True, and I'm certainly no expert...

I've watched the Collingwood game, and I just think they were off... some of that was down to us, but some of it was just seemed like they were underdone. Their pressure was off, their connections were off, even their hand passing and kicking was off. We played well, but nothing like the way we're playing now... our pressure was up and down.

I've also watched the Suns game, and they were making the exuberant youth mistakes that we were a year or two ago. The longer the game went, the better we got (which seems to be a theme at this point) but again, our pressure was up and down. There was no Rampe in this game, and Blakey really stood up... so did Roberts, and it was McCartin's first game back and he was solid as a rock!

That's not to put us down, I think we have got better as the season progressed and I absolutely love watching us play.

Re-watching these early games has shown me how much they are training and developing McDonald and Amartey (and McLean to a lesser extent) during games, alternating their roles, having them play high on the F50, then back in the square; one marking, the other covering/blocking for them. Same with Wicks and Hayward... and Papley has certainly been banged up for a considerable part of the season. The backs have played without Rampe, without McCartin, with Francis and Campbell playing roles as required, with Lloyd, Fox and McInerney playing roles down back as and when required, with only Melican playing the same role week in and week out. Obviouly, the same can be said of our mids... The commentators talk about tweaking the team to ensure that we are unpredictable in the back half of the season, but it seems to me, they obviously haven't really been watching, as it appears we've been doing that the whole season. Even Grundy plays two roles at all times, ruck and mid...

It seems astounding to me that we are playing so well, and yet every game is a training and development session. My respect for the coaching group and the players has ratcheted up another few notches, and I feel fairly certain that regardless of injury, our style (game plan) will hold up.

caesar88, I get that its a personal preference, but the Collingwood game is a hard for me to get excited about. If we beat them up in round 22, then I'll be ecstatic, but the round 1 game, I just though they looked off. The Carlton game, I'm on board with as our best game of the season, although they had injuries during the game and played it out short manned. I loved the way we continued to put the foot on the gas all the way to the end (which has been a solid feature of our game this year!).

This is our run home, with the bolded being those currently in the 8; and those in red being the teams that are likely to test us, and if they play well enough on the day, stand a chance of beating us. Mind you, I'm not expecting to lose any of these games... I just think these teams could on their day, with Freemantle and Brisbane having the game plans most likely to upset ours. caesar88, what do you think?

Adelaide, GWS, Freemantle, St Kilda, North, Brisbane, Bulldogs, Port, Collingwood, Essendon, Adelaide.

EDIT: Bloody hell, I didn't this post was so long... sorry all... I was just kind of thinking and typing... :embarrassedv1:
Not too long. A good read.
Terrific observation about changes within the games. I love how all three of our talls can feed a runner into an open goal with ridiculous accuracy. I don't know any other team with that skill level.
Of the games to go IF we bring our best or close only Pies or Brisbane are a serious threat. Key injuries or drinking our bathwater could change that in an instant of course.
I think those two games will tell us where we are at.

I accept your apology Kirkswan. I don't like long posts but as long as you know not to do it again...

Lol! The reason I don't like half your posts is that i don't read them... anything over two or three paragraphs I give up on before I start... so it was very hypocritical of me to write a bloody essay! The Swans board is so busy these days that it seems like it takes me a few hours to get through it all... not that I'm complaining! I still love it, just have much less time...

You don't think Freemantle have a chance? I thought that while it was clearly an off day for them (especially kicking wise), they played really well against us... I have no expectation of beating them by 4-5 games in a few weeks. Whereas, I'm quite comfortable that we'd have to have an off day, and Collingwood play out of their skins, to beat us. I recognise they're improving, but I haven't thought by that much! Their run home is about the same level of difficulty as ours, but playing them in round 22 is a bonus in my view... a nice little practice run before the finals!

I'm pretty sure the memory of 2022 will solve the bathwater drinking issue, so for me injuries could be an issue... but, and it's a fairly big but for me, our boys are the fittest team in the comp, evidenced by the way we play out our games.

