This interview with Ben Matthews is worth a watch - his commentary around our young players is quite insightful (for example, his words re: Buller aren’t those you’d expect to hear if he was going to be delisted).

Equally telling perhaps is those who don’t get a mention.

There can never be enough Gus.
Pretty emphatic.. Sounds like player morale is strong and the club is a good place to be . Hopefully they can set up well for next year.. Less injured players going into the off season. Sounds like a great young bloke......cause he wants to stay 😄

Article from Cornes saying Swans are getting a reputation for being
Fake tough guys ..
Unfortunately it looks that way ..
As others have been saying for a while, ...need to put the niggle away until we get a flag behind us..
Not to rant, but this is basically the reason this current Swans team is my least favourite that I've seen in my lifetime (born in '95) by a long way. As Swans representing a club that's been graced by Skilton, Bedford, Round, Kelly, Goodes, Kennedy, etc. I love everyone in this current squad and will always root for their success. As individual players, I don't like a lot of them.

The misconception is that Swans fans who complain about the tough guy antics just don't like tough guy antics. That's just not true. We watched and celebrated Buddy Franklin for a decade, and a bloke literally nicknamed Big Bad Bustling Barry Hall was once our captain. These guys were hardly modest, mild-mannered mouses on the field. But they backed it up with how they played and the effort they gave almost every single week.

What I can't stand for are a bunch of blokes who have no problems showing their aggression when it comes to shirt-fronting, lip service, goal celebrations or an off-the-ball melee, but can't channel that aggression into putting their heads over the ball, desperately lunging to chase or stick tackles, or gut-running defensively. Funny how when it comes to that stuff, a lot of the "passion" and "mongrel" our players have seems to just mysteriously vanish...

There are a few exceptions obviously. Guys like Rowy, Grundy & Harry can hold their heads high with the efforts they give every single week. But the irony is that these are the guys who act like they should be at Woodstock with flowers in their hair.

I think you’re romanticising Buddy a bit.

Supremely talented champion of the game & a treat to watch - but he didn’t exactly stand up in the big games for us.

I did say "almost every week"

Yes we'd have liked more impact in grand finals from Buddy but you don't kick over 1000 goals unless you're doing your job remarkably consistently.

Perfectly said Caesar, don't think I've ever agreed with a post on here more.

Well said caesar. Exactly why I've been so hard on the team & club these last 8 years or so.
They don't represent what made me proud of the club under Roos, win, lose or draw.

Do the tough stuff with the ball & against the big top teams idiots.
The two that bother me the most.
Paps & McInerney.
MISSING.
MISSING when we need a momentum change so that we don't get 12 unanswered goals against us.

I think the current team have plenty of players that do the hard and tough things. I just think the niggleing and fancy celebrations are if it gives you a mental edge.
I think it is almost red rag to a bull sort of stuff...almost backfiring for us to its intended purpose .
The grand finals have been horrendous but you don't get to them if you can't do the hard stuff.
Definitely a few individuals that are questionable in some of the hard areas but even those ones arent totally soft.
Watching the crows tackle,... as many have said we lack.
Fine line between dour and effort teams with lower talent and all finesse and lacking in contest and accountability .
We have been on both ends of the spectrum but haven't got the perfect balance.
Probably easier barracking for honest dour than the other ..

It was bullshit at the beginning of the year and it's bullshit now. The notion that we need to play like polite choirboys because we've had the nerve to make 2 grand finals in 3 years but not win them is absolute crap.

If we had won either of them it would all be ok would it? How about if we'd had honourable losses in the prelims instead, would there be this much scrutiny on a couple of players playing a physical game and returning serve?

It's revisionist nonsense.
