Had a win against quenbeyan today in the half a game practice match by a goal in very hot conditions at quenbeyan. Voguels stood out for me and looks impressive. Other swans players were potter, willougby and mark powell (who looked ordinary - scrabber kicks - seems to have gone backwards from his debut year in which i was actually impressed by him!!!).

May have been other swans listed players thre but need to take your player list and their numbers next week - with the swans reserves in canberra again - if i get along as I dont know them that well ....

Paul Roos wasnt there, Longmire looked in charge, assisted by Jonas and the seagull Allison amongst others ....

Thewlis is no longer with the club and is now on the Roos rookie list. I take you meant player who wore number 38 and that is Luke Vogels for us.

Well if you do, make sure you give us here a report if possible. We should be giving a few of our senior players who have miss most of the pre season a game next week (Goodes and Davis for starters).

Thanks for the update

Yep that would be it - looked like he was a reasonable size/good mover/nice skills. I'll see what I can do, wasnt a bad day at the footy. Swannies play Wagga and Eastlake next Saturday at Queanbeyan again I believe.

Impressed me in our Wizard Cup Match up forward. I believe he could be of value in the future as a solid back up for Hall (just not as good)

What about top up players ?

I assume they would draw these from the local compeitions within NSW and the ACT. We should possibly have the same policy as used by the Brisbane Lions where they get the talened juniors in Queensland to play as top up players.

Had a look again on Saturday. Once again impressed by Vogues - he is the goods. Not sure on the composition of the team for round 1 but wouldnt be out of his depth imo. Forward or back!!!!!!!!!!

Reggie was useless again - cant see afl potential there!

Blokes wearing 2, 20, 37 went ok!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4, 28 tireless workers!!!!!!!

40, 29 - ordinary!!!!!!!!!!!

41 - stick to basketball!!!!!!!!!!!!

33, 34, 36 did some ok things!!!!!

46 (uninterested???), 49 - looked out of depth!!!!!!

7 - cant kick over the jam tin!!!!!!!!!!

Sydney makes a point
By Scott Walsh Australian football
Sunday, 20 March 2005

A SLEW of Sydney AFL stars showed they were ripe for selection in the Swans' season opener against Hawthorn next week, butchering Eastlake by 117 points yesterday.

Bursting with talent in the form of Brownlow medallist Adam Goodes, Nick Davis, Ben Mathews, Jared Crouch and Jason Saddington, the Swans reserves ran the Demons ragged, refusing to concede even a behind in what became a 50-minute slaughter at Queanbeyan's Margaret Donoghoe Oval.

Luke Ablett kicked five goals from half-forward, Goodes kicked two and Davis three as they ran rings around Eastlake, winning 18.9 (117) to no score in the final minor-round game of AFL Canberra's preseason competition.

The Swans had earlier beaten Wagga by 57 points to guarantee their place in the league's preseason grand final against Pool 1 winner Ainslie at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday. The match will be a curtain-raiser to the Sydney- Hawthorn clash.

Sydney was led by Mathews and Davis in their first game of yesterday's double-header against Wagga, but the Swans hit top gear in the second clash.

They broadsided Eastlake with a blinding display of running football as a sea of red jumpers flooded forward in waves of unstoppable attacks.

Goodes had ambled through the first game, switching between half-back and the forward 50 in search of the ball. But he vaulted into the second game, kicking two early goals on Marist youngster Tim Gray before coach Nathan Clarke switched onto the mobile utility.

He racked up three marks and 10 disposals in a clear reminder of his 2003 Brownlow-winning form before finishing on the pine midway through the second half.

Before yesterday's games Goodes had only played one practice match, against Collingwood last weekend. After the match, he said he was ready for the season's opening bounce.

"If I'm not playing in round 1 then I'd be disappointed. I'm quite sure that with the preparation I've had in Newcastle and now in Queanbeyan that I'm right," Goodes said.

"That was the first time I've played 100 minutes in a game this year, and that's really what I needed.

"In that second game I really set out to bust myself in the first half and see how good my fitness was, so it was good to get through and be productive with a couple of goals."

The senior players were given clearance by the AFL to play in yesterday's reserves game after injury stunted their season preparations.

Thanks for your thoughts. Vogels won't make round 1 but he is a handy backup as he is physically ready for afl

Not sure who you are referring to?

Blokes wearing 2, 20, 37 went ok!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You would hope so! They were Davis, Ablett and Goodes

4, 28 tireless workers!!!!!!!
Mathews and Crouch always work hard.