Dockers at home on a Saturday afternoon in front of a full SCG? Can't see it. Pies also at home. Agree about the tune-up. Actually more worried about the Lions at the Gabba if they have a run going.
Sadly fitness doesn't prevent injuries. 🤞🤞🤞
We still need to work on our starts so we don't have to flog ourselves. I hope we rest any with niggles.

I didn't read this, can someone summarize it for me?

This morning I watched the interview with Papley as he arrived at Adelaide airport. He's not normally the most polished media performer, and often likes to play the joker. But I was taken by a) how articulate he was; and b) how he talked about the challenge ahead for the remainder of the season.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but for Papley to be that polished and coherent talking about where the team's focus is gave me a lot of confidence that the importance of steady-as-she-goes has been well drilled into the whole team.

Absolutely! They look, play and speak like a very well drilled team that has a heap of confidence in what they are doing.

To be honest, their poor starts give me more confidence in them, than if they were playing perfect full games. It's clear that they and the coaching staff have tangible issues that they are working on, while still moving all the magnets around the board and changing up roles to ensure continued flexibility, and build defence mechanisms for injury (i.e. slipping from one role to another to seamlessly cover for an injured mate). I've been re-watching the whole season (thanks caesar88) and I'm fairly sure that is one of the things they have been working on, covering for injury during games and being as flexible as possible to cover for extended outs. So as long as it's not Grundy, or a run of four or five injuries, I'm still fairly confident.

But I must admit, my mindset is to squeeze every second of joy out of this season! I'll believe in them right up until the end, and you won't find screaming danger game or what if! The only what if I'm interested in, is the 'what if this is the beginning of a dynasty?'

4 games clear inc. % and a look at our run home. I see potential 50/50s vs GWS, Lions and Port. Let’s say we lose all those, still minor premiers.

So, what I want to see now is player management so that we peak for the finals. That doesn’t mean just resting and rotation. It means experimentation and just maybe getting some games into those players outside our best 23 just in case injuries hit.

The priorities I see are:
  • Get Mills match fit and strengthening our backline, straight into the team
  • Get Parker some match time in case Adams gets injured - so a bit of rotation
  • If Hamling really is on fire, try him out as a forward and maybe backline. I mean we have Norf and Saints after all.
  • Derisk soft tissue injuries for our mids. Yes, maybe Heens, Gulden and Warner have some rotation to manage their workload. I remain concerned that Gulden is near 100% TOG. Also, any player at the hint of a niggle gets rotated or managed.
  • a few weeks out from finals, modified weights / fitness program to have the fit and peaking for finals

I know this may upset team balance but we are no longer playing for home and away, let other teams grind that out in their weekly elimination finals in the logjam. we are playing a different game and that is to peak for finals.

I like fast players.

Am I the only one who thinks we can get even better?

Every other team when they realise we still have the likes of Mills, Parker and Fox to come back

Not necessarily agreeing with the specifics but the general thought is good. Can't go overboard because you risk losing the chemistry. Pretty sure the boffins can manage training loads etc to maximise fitness while mimising risk of soft tissue injury. I hope anyone who needs a week off gets one, especially vs Norf or Saints. I'd like to see Ladhams get a run to see if he can discipline himself but both those teams have good rucks. Just don't want to see unfit players on the field.

I'm just hypothesising here, I'm probably way off, but I wonder if other teams' inability to secure a top 2/4 spot as they keep choking away winnable games is in part, because of our domination of the season?

I think winning a game requires a certain level of confidence and belief that as a team, we are good enough, we can win the flag this year, etc.

But I wonder if that belief gets shaken and hard to muster every week when on a sub-conscious level, in the back of your mind you're thinking... we are miles off the best side.

Nah thats extremely unlikely what they would be trying to avoid is finishing 4th and a trip to the SCG first week, finish 2nd or 3rd for a Carlton/Collingwood/Essendon would mean they wouldnt have to leave Melbourne at all.

as the ladder stands now

Sooner or later we will need to start thinking about resting players. We can afford to lose 4 games out of 10 and still finish top 4. Our performances will be for nothing if we don't win the flag.

Grundy, Heeney, Gulden, Warner are all a massive part of our success. I suspect after Freo we will give Grundy a rest along with minimising midfield minutes for the other 3
