point, having won 23 and lost 23.

Geelong are also pretty much a 50/50 proposition in games decided by 1 goal or less, having won 116 and lost 117.

Graham "Polly" Framer had 11 handballs in Geelongs 1963 GF win, exactly 1/4 of the teams total handballs. To put that in a contemporary context, a player would now need approx. 45 handballs in a match to equal Farmers individual to team ratio.

Only three clubs have managed 20 consecutive wins. Essendon once, Brisbane once, and Geelong four times.

Geelong's result in 1 point games is actually 24 won and 22 lost as the round 6 1909 match which St Kilda won by 1 point was forfeited to Geelong on account of St Kilda playing a disqualified player.

Also I believe the correct figures up to round 9 2009 for Geelong's results in matches decided by 6 points or less are: Played 270, Won 141, lost 129. (Including St Kilda forfeit.)

Melbourne's record over the last 3 years for Rounds 1 to 9.

Assuming they lose next week to St Kilda, that's 3 years in a row Melbourne will start 1-9.

Melbourne got there. 1-9 in three consecutive seasons. Amazingly in the season just prior (2006), they went 11/12 during the middle of the year. Since that patch: 12.5/63.

Thanks for the correction Rogers Results. On All Stats, however, they appear to have Geelong results decided by 6 points or less as 109 for 110 against. By the way, congratulations on your site.

Cheers Red and Black, they are some very impressive numbers. Essendon 2000 were a truly great side to watch.

You have erred to Geelongs advantage, however, with regard premierships won in decades since 1897. Geelong are actually on 5 (20's, 30's, 50's, 60's, 00's). Of course the Cats peg back a couple if we take pre-VFL Association history into account. Here Geelong would have premierships in 7 decades from 14 played and Essendon 10 from 14.

Speaking of premierships in decades stats, here is my favourite "obscure" stat (for obvious reasons):

Hawthorn are the only club to have won premierships in the last five decades consecutively (60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s). The only club that can match that feat is Carlton, who would need to win the flag this year to do so. A result that would be, to be kind, highly unlikely.

Andrew McLeod and Tyson Edwards turned out for their 285th game as teammates, two behind Scott West and Brad Johnson, and 4 shy of the alltime record of Kevin Bartlett & Francis Bourke.

If Kevin Sheedy becomes Richmond's caretaker coach:

1. He finished his career as Essendon coach with an away game to West Coast in Round 22. Assuming Richmond don't make finals, he would finish his career as Richmond coach with an away game to West Coast in Round 22.

2. He will get to coach against West Coast in consecutive games (R22, 2007; R12, 2009).

3. If he coached them to 3 finals this year, he will join the 900 club (game played and/or coached).

4. If he coached them to 4 finals this year, he will have coached 650 games.

5. He finished his career as a Richmond player with 2 wins from his last 8 games. He also finished his career as an Essendon coach with 2 wins from his last 8 games. Would he finish his career as Richmond coach with a similar statistic?

And of course, he would get to coach against Essendon in Round 17.

supplementary: anyone know Sheedy's coaching record against Malthouse?

After 10 rounds Essendon has only 1 player who has kicked more than 10 goals. Geelong has 8.

One stat that surprises if you watch the highlights every week, Patrick Ryder is averaging 3.2 marks per game. His career average is 3.8.

This season St Kilda has kept its opposition goalless in nine quarters. That's more than the combined efforts of twelve clubs: Geelong (2); Essendon, Richmond, Hawthorn, W Bulldogs, Sydney, West Coast (all 1);
North Melb, Port Adel, Bris Lions, Fremantle, Melbourne (all 0).

In St.Kilda's first three seasons (1897 - 1899) they lost all 42 games.

The first home and away game they won was Round 1 1900 where they beat Melbourne by just 1 point. That was also the only match they won for the season.

St Kilda (10), Adelaide (10), Western Bulldogs (9), Fremantle (9), Port Adelaide (8), Sydney* (8)

* although have done so as South Melbourne (1918, 1933, 1935)

The shortest ever player to play the game was Jim 'Nipper' Bradford, at just 154cm he played seven games with Collingwood and nine games with North Melbourne during 1943 and 1949

at the end of round 1, 1987, the West Coast Eagles had the best win/loss ratio in H&A games. 100% (1 win, 0 defeats)


ironically, at the end of round 1, 1995, fremantle were the least successful team in the league (and still are ) with a 0% winning ratio in H&A games. (0 wins, 1 defeat).

in 2001 the u11s North Ryde team lost 5 games all year (2 finals) all to the undefeated team

yeah I was kinda bored. 28min untill the Australia-Bahrain (Or is it Qatar) coverage begins

and while bringing obscure stuff and me knowing some weird crap.

last year somewhere in Sydney Juniors, a team went the entire home and away season undefeated, then went out in straight sets in the finals. Both as 1 point defeats
