SJ knocking on Bomber's door asking to play, apparently.

Johnson only one week away
GEELONG coach Mark Thompson says forward Steve Johnson could be back as early as next week if the Cats lose to the Bulldogs in the second qualifying final on Saturday.

Johnson has just had surgery on his troublesome hip adductor after consulting a Tasmanian specialist.

Thompson said Johnson was most likely to miss this week, but could be available after that.

"He's already knocked on my door, asking if he can play, but we probably won't play him this week," Thompson said.

"He's a very good chance to play next week, which is remarkable, I know, and you probably won't believe me, but that's the truth."

If this week's good news doesn't get the boys pumped, I'm not sure what will!
Otto, Kelly and Harls back and in reasonable form, Chapman likely to return, Hawkins and Mooney in form and kicking straight, Varcoe a possibility, and SJ a strong possibility for our next final after Doggies!

Stevie could beg and they still wouldn't play him this week. To take the field 8 days after an op is to much of a risk in my opinion.

I'm going to the finals with the belief of SJ's gone; the way it reads it's a 3 week recovery at best. Clears my mindset of wishful thinking, but if he's right too go come pre-lim >> Grand final...it'll be a biig plus for the cats if indeed we get that far. Atm SJ does'nt come into my thoughts.

You can't go into a final thinking that something special will get you over the line.

That is a quote from James Kelly. In my interpretation of the "something special" is Steve Johnson. We can't go in to the finals (if he plays) expecting him to win it for us.

I'm 100% in agreement with that ... pretty much what I tried to say in another post although some did'nt agree with me having an opinion.

If he plays it's a bonus and make no mistake, Geelong are still playing "funny buggers" on SJ and he won't get the full prognosis and report / clearance from the specialist for another week. It's finals time .... whatever games get played during the season on injuries with Ottens etc you can multiply by 10 !!!

I think everything has gone well, but I'm not convinced from speaking with others that he will either play / or have an impact in the next 4 weeks. The coach said in the press conference that they won't make the same mistake as 2008 taking in injured players .... we might see that statement tested in the next few weeks.

Isn't it more a case of you not liking others, well let's be frank, me, querying your opinion, which is all that happened, and nothing to do with disagreeing with you having that opinion.

Fully concur with Bigant's sentiments by the way.

Seriously? Moving freely?
Physio that works with Dr. Pritchard has come over to Geelong and SJ is running with no pain and feeling great. Wouldn't suggest he will play this week, but at this stage next week is a distinct possibility (if we have to play next week).

However, he's only played one game since then – round 21 – and Thompson wouldn't be drawn on his chances of playing, but said the team might look to roll the dice a little.

That is referring to Chappy not Stevie J but does show that they are willing to look past their previous statements and play players that they are not sure on. Even though i still don't believe Chappy is injured.

That's awesome. CHeers Vegas.

Absolutely. If this policy is taken out we could miss more than just Chappy and SJ. Half the Hawthorn team took injections before the GF?

Not a problem. I might add that this is coming from a source that was (like myself) incredibly skeptical about Johnson being right to come back at all, so this is very positive news.

I have a funny feeling that how SteveJ is now can't get anyworse and he is as good as it will get....50% 60% 70% who knows

Anyway I think he'll play this week....like an ace from the pack :thumbsu:

No ... a bit more of a veiled swipe at some of my mail I think, but I'm sure we're both big and ugly enough to move on and stay focused on the important issues.

Cheers Vegas, it is always good to hear news which comes from inside the club...... especially when it is good news. :D

I saw it as a pop at myself over our discussion in the "History Repeating Itself?" thread, apologies if that assumption was incorect, and yep, it's done and dusted as far as I'm concerned, much bigger chickens to fry over the next few days/weeks.

I'll let the "big and ugly" crack pass, mainly because it's correct. :)

The Cat's policy on playing injured players in Finals is a good one but there will be players who are jabbed up and run a risk of breaking down.
The Premiership will be won by the team that desires it the most and that has the best talent and structure to back it up on the day.
Hawthorn played injured last year and look what happened.
Can you imagine the heat on Clarko re playing Croad and his subsequent breakdown if we'd have snuck over the line?
Chappy is worth a risk if he's moving freely as is SJ as they are just to important to leave out.
We lost last year because Hawthorn wanted it more on the day and handled the pressure better.
Things will be different this year.

In '07 Chappy was struggling with OP.
Bomber was as crook as a dog all week.
Moons had the split webbing in his hand.

Yeah definitely! There would have been big question marks. Particularly since he may not play again

But we had to carry Chapman, Varcoe, Kelly and Stokes injured. Plus Harley got knocked out late in the first half. So Hawks only had to carry Croad who they got 1 good half out of. We had to carry 5 players

I think the rule is you can take 1 or 2 players in who are a bit proppy but they have to be really good players. Taking any more than 2 injured players into a GF is asking for trouble - especially if there are fit guys on the emergency list

the whole 'if it was finals he/they could have played' is the problem. If a player ain't right, they ain't right, doesn't matter what game it is, either they can play and contribute or they can't. What day of the year it is should have ZERO bearing.
