Coach Stuart Dew - Where is the scrutiny?

I have made the odd Dew fat joke, it is a bit of fun, but I think there are some really nasty posts here attacking him because of his weight.

He has played 206 games of AFL football and won two premierships, what have you achieved in your life at the highest level to fob him off?

He is no longer a professional athlete, he made a lot of sacrifices to play at the highest level and he is entitled to enjoy his life afterwards. I'd like to see him lose a bit of weight for his own health but he knows what it takes to make it at the highest level because he has done it himself.

Suns have come a long way after the club being ran into the dirt. I don't like all the charity they have received, I think there should be a level playing field and there isn't. But I think it is sad people are attacking him when most of their promising players are still very young kids.

Their young players look very slick, but every time I watch a Gold Coast game it looks and feels like a completely different team.

Their best players are guys like Ellis and Greenwood, it’s no wonder they just can’t compete in most game. Once Rowell/Anderson/King/Luko/Rankine hit their mid 20’s they’ll be a dominant team.

Seen Miller transition into a gun mid, Collins and Ballard are very high calibre defenders. Swallow is a solid mid.

There’s nothing sticking out that’s terrible about them, there’s just slightly defective in a few areas. Reckon they need to give Dew a few years still.

Serious question: What sort of damage did he do to the club beyond just being a poor coach? Like Brendan Bolton may not have been a good coach at Carlton but it's not like tanked the club or anything.

Graham, Ballard, Smith, Burgess, King might be one of the worst spines of talls you're likely to see.

They desperately miss Collins, Witts and even Day.

Witts in particular gave them an advantage at stoppages which sets them up. Collins is solid and makes Ballard's job easier. Ballard's a great talent but he should be the 3rd tall interceptor or at least have a 3rd tall with some defensive chops alongside him.

King should have an experienced tall alongside him to take the load off. Burgess is actually going ok but he's a fair way down the depth chart at most clubs.

Their midfield has a number of decent players and will only get stronger, it certainly shouldn't be getting out worked or beat up, but I don't think it is. They dominated general play against Freo in the first half today. The second quarter was a 1 goal 2 to Freo to 0.5 to the Suns.

If King is quiet and Rankine can't get space they really don't trouble a lot of teams. So with a few bad set shots they play a dominant quarter and can't even get a goal. Freo get the momentum after 3/4 time and put the game away.

If there was one criticism of Dew it is they that move the ball with a decent tempo but not with much risk. Overall that's probably a good thing. That's how the best teams play. The idea that good teams are biting off low risk kicks isn't really true. But they have Luko, Powell and Bowes off half back and the run of Markov. They can probably risk a bit more counter attack, be it via risky kicks or set the runners off.

Had every player on the list worth anything staring at the exit. Pushed player welfare officers out the door because “that’s what the coaches are there for…” There are others that deserve a fair amount of blame but handing the keys to that incompetent arse almost destroyed the club.

Somehow managed to get employed and swiftly fired as an assistant coach at Essendon afterwards.

Had a fair hand in trashing the list: traded Stef Martin to Brisbane for a packet of twisties, pissed off Brent Moloney who left under Free Agency (we lost Jared Rivers in the same year to your mob), recruited turds (Byrnes, Gillies, Rodan), apparently was the one who wanted Toumpas instead of Wines. Arguably damaged a few careers too: not sure Jack Grimes & Jack Trengove should have been made captain.

It takes a while to recover from being that bad- you can't attract A-grade free agents and you have to take a risks at the trade table that can hurt you if they don't pay off.

Holman- tries his heart out. Not afl quality.
Smith- been a battler for years.
Markov- was just depth at richmond.
Burgess- should just be depth.

Midfield needs a boost. Barely even saw Anderson in there today. He should be seeing centre clearances - not Holman.

On top of that - King needs aerial assistance ASAP.

Yeah their record in general in the second half of the season is awful. They are a much more competitive side than they used to be, but it has taken a long long time to get consistent effort out of them. Now they need to improve the second halves of their seasons. Agree that 0 or 1 wins would see the fat man in trouble.

The second quarter between Fremantle and Gold Coast yesterday was one of the worst quarters of football I have seen.

I think the Gold Coast have a poor culture where they just accept defeat as normality. Until a really big name coach likes Alastair Clarkson takes over there - like Ron Barassi did with the Swans in the early 1990s - nothing will change.

(And yes I know at the time Barassi didn't do a lot of the coaching - Damian Drum did - it was Barassi's presence and reputation, which helped a lot).

Would Bucks take the Gold Coast job as Dew’s successor? Obviously if Buckley plays his cards right with whatever media gig comes next / in 2022 he may have a bigger or better club on the table but as a project, and the chance to mould a team in his image with almost zero fan or media scrutiny, Gold Coast might actually be a perfect fit?
