Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Amazing that Geelong, a side that has finished bottom just five times is on this inglorious list on four occasions. Admittedly 1918-1919 and also 1941 (but then 1944 and 1945, Geelong were in recess in 1942-43) it was wartime but that is quite a few seasons of terrible starts.

Geelong in 1971 and 1972 despite being 1-10 twice, managed to win 5 games in 1971 (their last season of fewer than 6 wins) and were 7-15 in 1972. Geelong actually won 7 of their last 12 games that year after starting 0-10.

Geelong's worst start to a season since 1973 when they were 2-9, was a 3-8 start in 2003. Every year from 1974 onwards bar 2003 it's been 4-7 or better.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Have to say I haven't bought any of the recent talk that Melbourne were on the right track. In my opinion, they still have a long way to go and are heading for the worst AFL season in recent history. They have won 9 games in their last 55 and I think they have no chance of winning 4 games this year, and wouldn't be surprised if they only win 2. So I wanted to check the wooden spoon records in recent years:

Code:
[B][U]Year ## Team W D Pct[/U][/B]
2008 16 Melbourne 3 0 62.6
2007 16 Richmond 3 1 77.2
2006 16 Carlton 3 1 74.2
2005 16 Carlton 4 1 75.5
2004 16 Richmond 4 0 69.2
2003 16 Bulldogs 3 1 74.8
2002 16 Carlton 3 0 73.1
2001 16 Fremantle 2 0 72.0
2000 16 St Kilda 2 1 70.5
1999 16 Collingwood 4 0 84.8
1998 16 Brisbane 5 1 75.8
1997 16 Melbourne 4 0 60.8
1996 16 Fitzroy 1 0 49.5

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Melbourne have scored 0 or 1 goals in 12 of 44 quarters this year.

Melbourne have scored 0, 1 or 2 goals in 24 of 44 quarters this year.

No idea how that compares with other teams.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Geelong have won their last 5 games at Football Park. They are the only non-SA club to achieve this.

Geelong have won their last 5 games at Subiaco. Together with Port, they are the only non-WA clubs to achieve this. Geelong can claim the outright record with a victory against Fremantle in Round 12.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Thought I'd check the records for the SA and WA teams at home.

Football Park - consecutive wins
11 - Port Adelaide
9 - Adelaide

Subiaco - consecutive wins
20 - West Coast
9 - Fremantle

would you happen to know Geelong's record at skilled stadium?

I wouldnt be so sure about that with Port, in one of the years they got the minor premriship they went 11-0 at home games, and they would also have a win designated 'away' against the crows, and I know that the year before the 03 and 04 seasons, they had wins in the semi final which would extend it even further.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Sydney had an amazing record at the SCG in the mid to late 90s. I remember St. Kilda beating them one year (maybe '97) to break their sequence of consecutive wins at the SCG.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Wow.

would you happen to know Geelong's record at skilled stadium?

Corio Oval - 16 wins then a draw from 1932 to 1934
Kardinia Park - 22 straight wins from 1954 to 1956

Geelong's current run is 12 wins at Kardinia Park.

I wouldnt be so sure about that with Port, in one of the years they got the minor premriship they went 11-0 at home games, and they would also have a win designated 'away' against the crows, and I know that the year before the 03 and 04 seasons, they had wins in the semi final which would extend it even further.

If you can recall that Port had wins in the semi finals, how could you forget that they lost successive home qualifying finals? Their record is as below:

2000: L W 3L D 2W L 3W
2001: 4W L W L 5W L
2002: L 11W L W
2003: L 11W L W
2004: 4W L 9W
2005: W L D L 6W L W L

2002 QF loss to Collingwood
2003 R2 loss to Brisbane
2003 QF loss to Sydney
2004 R7 loss to Adelaide

I knew they went undefeated in 'home' games in one season. And I just added a semi final win before that to get 12. So it was the 04 result in the first showdown, that threw me off, because it was designated as a Crows game.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Jade Rawlings is Richmond's caretaker coach for 11 games. How will he do? How will he compare to other short-lived coaches?

