Which begs the question, what's the top 10 margins a debutant's played in?

(speechless.) :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:.

has any player had 100% of his career games as finals?? surely a few.....

Code:
Player Cb Year M G Games

Cooke, Michael C. Ha 1975 2 4 SF(W),GF(L)
Hay, Bob A. Ri 1942 2 1 SF(W),GF(L)

Miller, Gil Sy 1924 1 1 RR(W)
Sheahan, Gerald Me 1897 1 0 RR(L)

The Cooke and James cases are fairly well known.

Morbid question. This would probably be from knowledge rather than stats.

Players whose career was cut short by their death?

another random(ish) one....

grand final teams when all 22 (or however many where playing per team at the time) all had previous grand final expierence?? been done before?? i'm gonna guess no because so many people seem to retire after winning grand finals.... but i imagine plenty have gone close...

the most obvious candidates are collingwood late 20's, melbourne 50's, hawthorn 80's, brisbane and geelong of modern times... but there could be a dark horse. only need to make two grand finals in a row to have a shot...

Here's a short list.

Troy Broadbridge (Me)
Darren Millane (Co)
Ron James (WB)
Wayne Gordon (Co)
Peter Crimmins (Ha)
Maurie Sankey (Ca)
Fred Phillips (Ha)
Norm Collins (Ha)
Les Witto (Ca)
Lyle Downs (Ca)

There may be others, memory is hazy. Plus the ~144 who died in the armed forces.

Has never happened (excluding replayed GF's in the same year). The following teams contained just the one player without GF experience in a previous year:

Geelong 2009
Brisbane 2004
Melbourne 1958
Collingwood 1930
Carlton 1909

"league footballer death"

You'll discover who in Ron's list died of a a heart attack at training
and who was killed by a boil on his elbow in the off season before
he could take up his new position as captain-coach.

Rugby seems to have been a more deadly pastime too.

This past weekend saw the top half of the ladder play a team in the bottom half. Not only that, but the bottom half won 44.44% of the games.

1. How many times has the top half of the ladder played a team in the bottom half (inc. and exc. 1916)? This would only apply to years with an even number of sides, or when the middle team has a bye in a season with an odd number of sides.

2. Has the bottom half ever won more than 44.44% of the matches? If so, I'd expect earlier in the season to more likely than the middle or later part of the season.

Sydney have become the first team this century to "kick the year". They scored 20.12 in the year 2012. The only other team to have done this is, yes, it had to be, South Melbourne. And when did they do this? In 1912, a perfect 100 years ago, when they kicked 19.12 versus Richmond in round 11.

I'll take your word for it in that there have been no other instances of a team "kicking the year". Probably more common though, how many teams have "kicked the date" (dd/mm format)?

Last I could manually find was Adelaide in Round 7, 2011 scoring 8.5 on 8/5. Shame it wasn't Round 11, could then say they scored 8.5 in R11 on 8/5/'11.

And how about Round-related scores? eg. 10.10 in Round 10?

Bear in mind that my ladders are calculated using match ratio, so in years where there was a bye, the following may not be strictly accurate.

1) 18 teams - once
16 teams - 6 times
14 teams - 5 times
12 teams - 52 times
10 teams - 11 times
9 teams - twice
8 teams - 41 times
6 teams - 5 times
4 teams - 8 times (including semi-finals)

2) NB figures relate only to rounds in which every game featured one team from the top half and one from the bottom half

2003 R2 - 5 of 8 were won by teams in the lower half of the ladder
1988 R12 - 5 of 7
1965 R18 - 4 of 6
1902 R12 - 3 of 4

St Kilda scored 8.5-53 on 8/5/1954. (That's the end of the 8/5 coincidences.)

10.10 has been scored 13 times in round 10.
First Melbourne in 1927 - last West Coast in 2009.

And the year has only been kicked twice 1912 and 2012.

Move this to Weird Football Games (Scoring) if you want more.

How much would you pay for a program that would find you these?:)
