Daniel Merrett misses match on Barry Hall
IN Matthew O'Dwyer, out Barry Hall. Daniel Merrett is the only person associated with the Brisbane Lions who isn't thrilled to hear Hall won't play.
The rampaging Sydney superstar has pulled out of today's clash in Canberra and been replaced by a rookie-listed midfielder.
Merrett has recovered from knee surgery and will take his place against the Swans. He said Hall would have given him the perfect tune-up before round 1 against West Coast.
Instead he is likely to cross paths with giant former Southport player Jesse White, who has reportedly taken big steps in the past 12 months – playing mainly as a centre half forward.
Merrett felt discomfort in his knee in late January and was diagnosed with a slight tear in the lateral meniscus.
Although not a serious injury it can be painful and the decision was made to forego the pre-season tournament to have the problem fixed.
A slightly quicker than expected recovery has given him the chance for one hitout before the season starts against West Coast at Easter.
"I thought I could have played last weekend but I needed a bit more fitness from training," Merrett said.
"I'm going to be blowing hard so I have got that to look forward too, but I feel like I should be able to play most of the game."
Merrett really only became a regular last season when he was asked to fill the big shoes left by the departure to Essendon of Mal Michael.
Before that he had managed just 25 games since joining the club in the 2002 national draft.
Last season he played all 22 and finished eighth in the club's best and fairest.
Although Merrett doesn't share the profile of superstars Jonathan Brown and Simon Black, and other topliners Jamie Charman, Luke Power and Nigel Lappin, you can bet his name would be one of the first pencilled in on the team sheet.
So important is he to Brisbane it is doubtful he is even discussed at selection meetings.
"I'm pretty lucky to find myself in the position I am in," was his modest way of describing his rise up the LIons' pecking order.
"I don't really know how to take that. It is just nice to know I react well when I'm needed in the team. It is a good feeling."

From the Lions board;
just got back from the match, a good one too. OK first for the Lions fans, Bradshaw didn't play any of the first half, but came on in the second and took some awesome grabs (4-5). He looks back to the old Bradshaw. Rischitelli got a fair bit of it and your aboriginal guys were the matchwinners in the last term along with Bradshaw's contests. Nigel Lappin had some real classy touches and took the mark of the match on the wing in a pack. Matty Leuenberger contested the ruck very nicely, as did Jamie Charman who also kicked 3 goals.
Now for the Swanny fans. Lewis Roberts Thompson played in the ruck for most of the game and picked up lots of the ball. I kept a keen eye on Craig Bird and counted 20 disposals for him. Micky O got many marks. I saw a lot of Ryan O'Keefe, Kirk, Barlow. Tadg Kennelly barely got any ball but with the few touches he did get he used the pill very nicely. Luke Brennan did some very nice things and so did Heath Grundy.

not sure what to make of the report in terms of the overall game
from what i'd heard, we did pretty well against a near full-strength lions side, and certainly very encouarging reports on jack, barlow and bird, and sounds like grundy's done well too
can't udnerstand the reluctance to play white
but i'm happy to hear LRT seems to be moving well
going on the report, bevan, mcveigh and mathews did poorly, and i would like to think if the 26 (including hall) that made up the squad is also what roos will pick his round 1 team from, that trio might actually miss out
i suspect brennan will miss, and i'd like to see moore picked, three goals would surely help

as i said, i think brennan will be cut
but surely at least one of white or grundy HAS to play
i think mathews might be on the outer, he's hardly been outstanding in preseason, and doesn't seem to have done much yesterday
yes, i know it would take a huge change of heart for roos to drop all three, but jack seems to have played his way in, bird MUST play
and moore's three goals and a generally good preseason might get him over the line too

Do you reckon Richards is a walk in start for Rnd 1? He hasnt played a pre season game has he? Grundy or brennan should be considerd. To bring 3 smalls is not the go imo.
Of the fringe dwellers i reckon Grundy, Moore, Jack (over Bird for match ups prob on Milne) and either Brennan (or Richards depending how fit he is) should get the gig..
Pity about White, going from the report he was never really going to be seriously considerd for rnd 1. Hope we get to see he get a few games this year..
