My mate owns a farm and we have been considering stocking his dam with fish. This dam isn't being used at all its just holding water for no use. The farm is in strath creek with is about an hour and a half north of melbourne between benella and bendigo i think.

Has anyone done this before?

I have a few questions can people please help

What kind of fish should i stock?

Can i mix yabbies and fish in the same dam?

Neither of us have fished before so would 25 fish be enough because from what i have read that is the recomended amount of fish for the size of his dam?

If it is needed to expanded how big would u recomend?

What kind of cost would i be looking at for the dam expansion?

What kind of cost would i be looking at to buy the fingerlings?

Would the fish need to be replaced or would a natural ecosystem emerge and they would just keep rebreeding?

What licences would i need to obtain to complete this task?

The fishing board might be of more help but i'll see what i can answer.

How big is the dam is the first question?

But yabbies in for sure, in a year or two you will have heaps in there and you can fish them out and yabbie goodness (way better than Lobster, at a fraction of the cost).

Put native fish in the dam, Perch for sure, and some Bass as well.
Maybe a catfish or two for some variety.

And yeah i'm pretty sure you would need to apply to the fisheries people about stocking a dam with fish.

Really if you have no idea about basic aquaculture principles you shouldn't bother wasting your time.

Basically, if you don't know much about the fish you want, their biology, local conditions and water quality you will waste time and money.
