Mathematically speaking, the original McIntyre final 8 system was the best for the minor premier, but it had some anomalies that the public could not accept and rightfully so.
1993-1999:
Minor premier winning the premiership: 3 of 7 (42.9%)
Minor premier making the grand final: 6 of 7 (85.7%)

2000-2017:
Minor premier winning the premiership: 6 of 18 (33.3%)
Minor premier making the grand final: 14 of 18 (77.8%)

I don't see any team outside the top 4 challenging this year, and if West Coast lose to Collingwood, we should be pretty confident of an all Victorian grand final.

Not keen on the highest scoring team in the league (Melb)?

I'll be hoping the Dees do well but it's a tall order to get past Geelong and Richmond/Hawthorn.

I was on their bandwagon last year when they got to 5th and I thought they could be the fairytale team like the Bulldogs of 2016. But then they went to sleep and didn't even make the finals. Historically, 8th has done very well against 5th in the finals.

I guess the next question is whether there are any other instances?

I guess the next question is whether there are any other instances?

In the complete history of the competition, Gordon Coventry would have been number 1 for games and goals when he reitred, and for a season or two prior.

Paul Chapman is currently equal-118th most games and 118th most goals.

If Goddard, Hodge or Ablett play on next year, then Nick Riewoldt could drop to 21st most games played to match his 21st most goals kicked.

In addition, Jack Titus would have been second to Gordon Coventry for games and goals when he retired in 1943.

Richmond is only the third team since 2003 to go 11-0 at home during the Home and Away season.

Geelong were 11-0 at home in 2004, 2008, 2013 and 2014. They didn't win the premiership in any of those years.

Hawthorn were 11-0 in 2014 and converted that record into a premiership.

2014 is the only time in the AFL era that two teams have been undefeated at home during the Home and Away season.

I loved State of Origin back in the 80s but since we introduced clubs from WA and SA there seems no point now. Clubs don't want it, coaches don't want it, elite players don't want it. Furthermore, I hated having a weekend with just one game, especially if that game was not in Victoria. For that reason, the ridiculous 7-1 (2004), 6-2 (2005-06, 2008) and 5-3 (2007, 2009-10) round splits were shelved.

Unlike NRL State of Origin, the best form of Australian Rules football is the regular game between clubs, rather than match-ups between composite sides.

This current bye weekend sucks and football fans are missing their dose of sport. There have been suggestions of a play-off weekend and I am confident this will happen before too long. Just like Good Friday football was inevitable.

So I thought I'd look at possible playoff matchups, beginning with the 18-team competition in 2012.

What I like about play-offs:
- only teams 1 to 6 get the week off
- harder for 7 and 8 to win their Elimination Final (or 9 or 10), not to mention the premiership
- while 7 and 8 do not get a home final, they would get a home playoff
- teams 9-12 still have something worth fighting for late in the season
- the AFL will like the opportunity for a possible extra 1-2 games at Docklands

PLAYOFF WEEKEND
2012:
7-FR (14-8) v 10-CA (11-11) @ Subiaco ; 8-NM (14-8) v 9-SK (12-10) @ Docklands
2013: 7-PA (12-10) v 10-AD @ Football Park ; 8-CA (11-11) v 9-NM (10-12) @ Docklands
2014: 7-ES (12-1-9) v 10-AD (11-11) @ Docklands ; 8-RI (12-10) v 9-WC (11-11) @ Docklands
2015: 7-AD (13-8) v 10-GE (11-1-9) @ Football Park ; 8-NM (13-9) v 9-PA (12-10) @ Docklands
2016: 7-WB (15-7) v 10-PA (10-12) @ Docklands ; 8-NM (12-10) v 9-SK (12-10) @ Docklands
2017: 7-ES (12-10) v 10-WB (11-11) @ Docklands ; 8-WC (12-10) v 9-ME (12-10) @ Subiaco
2018: 7-GW (13-1-8) v 10-PA (12-10) @ Showgrounds ; 8-GE (13-9) v 9-NM (12-10) @ Docklands

Observations:
9 playoff games at Docklands in 7 seasons
2013 - all Adelaide playoff, Brisbane just miss playoffs by percentage (albeit 18.5%)
2015 - Adelaide v Geelong playoff in the year that their H&A match was historically cancelled
2017 - St Kilda miss playoffs by 0.14%

10 (8 times) - 1987, 1990, 1991, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2005, 2010

SANFL 1984. - After 6 rounds, Port Adelaide were 6-0 and on top of the ladder. Norwood were 1-5 and equal last.

Port Adelaide finished the season as minor premiers with a 17-5 record, Norwood won 12 of their last 16 games to finish 13-9 and in 5th position. Port Adelaide won their 2nd semi final convincingly and went through to the grand final. Norwood miraculously made the grand final from an elimination final, defeating South Adelaide 137-90, Central District 105-92 and Glenelg 107-89.

Yes, Norwood managed to do the (almost) impossible, defeating Port Adelaide 100-91 and winning the grand final from 5th. They remain the only club in VFL, AFL, SANFL or WAFL history to achieve this unique feat.

VFL teams to make a Grand Final from 5th in a Final 5 system:
Collingwood (1980) - lost by 81 points
Essendon (1983) - lost by 83 points
Melbourne (1988) - lost by 96 points
