Re: Post your stats questions here

This only lists total goals..

Were no records kept of behinds before 1970's ???

I was trying to find out which player had the best record goals v behinds in terms of %.

Thanks

Click on the name of the player and you will see their goal and behind tallies from 1987 on plus some from years before that.

50 and more years ago the neither the clubs nor any commercial organisation took and collected anything like the players stats of today. Newspapers always reported goal kickers (not always accurately) but players' behinds tallies were only reported if they were unusually high.

Re: Post your stats questions here

How many players have debuted in a draw? Luke Tapscott and Byron Sumner just joined the club.

Full list of MFC players to do it follows - how many from other teams?

John Coghlan - Round 9, 1898
Billy Irwin - Round 2, 1911
Harry Bruce, Harry Coy, Joe Flanagan, Clarrie Lethlean, John Lord, Enos Thomas, Ted Thomas, Percy Tulloh - Round 1, 1921
Art Beaumont - Round 5, 1929
Norm Matthews - Round 16, 1935
John Leahy - Round 12, 1961
Wayne Lamb - Round 7, 1992
Luke Tapscott - Round 1, 2011

Re: Post your stats questions here

How does this round compare in terms of closeness of scores? We had 2 blowouts, 2 'normal' wins and 4 by less that a goal. Total point differential was ~177. I assume this is in the ballpark of what normally happens in a round (though via a different spread than usual).

Is 4 games decided by less than 1 goal a record for round 1?

3 games decided by less than a goal and a draw in round 1 has never happened before.

There have been other rounds 1 with 3 matches decided by less than a goal.

round 1 1941 (3/6 matches)
round 1 1943 (3/5 matches)
round 1 2001 (3/8 matches)

Average winning margin of 13,624 VFL/AFL matches is 32.1 points, so 177 points differential makes round 1 2011 overall points differential lower than average.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Here's an interesting one I pondered today. What determined that Melbourne would take 8th spot and Sydney 9th spot when they are both on the same points and percentage?

Is it something as simple as the Dees being the home team?

Also, if the season were to finish today, who would progress through to the finals?
Cheers.

Aplhabetical order put mel on top of syd - if it were based on home ground than perhaps it would be sydney as they had to travel.

If it happened at the end of a season they would have to play off to determine the 8th spot.

Re: Post your stats questions here

This won't take very long to check, I just can't be bothered.

Has there been a team finish top four for five consecutive years in the modern era?

Define modern era.

Richmond did it 1971 - 1975 (5)

hawthorn did it 1982 - 1989 (8)

North 1974 - 1980 (7)

Collingwood 1969 - 1974 (6)

essendon 1981 - 1985 (5)

Geelog 1962 - 1969 ( 8)

Re: Post your stats questions here

What is the most games combined for two players who debuted in the same game on opposing teams?

Am interrupting my abstinence from this thread as this will be difficult, perhaps even impossible, for most others to answer definitively.

.....

Throw in their SANFL games they played before going to Victoria and that's another 200+ games

Kernahan and Bradley also debut in Rd 1 1986 for the SAME team so thats 600+ game total? I know that only opposite sides where asked. I'm pretty sure they debuted against each other in Rd 1 1981 in the SANFL at Footy Park before joing up at Carlton 5 years later,

Re: Post your stats questions here

Does anybody know the date, or score, when Carlton and Richmond played a "Grand Final rematch" in 1982? It was in October about three weeks after the Grand Final had been played on September 25. I do know Richmond won the "rematch".

From: http://www.blueseum.org

An exhibition game between the premiers of 1982 (Carlton and Richmond) was held at the Gabba as an official Demonstration sport of the XII Commonwealth Games. The ground was a sell out and patrons saw Richmond reverse the grand final result by defeating the Blues by 18 points, Richmond 28.16.184 defeated Carlton 26.10.166.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Whoever is in charge of Google News Archive for the Age must be a footy fan. Even in months during footy season where there's only a handful of papers they almost always have the Monday edition so you can see the footy reports.

Next stop, extend it past 1990 please.

How come it stops there?

Annoys me.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Does anyone know of a source for team interchange statistics?

I know that the pies and bombers had 130+ but I'd like to keep a tally for the year. For comparative analysis of injuries to interchanges, and the affect of losing players early in a game.

cheers in advance
