Collingwood is a workman like club and always has been and with no real standout superstars in the team at the moment i thought i'd ask who you think, or hope, will be our next Buckley. I know some of you will say Dane Swan is a star but i would class him as an elite player rather than a standout superstar, his kicking is still very average. Your thoughts?

I would hope it is Pendles but i have a nagging suspicion he doesn't have the desire the take the game on and do things off his own boot rather he does the team thing instead of just having a crack. Occasionally i've noticed he becomes a little unsure running into goal and would much rather hand off then just take the kick which is odd cause he is all class. Maybe its just me....he's my favorite player i would just like to see him take a little more responsability when its time for someone to lift there game.

Peter Mackenna......

Even had a hit single if I recall.

Smile all the while, smile all the while, sing a song and leave your troubles far behind... I may not be too educated but this is one thing I have stated, you know I like to smile all the while... smile

He was the Beatles man.. the floggers and torn up paper.. the women literally screaming every time he went near the ball.. it was electrifying.. footy is shit now compared to those days

I'd say Pendles for sure. In opposition to the idea that he doesn't take the game by the scruff of the neck is the fact that he has equal influence without doing that. He doesn't do the team things because he is to P.C it is a matter of what is the best thing to do at the time. He puts the team in a better position almost every time he touches the ball. He has good impact with every touch. Someone similar is Simon Black who I'd rate as an out and out superstar and elite player.

The thing that is hard about this is the fact that repuatation and media hype etc has just as much impact in who are acknowledge as superstars. The bigger the profile the less you have to do to be seen as a superstar. In that way marketability and being a player who draws a crowd are almost equal to playing ability when making a "superstar" whilst those things are good for a club they have no impact in winning matches.

There's a lot of psychological profiling of potential players now which is a good thing in some respects, but then who might not have played: Tony Lockett, Kevin Sheedy, Carl Dietrich, Gary Ablett Senior, Mozart. The PR stuff now and the commentary by players is completely sterile.

I'd like to hear one player when being praised by a commentator say "yeah, i was pretty awesome out there" and then kiss his biceps like Randy the Machoman Savage.

No Georgie Bests, Maradona's or crutch spearing Locketts, just a lot of "credit to the boys". zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Could say the about Daisy where has not Massive Numbers but Can do some Wicked things some times but with the Media and Collingwood Hyping him up that makes him a Superstar

In a sense, his profile is certainly greater then his output. There are a number of more consistant players who have greater impacts with a much smaller profile, the likes of Daniel Cross for example. Someone like Pendleberry is unlikely to get the respect he deserve (unless of course he leads us to a premiership or wins a brownlow) because what he does is very easy to underestimate both A) how difficult it is and B) how important it is.

Excelent point shawthing09. I hope Pendles does become a simon black who is a absolute gun.

Wash your mouth out with soap.

I don't think we have anyone of Buckley's calibre on the list. A few of them have the potential to become champions (Trav, Heater, Pendles, Thomas), but that would still be a notch below Buckley IMO.

(I'm not considering the first-year players.)

I think that's just the way you perceive him. Because he's so elusive, it makes him look unsure and a little lost at times but he just has more time to make a decision than most.

I reckon Pendlebury will be a star player, but like Swan won't quiet be that superstar player (think Bucks, Hird, etc). Hope to be proven wrong though.

No one will ever match or over take Bucks.
No disrespect to the great man, but i hope someone does match or overtake the BUCKS. If not the future (next 50years) could be quite bleak considering the great man never tasted the ultimate success. And even if they do, BUCKS is and will be Mr Collingwood for some time yet!!! You just gotta love the bloke!!!

Didak is a star, and with a bit more time in the middle could become one of the top 20 players in the comp. Pendles is a gun and my favourite player has to be Daisy, but none of these compare to Buckley. Buckley will be almost impossible to replace.

No i understand and am well aware that he has more time then others when it comes to decision making....i just believe it may be the reason why he would much rather do the team thing every time rather then show his true class and have a crack...i'm referring more so to his inside fifty work. When he gathered the ball a few times this year i noticed it in the west coast game he would think goal then look to pass off get into a little trouble ease through that then look to pass off before finally taking the responsibility himself and finish off. I never said he looked unsure he looks just as confident as anyone else his mind just ticks over a little too fast and with the time he gets its not always the right thing despite being the team thing...hope that makes sense....lol

Played decent level Rep Basketball with 2 Guys exactly the same . One even had the nickname Softy.
When they caught the ball, time seemed to slow down.
Pendles or Dale will end up Elite for mine.
