AFL Club
Richmond
SYDNEY is quickly and quietly re-signing key players coming out of contract to consolidate the club's long-term future.

However, director of football Andrew Ireland also indicated the Swans would try to top up their playing list by trading for, or drafting, a couple of experienced key-position players.

In the past few weeks captain Stuart Maxfield has re-signed for another season while tough defender Ben Mathews and Jarrad McVeigh, the club's top-five pick from the 2002 draft, have agreed to two-year deals.

Ireland also revealed yesterday contract negotiations had started for star midfielder Jude Bolton and key defender Craig Bolton.

The club is hoping to lock up the Boltons for at least another two years.

Full-back Andrew Schauble, yet to play this season because of a hamstring injury, is also expected to re-sign. And the club has started preliminary talks with exciting rookie Paul Bevan.

"We know where our list is and we've started moving on the players we need to move on," Ireland said. "We'll move on the rest coming out of contract as the year pans out.

"A couple of years ago people thought we had an old list, but around 48 per cent are under 21 years old. So we probably don't want to get much younger."

Hey guys im a tiger fan and just wanna know what type of 'experienced' players you need like Half back flankers etc. Cause i think richmond will be pretty aggressive come trade week and i wanan know who also would be avaialble from the swans.

We are considering Nicks and Warfe to do the trading. But last year, no one was interested. But given that Nicksey's form continues like last game. I'm sure there would be more interest. I'd say warfe has to get delisted.

I don't think so, Nicks is 29, any club who trades for him would be really silly. Even a player the calibre of Carey who got traded around this age has provided questionable returns to the Crows.

We'd probably be interested in (depending on availability of course):

Ray Hall
Tivendale
Bowden
Gasper
Ottens

Naturally these guys are the cream at Richmond, and unlikely to be released. Ray Hall has already been courted and sounds willing to come, and Gasper is probably most likely to be offered up IMO unless his form has a monumental turn-around.

We'd offer draft picks and possibly Buchanan, Sundqvist, James, Powell or Meikljhon (cant spell). As you can see, its not as if we have a star list at the moment or need to make room for the cap ;)

Youve already had Gaspar as a young kid and he cost you a packet just so that he could show some glimpses of potential but overall it was expensive football tuition.

We are paying his even more expensive second phase of tuition.
Admittedly we are getting more back for it than you guys but if you want to take the whole remainder of his contract.

Please do!!!!

Personally I dont understand the animosity towards Gaspar. Everyone wet themselves over him for the last two years, and now he's a dud? I have less respect for Fletcher (and now he's all sooky about how long he's "had to" play at FB) and I think Darren just needs a new club. Nothing personal, just feels stale. Give him to us at a reasonable cost and I'm certain Roos would love him. Just dont get upset if he does a good job on Richo next year ;)

Wouldn't touch Bowden with a barge pole!

I always think Tivendale has some class that could blossom under a good coach.

Ray Hall could be useful in time and with the right guidance too.

Same with Ottens actually!

I bet the money he gets doesnt feel stale. if he was going to feel stale halfway into a contract it would have been nice to have let the club know that the staleness would kick in.

You can have him this week actually as long as you use him to help you beat Collingwood. In fact if you are seriously wanting help in beating Collingwood you can have any of our players.
