I agree. But so is Hayward. And, for all his imperfections, there are fewer Haywards in the league than there are Florents.
Still an average player though. I'd hope the club is focused on securing the other three best 22 players out of contract this year (not free agents I know) rather than allowing the potential interest in Hayward to force us into overpaying him just to keep him.

I hope we get Zurhaar to replace him

We must be a real threat this year given the surge in salary cap and players being chased by other clubs stories….good signs.

I think the story is a bit of a beat up. The cap’s going to be increasing by $2M next year, so surely $200k isn’t going to break the bank for one year alone.
200k is 1.3% of our existing cap. It's be poor work if this is all it took to screw us over

I hope we Get Zurhaar to add to our arsenal, not to replace Hayward or anyone else in particular. He is different to anyone we have.
im not opposed to keeping Hayward, but im not worried if we lose him, especially if we gain Zurhaar.

I dont want Zurhaar.. Would rather see Corey get a game, or Konstanty, or Sheldrick, or any of our draftees.. (for the same reason of getting draftees games, I wasn't ecstatic when we traded for Adams and Jordon - can see the need though)

Also, Im liking the AFL community under-estimating Florent. He never misses games, very reliable. Hes very quick, very good in traffic, good in the contest and is a very good kick (note well.. the 1st goal of season 2024!)
Having Florent and Blakey attacking off half back and through the centre of the ground is gonna cause truckloads of head aches for the opposition. Combined with a composed Roberts (19 disposals, 16 kicks at 95%) taking over from Lloyd, and thats a bloody good and very well balanced half back line
Speed, Agility, Never injured and a good kick. Florent stays

LOL - Fox Sports on the ball again...NOT

It was a curious call leaving out Angus Sheldrick last week given the Swans’ midfield is so undermanned. While Sheldrick could come in as the sub, Sam Wicks provided a sparkplug in attack upon coming in including kicking a goal, and seems more suited to the role.

Short story - we're (allegedly) paying Grundy $900k this year, not the $700k we first thought we would be (not including the Collingwood money).

Hence why we didn't give up much in draft picks when we found out.

The whole article reads like a journalist being leaked information by Collingwood in the week their supporters are going to see their star ruckman playing for another team.

Landsberger should credit the Collingwood media person who wrote the below 3 lines for him.

'The Swans also traded in ex-Magpie Taylor Adams, who will earn roughly $600,000 this year.

The Magpies were cleverly able to use that freed-up cash space to target Fremantle goalkicker Lachie Schultz.

It was a smart list-management move, given Adams might have acted as a roadblock to young midfielder Finlay Macrae, who looks like he will be ready to pop this season.'

They were very careful with their wording on the Fox show last night. It was said that that we are paying more "this year" which may be part of a salary cap balancing act. If we had lots of cash to offer $1m to players, but was unsuccessful (Norton, etc) then we may have elected to use some of the space to front-end Grundy's contract so that we have more next year. It also prevents us from falling under the salary floor as well.

If we're paying Grundy $1.2m this season, I imagine it's because we want to. Clubs can, within reason, move total contract amounts between years. The Swans would have been well aware, long before they negotiated a trade, how much Grundy's contract entitled him to over its entire length and how much Collingwood would be contributing. The initial schedule of payments would likely have been set by Collingwood when they entered into the contract with Grundy, but I imagine that could have been renegotiated with Grundy and his manager had the club needed to, particularly given how keen Grundy was to come here once he'd met with the club.

We went after a biggish name this year - Barrass, McKay - and didn't land one. We've possibly got a little still spare that we had expected (wanted) to pay Dawson before he decided to move elsewhere. We know Errol will require a significant pay increase when he re-signs, have a few others to sign up to new contracts (including fighting off Freo for McDonald) and have been putting out feelers for other headliners. So I daresay it made sense for the club to absorb a large chunk of the Grundy contract this year. It might mean we are close to the maximum cap for 2024 but doesn't mean our cap is bursting for 2025, 6, 7 etc.
Just noticed you already said this, Liz. You must be a very astute operator :)

At 12:50 begins an outstanding preview of the Collingwood game on Friday night by Nathan Buckley. Hopefully they get given an opponent by the AFL's fixturing department before then or they won't be able to put any of the things Bucks talked about into practice.

Am I mistaken in that they didn't actually even say 'Sydney' or 'Swans', mention any of our players or coaches at all during that "preview". I've heard some biased previews in my time but I'm not sure I've seen one where one of the teams was completely invisible.
