That would be a really difficult stat to collect. Not impossible, but would take some time, just go through wikipedia and change the year in the address bar and go through each game, for each year. I've seen double a few times, but not sure on triple.

I was wondering if any of the experts on this board has the statistics on teams that have exactly doubled or tripled their opponents' scores (e.g. 22.14-146 to 11.7-73 & 19.16-130 to 9.11-65; or 18.18-126 to 6.6-42)?

I would imagine that tripling scores would be rarer than doubling, but would be interested to see how often both come up.

Also, are there any cases of teams finishing with scores 4, 5, 6 or even more times higher than their opponents? I couldn't imagine it being common, but might have happened in the early years of the VFL when scoring was lower, and the league contained poorly performed teams such as St Kilda and University.

Any stats on this would be much appreciated.

I think Rogers Results posted something related to this recently.

From 14280 matches (to last night), exact doubling has happened 94 times (none this year), tripling 11 times (most recently Geelong v Freo 2004). The others are

4x - 9 occurrences, last NM v Co 1987
5x - 3 occurrences, last Ge v NM 1956
8x - 2 occurrences, Co v Ca 1898 & Sy v St 1901
10x - one occurrence, Ad v Fr 2009
11x - one occurrence, WB v Fi 1953
20x - one occurrence, Fi v Me 1899
169x - one occurrence, Ge v St 1899

Thanks Ron The Bear. I assumed these type of games would be few and far between. I was forgetting the Adelaide vs. Fremantle game from 2009, where the Crows outscored the Dockers 10-fold.

Wonder how many games have been played where a side's behind total at 1/4 time is their finishing total of behinds?

Freo yesterday..their scoring sequence was 0.2.2....4.2.26.....4.2.26....7.2.44

North in the 2007 QF wound up with 8.2.50 at the end of that match but i think they scored a point in the second half.

Fremantle's score is one of 27 1897-2013 where no behinds were scored after 1/4 time.

More info here.

Hawthorn have currently lost their last ten matches against Geelong, but have beaten Carlton and Melbourne the last ten times they have met each other.

What is the longest streak of games that a team has lost against a specific opponent, whilst having beaten another opponent the same number of times (or more) consecutively?

(I love thinking up ways to crash your databases)

List of matches (26) where an opponent's goal and behind tally was exactly doubled.
There have been two exact triples:
Essendon 12.12-84 v WB/Footscray 4.4-28 round 17, 1963.
Geelong 9.21-75 v Fremantle 3.7-25 round 20, 2004.
There have been two exact quadruples:
Melbourne 4.8-32 v Carlton 1.2-8 round 7, 1903
Collingwood 12.16-88 v Sydney/Sth. Melb 3.4-22 round 18, 1908
More on score factors here.
(beyond exact doubling of opponent's scores)

The only other example of 10s I can see is Melbourne 10 wins against North, whilst 0-9-1 v Collingwood, 1926-1932.

This is discounting the "current" streaks of Syd, Car & Coll against University.

Wow, that's actually really impressive. Good to know that Hawthorn are the most consistently only-slightly-worse-than-another-team football club in the history of the AFL! Great work, thanks!

174, since 1974.

127 within 40 games
86 within 30
54 within 20
16 within 10
Ok. How many since 1990 (reducing the amount of mature aged players debuting in the VFL/AFL)?

Or maybe 2000?

Hey, this could be a stupid question and could be in the wrong place, but what is the difference between a disposal and a possession? They have different stats for each under the AFL mobile app.

Without having access to the official definitions, a possession is when a player takes hold of the ball. A disposal is when he kicks or handpasses it.

Yeah thats what i thought but i was getting confused as to why the possession count was lower than the disposal one. I could understand if someone possessed the ball then got tackled and resulted in a throw in. 1 possession 0 disposal but Hawthorn had 347 disposals and 344 possies on the weekend. Richmond had 367 dis and 360 pos. Thoughts?

EDIT: Maybe kicking off the ground?

question: what's the % of players who win and % of players who lose, in their last game of footy?

given that all bar one of the finalists finish with a loss, and that it would be expected that 60%+ of the non finalists have a loss in the final round, the win % would be pretty low.

would be pushed back up a bit by all the players whose final games don't included finals.

would have to exclude players who have played in 2013.

i'm going with 35% wins.

i'm almost certain kicking off the ground isn't a possession (would make sense), and i have a feeling if you kick to yourself from the kick-in it's not a possession, even though it probably should be an uncontested possession.

Pretty sure when you play on from a kick-in, it does register as a disposal.

Excluding currently listed players:
28.65% win
70.52% loss
0.83% draw
