Pretty sure when you play on from a kick-in, it does register as a disposal.

definitely registers as a disposal, but i reckon it doesn't register as an uncontested or contested possession.

i'm sure i read that on here somewhere.

someone else will know for sure.

it's really the only way to explain how you could have less possessions than disposals.

Effective kick off the ground?

almost certain that is not a possession.

there would have to be other ways to have a disposal without a possession.

when you think in a game every time a bloke gets tackled resulting in a ball up or free, takes possession but goes over the boundary line or through the behind line. these are all times that a possession is being record with no disposal to go alongside it. there are a lot more of these than kicks off the ground in a game.

Kinda ties back to my question before about kick-outs from a behind...

That if effective kicks off the ground are marked, or go through for a goal, then how can they not be counted as kicks? Conversely, how can a goal be kicked or a mark taken from something that isn't noted as a kick?

they are counted as kicks. but they aren't counted as a possession (we are pretty sure) because no one actually takes possession of the ball before they kick it.

Disposals without registering a possession:
  • Ground Kicks
  • Disposals after playing on from a kick-in
  • Disposals after an opposition out on the full
  • Disposals after taking advantage from a teammate's free kick

as meatloaf said 2 out of 4 ain't bad.

out of interest what are instances of getting a possession state but no disposal?

- getting tackled and either a free kick or ball up
- taking possession and going over the boundary or behind line?

any others?

- reversed free kick
- free downfield off the ball
- siren sounds

In last night's game between Geelong and Hawthorn there was a kick from James Podsiadsly which ricocheted off a team mate and then landed in the arms of another team mate up the field who was able to kick the ball forward. Would this fluky occurrence count as an effective kick or possession?

Lots of subjective judgements in these counts with most of the counts near to meaningless in isolation. In the above example what happened after the kick forward?

You could argue that the only really "effective" kick or possession is one that results in or leads directly to a score or in the case of possessions directly prevents an opposition score.

There may be some actual statistical analysis going on with these count's but the counts on their own as presented to the football-following public are largely tripe.

Joel Selwood is due to play his 150th game this weekend against Melbourne. In his preceding 149 games, Geelong have won 123 of them, for a 82.5% winning record.

Surely this would have to be a record for someone to have played 150 games, and if not, which player holds the record?
