Re: Post your stats questions here

This won't take very long to check, I just can't be bothered.

Has there been a team finish top four for five consecutive years in the modern era?
on the ladder or including finals?? north finished top 4 on the ladder in 6 of 8 seasons 1993 to 2000 but missed in 1997 and 1995

but if you're including finals they made preliminary finals from 1994 through to 2000 so 7 consecutive seasons there....

Re: Post your stats questions here

Thanks to Rogers Results for the Richmond vs Carlton score from the 1982 Commonwealth Games exhibition match. In relation to the date, the Games were held between September 30 and October 9.

According to the webpage
http://www.runnerstribe.com/article/post/show/id/824, Aussie runner Peter Bourke tuned up for the 800 metres final by attending the game, which was played on the day before the 800m final. Bourke took part in a spirited kick to kick session at half time with some mates on the oval.

So does anyone know the date the 800 metres final was run?

Re: Post your stats questions here

Or consecutive draws on the one ground?

Only the second times draws have occurred in consecutive matches on the same ground, the first being Ess v St K 66-66 in R19 1968, and then Ess v Geel 91-91 in R2 1969 at Windy Hill.

Consecutive rounds has happened a few more times (limiting to the same H&A season):
R1 & R2 1911 (there were two draws in R2)
R4 & R5 1921 (also two draws in R5)
R11 & R12 1952
R14 & R15 1956
R15 & R16 1964
R7 & R8 1967
R5 & R6 2008
R1 & R2 2011

Hasn't been done three times as far as I know, but we're on the hattrick now...

Re: Post your stats questions here

Since the advent of the top 8 in 1994, what is the record for the most consecutive weeks a team has been inside the top 8?

Geelong's currently been inside the top 8 for 85 consecutive weeks, since Round 6, 2007.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Unless Jason Akermanis makes a shock comeback next year, Sydney forward Daniel Bradshaw will be the last Brisbane Bear. No Fitzroy players currently remain, the last Fitzroy Lions player being Chris Johnson, who retired from the Brisbane Lions at the end of 2007. And although Sydney & South Melbourne are the same team, the last person to have played for the Swans as South Melbourne was Dennis Carroll, who retired mid-season in 1993.

Could somebody please let me know who the last University player was?

My prototype script to find this indicates that the most is 87 consecutive rounds in the top 8 by Essendon 1998-2002.

Seeing as Geelong looks to be on the cusp of a record.......

Transferred to Melbourne:
Brake
Little
Bryan
Rodriguez
Park
Doubleday

Transferred to Fitzroy
Barker

Transferred to Sth Melbourne
Willis

Transferred to Essendon
McIntosh

In case the Bear with the Best Player Database doesn't answer this.

A bit of detective work at http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/stats_idx.html should find the answer.

I'd guess Roy Park.

Carl Willis
46 games for University
29 for South Melbourne 1915 and 1920-21, so possibly fought in WW1 in the interim. Finished as captain of South, last game Round 18, September 17, 1921. He "died suddenly" (Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers) at Berrigan, NSW, aged 37.

Jack Brake also played in 1921 but his final game was in Round 4.

Interestingly, no ex-University player featured in 1916 or 1918, in senior games at least.

NB I think the last ex-South player was Anthony Daniher at Essendon, R20 1994.

According to, The Complete History of Every Club in the VFL/AFL (1998),
"University suffered the VFL's highest number of casualties in World War One."

Roy Park played with Footscray VFA 1920-21.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Wow. So where's that stand in the record books for most possies in a quarter?

Don't know. Q by Q stats have only intermittently been made available, and I don't know of any site that displays the numbers for past years.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Does anyone keep a record of umpires "dodgy bounces" ie when they have to rebounce the ball? some umps seem to consistently stuff up.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Gary Ablett has experienced a 157 point win against Richmond (2007) whilst also experiencing a 119 point loss against Carlton (2011). Is this the largest known player win/loss differential known?

Re: Post your stats questions here

Hawthorn were trailing against Melbourne at half time 3.13 to 8.3 (sadly I support Melbourne), and then suddenly, the Hawks kicked 8.11 in the third quarter and ran out comfortable winners in the end. Now, 8.11 equates to 19 shots at goal in a single quarter, and South Melbourne (nowadays Sydney) once kicked 17.4 in a single quarter against the Saints, which equates to 21 shots.

What's the most shots by a single team in a quarter? A list of teams who scored 17 times or more in a single quarter would be good.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Does anybody know when Peter Landy commentated his 1000th game for Channel 7? It was during 1997. I recall reading about it in The Herald-Sun one weekend that year. I thought he achieved the milestone during a Sunday game at the SCG, but when trying to research this via Herald-Sun microfilm, I haven't as yet managed to come across the article which related to Landy's 1000th game.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Two brownlow questions.

What is the most number of votes, out of a potential 78 that a side has received? I'm imagining a really dominant side like the bombers in 2000 would have had nearly three quarters.

Second, with swanny and pendles last year. Whats the most votes two players from the same team have received without either winning the brownlow?

Dont you mean 3+2+1 = 6 x 22 rounds = 132 maximum votes a side could get in a season? I'm sure there has been a few 100+ sides

Edit You will find your answers here;
http://www.stats.rleague.com/afl/brownlow/teamtotals.html

Ignore 1976 and 1977 when both umpires gave 3-2-1votes.

Ess 2000 21-1 W/L record produced 116 votes
Gee 2008 21-1 W/L record produced 112 votes
StK 2009 20-2 W/L record produced 110 votes

The most votes a team can receive is 132 (22x3 + 22x2 + 22x1). Highest percentages of votes:

It is apparent from the table that winning teams receiving the lion's share of votes is a relatively recent phenomenon. Prior to the 1980's, players from the losing team stood a much greater chance of being awarded votes. Everyone loves a winner these days...
