Fox Footy going on about the Xerri hit and Tribunal hearing. Last night in "On the Couch" clearly saying that the fact that "it's an automatic 3 week suspension" because the player was knocked out.

No mention of the McCartin hit which knocked him out and nearly broke his cheek bone and maybe ended his career not even getting a mention from the MRO. No credibility!

The AFL , MRO and the Tribunal are a joke.

That's the risk of running back with the flight towards a forward on the lead. I dont understand the outrage.

Ben Mathews on RSN with Harf this morning:

I was watching a fair bit of NEAFL at the time and agree about Cameron and Nankervis. We have always favoured tap ruckmen.
We only got rid of Cameron because he was always injured , we liked him , but couldn't persist with a bloke that couldn't get on the park

I love revisiting 2016. Its a decade ago and still provokes frustration. I could find my posts from around then as well. I wasnt particularly frustrated with losing tom Mithcell as i felt he was the most replaceable of the mids we had. unfortunately as with a lot of things about then hanners basically broke down after 2016 and keiran jack was starting to slow down. but i would have played parker, hanners, jack and jpk before mitchell every time.

I do remember being frustrated with losing nank. the way the hawks bullied us in 2014 without mummy to land on top of lewis suggested we needed a big lad not afraid to throw his weight around. nank was it and naismith wasnt. Once we got buddy it sort of pushed tippett to playing largely ruck and sometimes forward. nank was a better forward than naismith and he was the bully we needed. naismith the better tap ruck.

all ancient history now.
And would've rag dolled Tom Boyd

Someone will have a crack at me about wrong thread
But if we play Nank in 16 even with the cheats we win the flag , it was a dumb decision to keep Sam who wouldn't get a mark in an exam
The mistake we made with Naismith was backing his body to hold up. His best was very good and suited our midfiield. His prelim in 2016 v Cats was excellent.

Found an interview with Leon Cameron from before the game last Sunday on MMM (should play from start of interview)

Worth a listen, very forthright on our current position and the year so far, and a brief but good chat about our list (at 40m40s mark); very bullish on Joel's future

Garlick was good on SEN this morning.

Northern Academies are important for developing the game.

NGA rules need to be tightened up to stop it just being a rort.

F/Son is an unfair lucky dip that should just be abolished.
With the NGA it seems to me that the missing link in the "traditional" states is around the non-private school pathways more so than indigenous or even non-anglo. Needs a total rethink but running state or zone based academies to address this seems reasonable to me.

Far too logical for the AFL.

The fundamental issue is that it was brought in as a rort to placate the non NSW/QLD teams.

If it was intended to be a way to identify talent from other sports, it would have been set up that way.

They could have just fixed the bidding system, so you couldn't get players like Darcy or Daicos or Heeney for f all, but the AFL instead chose to make the problem much worse.

Yes, it was clearly set up as a rort but there is an opportunity to rejig it to something much more meaningful while abolishing FS.
Just as a for instance (totally arguable of course) combine Swans and Giants Academies, GC and Lions into NSW and QLD Academies, funded by the AFL. Provide scholarships for indigenous and non-anglo kids. Similar for SA and WA. That's four academies outside Victoria. Establish two in Vic - one metro and one country. Same structure. National oversight body. Like our academies, make and female. The private schools stay as is. At the top level it can be like CHS and CAS in NSW.