69 men have coached between 10 and 22 games.
- 43 have achieved a win rate of less than 40%
- 26 have achieved a win rate of 40% or greater
- 22 have achieved a win rate of 50% or greater
- 10 have achieved a win rate of 60% or greater
- 4 have achieved a win rate of 70% or greater
- 1 has achieved a win rate of 80% or greater

For Rawlings:

3/11 = 27.3%
4/11 = 36.4%
5/11 = 45.5%
6/11 = 54.5%
7/11 = 63.6%

Who was this man, and why wasn't his contracted extended!

As for Rawlings i'll make the following baseless prediction:

He will make 8/11. Enough for the Richmond faithful to DEMAND that the club sign him on a 5 year contract. The RFC, always ready to acquiesce to its passionate members, will dutifully oblige and the Tigers will subsequently finish 9th in each year of his tenure.

http://www.gfc.com.au/1931/tabid/9380/default.aspx

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Coghlan

Much like Alan Joyce in 1988, it looks like Charlie Clymo filled in for a season in place of Arthur Coghlan. I don't know why. Coghlan was captain-coach in 1929-30, making the grand final in 1930, albeit losing to Collingwood (their 4th on the trot). Perhaps he or the club thought it best he step down, and he did, from both posts. Rover Ted Baker became captain in 1931, while Charlie Clymo became coach, and Geelong won their 2nd premiership*.

Rumour is that Clymo was not an entirely popular fellow and that he was offered more money to go coach in the bush, which I presume he did. Geelong great Reg Hickey took over both captain and coaching roles in 1932, then in 1933, Coghlan who had retired as a player the previous year, resumed the coaching mantle while Hickey continued on as captain.

* Coincidentally, 1931 was the first time the McIntyre finals system was used.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Lifelike from the Bulldogs board deserves the credit for this one.

In 2006, 2007 and 2008, the Bulldogs played Geelong in round 16.

In 2006 we won three of the last six after winning nine of the first fifteen.

In 2007 we didn't win any of the last six after winning nine of the first fifteen.

In 2008 we lost four of the last six after being winning thirteen of the first fifteen.

Overall we've been 31/45 before playing them, and 7/21 after playing them.

Could purely be coincidence, but at least we don't play them in round 16 this year.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

North Melbourne won 4 games by 16 points in 2007

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

South Melbourne / Sydeny has been the most colourful team in history with players such as Green, Brown, White, Black, Orange, Grey, Rose, Scarlett and Plum having all played for the club.

Every club besides WCE have had a Brown play for them (Eagles had a Browning).

In 2004, Brisbane vs Melbourne match had two Brown's, two White's, a Green and a Black playing.

How about Mitch Brown playing for them now?

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Last night's crowd of 50,820 was the 2nd largest crowd that either Carlton or St Kilda has played in front of at Docklands.

As the designated home team at for a game at Docklands, Carlton now have the biggest and 6th biggest crowds. No other team is represented twice in the top 6 (as the home team).

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

More evidence of a good draw for some?

The earliest any team meets Geelong or St Kilda for the last time in this H&A season:

Round 7 - Collingwood
Round 10 - Essendon
Round 13 - Port Adelaide, Richmond
Round 15 - Brisbane, West Coast

have to feel sorry for Melbourne though who have already played Geelong and St Kilda once already, and will meet both of them again after Round 15.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

1. Dustin Fletcher has played 300 games infront a total 14,478,220 but has never played infront of over 100,000

2. The worst crowd ever recorded was between Hawthorn and Melbourne but was the second highest scoring match of Round 8 1941. It attracted 1,875 people.

3. Of the 2003 Brownlow Medalist Mark Ricciuto is the only player to have more then 2 Best On Grounds. But has the highest number (66) of votes together by the winners in one year.

4. In 1916 Fitzroy capped a bad season on a winning note. Due to war only Carlton, Collingwood, Richmond and Fitzroy feild teams. Fitzroy finished on the bottom with a record of 2-1-9 but made the top 4. It made its way to the Grand Final and knocked off minor premiers Carlton by 29 points.

5. The Brisbane Lions has the record for average premierships since entered in the league with 4.3. Its closest rivals are Essendon, Carlton and West Cost with 7. St Kilda has the worst with 112.
