I think starting next year we should have a annual Stynes/Whitten cup when the dogs and dees play with a medal to the BOG celebrating the two champions of our clubs that were taken away from us too early by that cruel aweful disease.

Thoughts and ideas?

I have put the same thread on the dogs board but would like to hear what Melbourne supporters think of the idea. I am going to write a email suggesting the idea to the dogs admin.

Sounds like a brilliant idea to me. I think it would be fitting and a game to look forward to each year to celebrate their lives.

You have my vote. See if you can get in touch with the clubs somehow with the idea to gauge interest. :thumbsu:

I like the idea.

The last time I remember this kind of adoration towards an ex football player & sense of loss not only to the game but people in general was Ted Whitten.

Edit: As mentioned this is the type of thing that should be put to the club if its not in their minds already.

Really great idea bulldogrob, i think you are right in saying how they both stand in each clubs history and memory. Make it one of those big games, replay highlights, have the medal, and trophy.

Also would be good to allow reach and the ted whitten foundations to raise funds and awareness each year ect.

Definately suggest it to both clubs imo.

I have a contact or two within the club I can pass this on to if required.

Friends in high places hey Crimson haha

I think it is definitely a game which can be built upon for both clubs, and with us playing the WB this year i wouldnt be surprised if something will be in the works for the future. Or atleast seems like a natural progression for the game and rivalry.

No, just contacts that I'm confident would take this higher. ;)

Agree. Seeing we have played the breast cancer round against the dogs the last two years a round that would honour both men & promote awareness would be perfect.

I like it, great idea.

That said, there are a number of these 'trophy' games going around these days, possibly so many that adding another (although the cause is very worthy) wouldn't make much of a splash.

I think we only really have the Queens birthday atm, and cant think of the dogs main game?

If we make this the "new" breast cancer day maybe, promoting that which is close to Ted Whitten, and Jim it could be a great day for even neutral supporters?

I was thinking more of the 'police' game that (I think) the Hawks v Dogs game is every year... there are a couple of others, a Kokoda one possibly. The Dreamtime game is another. Obviously ANZAC Day is far above all of those in terms of meaning and significance.

But yeah agree with the breast cancer idea.

Police game is Hawks vs Saints.

I remember dogs and pies playing for the Bob Rose cup. Don't know if that still runs.

Sounds like a great idea!

The only other sort of game we do is against Richmond for the Berry Street cup? Unless we don't do that anymore.

Don't want to be a wet blanket, but usually the trophy would be named after someone involved at both clubs. For example, Bulldogs play Collingwood for the Bob Rose Cup.

Having said that, there's the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (Aust v India in Tests). But footy is just not cricket.

Possibly the two greatest loved footballers of all time.

We play WCE for the Jackovich cup, all for this if it isn't just a token.

Good Friday would be great.

Yeah, this is an idea with a shedload of potential. As is the suggestion talked about before to do with matches between us and the Tigers.

Not as far as I know, but yeah, as I say, it'd also be great if another version of that with Richmond could happen again too. If both of these two ideas came about, it'd benefit the club substantially.

I like the idea, but not to focus just on breast cancer, but to focus on cancer in general.

It would be great if we could fund-raise some money for the Reach foundation and also the EJ Whitten Prostrate Cancer fund. As we are both struggling clubs, I am not sure either of us could donate the gate proceeds, but perhaps we can do something extra on the day.

Would be great if we got if for Easter Friday, but I think that is just wistful thinking.....:(

Simon got back to me today, looks like something could be planned

Hi Robert

Thank you for your feedback, very much appreciate your suggestions.

As you would be aware, we currently have a number of “Cups, Trophies & Medals” that we play for, including:

· Barker-Whitten Challenge Plate (St Kilda)

· EJ Whiten Cup (Essendon)

· Robert Rose Cup & Sutton-Rose Medal (Collingwood)

I can tell you we are in discussions with Melbourne in relation to exploring an ongoing tribute and hope to come to an arrangement in the not too distant future.

I am also pleased to advise you that we placed a Condolence Book at our reception area in the weeks leading up to yesterday and presented it to Don McLardy as a token of our respect for Jim Stynes and all that he has done for football and the wider community.

Thanks again for your suggestion Robert which we will continue to progress with the Melbourne Football Club.

Kind regards

Simon Garlick
Chief Executive
