Coach Stuart Dew - Where is the scrutiny?

He seems the type that's once you are written off you are for good. Fiorini, brodie, wright, lyons, how they haven't been getting games in those sides is beyond me.
They need some old experienced guys with success like burgoyne, mundy, people like that to help shape the on-field culture.

Player retention is a vicious cycle.

If you can't retain players you can't win.
If you can't win you can't retain players.
We will finish stone cold last with just a solitary win to date, yet 4 of our kids who are in our best 22 have just re-signed in the last week when they could have chosen not to.

So retention is not just about wins. (Player driven) culture has a huge influence on clubs.

The suns have tried over recent years to recruit older guys who are actually good; Burgoyne, Betts, Kennedy (WCE)

The fact is the suns can't get anyone good up here, we get fringe players who want more game time. Prime example is we are looking at Chol & CCJ apparently.

I've also smelt something rotten, i don't usually listen to much Damien Barrett but on Triple M; he is never a fan of the suns because we are a team that doesn't know how to win against teams above them. We also can't even win games at metricon. Also labels us predictable which i find fair, beating Hawks doesn't feel as good as a win against Sydney or Collingwood because we are expected to win those games. Pissed off we dropped games against Adelaide, Carlton, St Kilda & Fremantle when we could of won 1-2 of them but ended up 0/4

We fielded 11/23 blokes under 50 games against Fremantle, our spine was crap and Sean Darcy murdered us.

Literally can see Port (Like everyone else) beating us at least 30+, we never play well against Port but we are never closing the margain why is that? Port are suppose to have a slow midfield compared to everyone else, how do we get destroyed every time

Would Bucks take the Gold Coast job as Dew’s successor? Obviously if Buckley plays his cards right with whatever media gig comes next / in 2022 he may have a bigger or better club on the table but as a project, and the chance to mould a team in his image with almost zero fan or media scrutiny, Gold Coast might actually be a perfect fit?
Bucks got kids at school in Melbourne, no to GC

13 players under 50 games tonight. This is the reality most weeks. All the hopes and wishes in the world won't make up for the lack of preseasons. Stay the course and like magic Stewie Dew will become the next coach like Hinkley, Goodwin, Hardwick, Thompson who were terrible until they were the best.

Not sure if Kenny is the appropriate example there

The problems don’t begin and end with Dew. As a club they have an incredible ability to collapse after some bright/competitive starts. Their W-L over the past 5 years:

4-3 to 5-11-1 in 2020
3-1 to 3-19 in 2019
3-2 to 4-18 in 2018
6-8 to 6-16 in 2017
3-0 to 6-16 in 2016

So what does that mean? Unfit? Can't run out the season? That's still on the coach and fitness staff.

Sure they've had injuries to key players, but who hasn't.

Right now only witts is injured, no excuses from us. Poorly coached and managed right now

My best theory is that Dew designs teams to go hard as possible early on but hasn't quite been able to execute that for a whole season and lack the class to maintain the rage early.

Their class issues is a coaching problem though. I dunno if Dew is the problem but at a minimum they should be targeting a top-line assistant akin to what Melbourne and Richmond did.
AFL f’ed up by just giving them more picks as opposed to more soft cap money for coaching or more access to mature players. Repeated the same issues it was very short sighted.
I do agree with this in theory, but they were able to recruit plenty of mature aged players. They just chose the wrong ones (or were unable to get the right ones).

They probably needed a soft cap increase or a marquee fund.

Bucks or Clarko no dramas, time to go. Pay him out, or at least make Touk captain coach
Clarko would obviously be the dream, but I think he's staying.

Buckley is an interesting one. He is at least the upmost professional so would be able to shape a culture better than Dew can. But equally I've never been convinced about him as a tactician and his ability to get the best out of his players hasn't been the most consistent. Still a lot of his problems at Collingwood were more back office related so it might not be the worst option. I don't think another rookie would be the right approach unless you pair him with an experienced top-line assistant and I think Lyon would be a shitty fit up where the Suns are at as a club.

Could you take a look at Brad Scott maybe? His problem was that a lot of the talent under his watch didn't develop as much as hoped, but Gold Coast's talent base is probably a bit higher than North's in the early 2010's so it might be more successful.

How many coaches would still be employed with a 16-1-57 record 3.5 years in. Yet another performance with pressure that resembled witches hats and yet there will be little to no scrutiny put on him in part because they have no real fan base and being up on the Gold Coast they are far enough away from the main AFL media to warrant talking about.

Yeah most definitely any of them are good candidates, we need a senior coach who’s had a crack before. Boys aren’t playing for him, if we continue with dew we’ll lose every game for the rest of the year.

No game plan and the boys just playing for stats not for each other besides Touk and Powell

I was just saying the same thing to my wife.
I wouldnt be surprised if Buckley if Buckley gets a tap on the shoulder by the AFL. Not sure he will go after his marriage separation and leaving his kids behind.

Rather than Brad Scott, I think Chris Scott would be the other option for the AFL.
Ex-Lions premiership player, and has been more successful as a coach than his brother.

Whichever way it go, the AFL will have their fingerprints all over it and will pay the big $$ to get the coach they want up there

I don't think it's the coach. Just no spirit at the club. GWS managed to create a team that at least looks like it gives a shit.

I'm not sure what the solution is. Problems run much deeper than just the coach.