40, 29 - ordinary!!!!!!!!!!!
Malceski slowly coming back from a long term injury so he is excused. Powell though continues to confound me. I had high hopes for him when I saw him play in the reserves 2 years ago. Seems he has gone backwards.

41 - stick to basketball!!!!!!!!!!!!
Haven't seen any footag of Ericksen, so I can't comment.

33, 34, 36 did some ok things!!!!!
I like the look of Moore (#33)

46 (uninterested???), 49 - looked out of depth!!!!!!
Clarke (#46) played in the reserves last year so I don't think he would be unused to type of competition. #49 is a topup player.

7 - cant kick of the jam tin!!!!!!!!!!
Suprising to hear that, I think Willoughby has a beautiful long kick.

To clarify.

Vogues - definite afl standard/propsect/potential - should make it!!!!! Very impressed!!!!!

Mal - very ordinary kick (he asked for assistance from Jonas at the break and also asked the nutter for some advice on his kicking technique) - missed numerous sodas in front of goal - lacks in this area - on what ive seen from him last two weeks im fairly confident in suggesting no afl prospects!!!!

Reg Grundy - lacks intensity - no afl prospects!!!! Laughable performance in some instances!!!!!!!!!

Powell - ordinary - definte propsect for delistment at years end!!!!!!!!

Erik - taunted by eastlake to stick to basketball after his feeble attempt on goal - didnt show much!!!!!!!!

Josh - not afl standard/propsect or potential !!!!!!!!! has bit of toe but lacks any stand out qualities that will get him to the next level.

Clarke - seemed to lack the desire/intensity/interest? and fat as the side of a house!!!!!!!!!

Quade out of his depth!!!

Was suggested on swans website that fixter played - didnt see him at all - not sure if he was out there!!! Definitely didnt see anyone in the no. 9 floating around so not sure if he dooned another number?????

PS note - quite aware of the identies of 2, 20, 37 4, 28 !!!!! just simplier to type out that way from my notes!!!!!! ;)

You might be interested to note that Ericksen was named in the 'best' list for both games as listed on sydneyswans.com.au

And then again I might not be ;)

Personally im not looking at who was the best at ACTAFL level, im interested in who i see as having afl potenitial - the ability to take it to another level.

Erik was up against short people and so he dominates the ruck - but showed no signs of afl potential to me!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fair enough.

How did Saddington go?

Fine - looks ready to go - played mainly forward but much prefer him in the back half myself!!!!!!!

BTW Happy to field other questions - and interested in others views on these guys???

Its all good and well to go by the hype but you cant beat actually getting a close look at some of these guys to make in depth assesments!!!!!!!!!

It seems he wants to move forward permanently which I thought isn't too bad, he offers something a bit different from the other forwards, plus he was struggling down back.

Thanks again for your thoughts, much appreciated.

Understudys' '!' marks remind me of Seinfeld... 'He bought a coffee!!!'.

Does anyone know if Sunqvist played? Number 35 under, did you notice him?

Tim Schmidt got any chance of getting a game round 1???

No.

May get a go later in the year if injuries hit.

Surprised by your comments on Willoughby. I've seen a bit of him play and he's looked promising - and as previously mentioned his kicking is normally good. Maybe he just had a bad day.

Similarly on Grundy - he looked OK in early pre-season games so need to give him some time before making assessment.

Sundqvist rolled an ankle last weekend, hence his absence.

Clarke is an interesting one. If he is to make AFL level I suspect he's going to have to learn to work harder off the ball. I saw a bit of him last year as a reserves top up player and he does tend to look disinterested when the play is away from him.

I'm also surprised that Quade was playing as a top-up player, if it was him. I'm pretty sure that he was on Queanbeyan's list last year and you'd think he'd be more likely to stay put than to play as an irregular top up player for the Swans, especially as he must be 19 or 20 by now. If it was him, maybe he's still harbouring hopes of being picked up as a rookie by the Swans next year and thinks he has a better chance playing each week under the Swans coaching staff than for another team.

Seen Josh and Reg couple of times - dont think they have afl potential. 7's kicking lacks penetration and accuracy under pressure and he just dont have anything to get him a game and contribute at afl level - vanilla gidget/runt - 176 cms!!!!!!!!!!!!

Clarke is useless - wont make it!!!

Yes it was Quade, he is trying to get added as a rookie, was an article in the paper floating somewhere on him!!!!!
